Evolution of the turbulence structure in the surf and swash zones

The velocity field and turbulence structure within the surf and swash zones forced by a laboratory-generated plunging breaking wave were investigated using a particle image velocimetry measurement technique. Two-dimensional velocity fields in the vertical plane from 200 consecutive monochromatic waves were measured at four cross-shore locations, shoreward of the breaker line. The phase-averaged mean flow fields indicate that a shear layer occurs when the uprush of the bore front interacts with the downwash flow. The turbulence characteristics were examined via spectral analysis. The larger-scale turbulence structure is closely associated with the breaking-wave- and the bore-generated turbulence in the surf zone; then, the large-scale turbulence energy cascades to smaller scales, as the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) evolves from the outer surf zone to the swash zone. Smaller-scale energy injection during the latter stage of the downwash phase is associated with the bed-generated turbulence, yielding a −1 slope in the upper inertial range in the spatial spectra. Depth-integrated TKE budget components indicate that a local TKE equilibrium exists during the bore-front phases and the latter stage of the downwash phases in the outer surf zone. The TKE decay resembles the decay of grid turbulence during the latter stage of the uprush and the early stage of the downwash, as the production rate is small because of the absence of strong mean shear during this stage of the wave cycle as well as the relatively short time available for the growth of the bed boundary layer.

<div>Simulation results from a global <span>magnetohydrodynamic</span> model of the solar corona and the solar wind are compared with Parker Solar <span>Probe's</span> (<span>PSP</span>) observations during its first several orbits. The fully three-dimensional model (<span>Usmanov</span> <span>et</span> <span>al</span>., 2018, <span>ApJ</span>, 865, 25) is based on Reynolds-averaged mean-flow equations coupled with turbulence transport equations. The model accounts for effects of electron heat conduction, Coulomb collisions, Reynolds stresses, and heating of protons and electrons via nonlinear turbulent cascade. Turbulence transport equations for turbulence energy, cross <span>helicity</span>, and correlation length are solved concurrently with the mean-flow equations. We specify boundary conditions at the coronal base using solar synoptic <span>magnetograms</span> and calculate plasma, magnetic field, and turbulence parameters along the <span>PSP</span> trajectory. We also accumulate data from all orbits considered, to obtain the trends observed as a function of heliocentric distance. Comparison of simulation results with <span>PSP</span> data show general agreement. Finally, we generate synthetic fluctuations constrained by the local rms turbulence amplitude given by the model, and compare properties of this synthetic turbulence with PSP observations.</div>

The chapter begins with a phenomenological treatment of the observed atmospheric circulation. It then goes on to discuss how the barotropic model arises as a so-calledbalanced model of the slow, vorticity-driven dynamics, from the more general shallowwater model which also admits inertia-gravity waves. This is important because large-scale atmospheric turbulence exhibits aspects of both balanced and unbalanced dynamics. Because of the first-order importance of zonal flows in the atmospheric general circulation, the large-scale turbulence is highly inhomogeneous, and is shaped by the nature of the interaction between zonal flows and Rossby waves described eloquently by Michael McIntyre as a wave-turbulence jigsaw puzzle. This motivates a review of the barotropic theory of wave, mean-flow interaction, which is underpinned by the Hamiltonian structure of geophysical fluid dynamics.

An experimental research program was undertaken to examine the influence of large-scale high-intensity turbulence on vane heat transfer. The experiment was conducted in a four-vane linear cascade at exit Reynolds numbers of 500,000 and 800,000 based on chord length. Heat transfer measurements were made for four inlet turbulence conditions including a low turbulence case (Tu ≅ 1 percent), a grid turbulence case (Tu ≅ 7.5 percent), and two levels of large-scale turbulence generated with a mock combustor at two upstream locations (Tu ≅ 12 percent and 8 percent). The heat transfer data demonstrated that the length scale, Lu, has a significant effect on stagnation region and pressure surface heat transfer.

The paper deals with the problem of estimating the sound field generated by a limited region of turbulence in an infinitely long, straight, hard-walled pipe. The field is analysed in a co-ordinate system moving with the assumed uniform mean flow, and the possibility of eddy convection relative to that reference system is considered. Large-scale turbulence is shown to induce plane acoustic waves of intensity proportional to the sixth power of flow velocity. The same is true of small-scale turbulence of low characteristic frequency. In both cases convective effects increase the acoustic output and distribute the bulk of the energy in a mode propagating upstream against the mean flow. Small-scale turbulence of higher frequency excites more modes, the sound increasing with very nearly the eighth power of velocity (U7.7) as soon as the second mode is excited. In the limit, when more than about 20 modes are excited, the energy output is unaffected by the constraint of the pipe walls, increasing with the eighth power of velocity, and being substantially amplified by convective motion.

Abstract Jets coexist with planetary-scale waves in the turbulence of planetary atmospheres. The coherent component of these structures arises from cooperative interaction between the coherent structures and the incoherent small-scale turbulence in which they are embedded. It follows that theoretical understanding of the dynamics of jets and planetary-scale waves requires adopting the perspective of statistical state dynamics (SSD), which comprises the dynamics of the interaction between coherent and incoherent components in the turbulent state. In this work, the stochastic structural stability theory (S3T) implementation of SSD for barotropic beta-plane turbulence is used to develop a theory for the jet–wave coexistence regime by separating the coherent motions consisting of the zonal jets together with a selection of large-scale waves from the smaller-scale motions that constitute the incoherent component. It is found that mean flow–turbulence interaction gives rise to jets that coexist with large-scale coherent waves in a synergistic manner. Large-scale waves that would exist only as damped modes in the laminar jet are found to be transformed into exponentially growing waves by interaction with the incoherent small-scale turbulence, which results in a change in the mode structure, allowing the mode to tap the energy of the mean jet. This mechanism of destabilization differs fundamentally and serves to augment the more familiar S3T instabilities in which jets and waves arise from homogeneous turbulence with the energy source exclusively from the incoherent eddy field and provides further insight into the cooperative dynamics of the jet–wave coexistence regime in planetary turbulence.

Experiments have been carried out to investigate the effect of rotation of the whole system on decaying turbulence, generally similar to grid turbulence, generated in air in an annular container on a rotating table. Measurements to determine the structure of the turbulence were made during its decay, mean quantities being determined by a mixture of time and ensemble averaging. Quantities measured (as functions of time after the turbulence generation) were turbulence intensities perpendicular to and parallel to the rotation axis, spectra of these two components with respect to a wavenumber perpendicular to the rotation axis, and some correlation coefficients, selected to detect differences in length scales perpendicular and parallel to the rotation axis. The intensity measurements were made for a wide range of rotation rates; the other measurements were made at a single rotation rate (selected to give a Rossby number varying during the decay from about 1 to small values) and, for comparison, at zero rotation. Subsidiary experiments were carried out to measure the spin-up time of the system, and to determine whether the turbulence produced any mean flow relative to the container.A principal result is that increasing the rotation rate produces faster decay of the turbulence; the nature of the additional energy sink is an important part of the interpretation. Other features of the results are as follows: the measurements with-outrotation can be satisfactorily related to wind-tunnel measurements; even with rotation, the ratio of the intensities in the two directions remains substantially constant; the normalized spectra for the rotating and the non-rotating cases show surprising similarity but do contain slight systematic differences, consistent with the length scales indicated by the correlations; rotation produces a large increase in the length scale parallel to the rotation axis and a smaller increase in that perpendicular to it; the turbulence produces no measurable mean flow.A model for the interpretation of the results is developed in terms of the action of inertial waves in carrying energy to the boundaries of the enclosure, where it is dissipated in viscous boundary layers. The model provides satisfactory explanations of the overall decay of the turbulence and of the decay of individual spectral components. Transfer of energy between wavenumbers plays a much less significant role in the dynamics of decay than in a non-rotating fluid. The relationship of the model to the interpretation of the length-scale difference in terms of the Taylor-Proudman theorem is discussed.The model implies that the overall dimensions of the system enter in an important way into the dynamics. This imposes a serious limitation on the application of the results to the geophysical situations at which experiments of this type are aimed.The paper includes some discussion of the possibility of energy transfer from the turbulence to a mean motion (the ‘vorticity expulsion’ hypothesis). It is possible, on the basis of the observations, to exclude this process as the additional turbulence energy sink. But this does not provide any evidence either for or against the hypothesis in the conditions for which it has been postulated.
