AbstractRamalina europaeaGasparyan, Sipman & Lücking andR. labiosorediataGasparyan, Sipman & Lücking, two species of theR. pollinariagroup, are described here as new to science.Ramalina europaea, widely distributed in Europe, can be distinguished by small, punctiform, often terminal soralia starting out on small, spine-like branchlets, whereasR. labiosorediatafrom North America differs fromR. pollinarias. str. andR. europaeain the almost exclusively terminal soralia formed on the tips of normal lobes, originating from the underside and becoming irregularly labriform. Morphological characters, chemistry, ecology and geographical distribution are discussed and a key to the species of theRamalina pollinariagroup is provided. The topology of a maximum likelihood tree based on ITS shows the presence of three well-supported clades, corresponding to the morphological differences of the three species. The status of several historical names variously placed in synonymy with or described as infraspecific entities ofR. pollinariais reassessed and a new neotype and an epitype are designated forLichen pollinarius, a neotype forL. squarrosus, making it a synonym ofR. farinacea, and lectotypes forR. pollinariavar.elatior, making it a synonym ofR. pollinarias. str., and for var.humilis, a taxon of yet unknown affinity.

The subgenus Brygoomantis in the Madagascar-endemic genus Mantidactylus contains 12 nominal species but is in urgent need of taxonomic revision as many additional, genetically divergent but undescribed candidate species have been identified. We here take a first step towards a better resolution of this group by describing a new species, Mantidactylus schulzi sp. nov., occurring at the Tsaratanana and Manongarivo Massifs, differentiated in genetic, bioacoustic and sometimes morphological characters from its closest relatives. We show that upon detailed study, most species in Brygoomantis can be delimited by concordant differentiation of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, and by bioacoustic and morphological differences. We flag this group of morphologically similar frogs as a test case where molecular data on historical type specimens by ancient DNA methods might be needed to reach a satisfying clarification of taxonomy and nomenclature. However, the status of the new species M. schulzi is not in doubt as it is morphologically distinct from most historical type specimens, and microendemic to a region in northern Madagascar from where no earlier names exist.

The present study tries to focus on describing two new species belonging to genus Gammarus from western Iran along the Zagros Mountains range. The most remarkable feature of Gammarus hegmatanensis sp. n. is the shape of epimeral plate 3, which is sharply pointed posteriorly with a distinct lobate anterior margin. This species has some similarities with and differences from some other species of Gammarus pulex–group such as G. parthicus and G. syriacus. The other species, G. sirvannus sp. n. with elongated eyes is similar to G. duebeni, G. lobifer, G. balutchi and G. loeffleri, but it shows prominent morphological differences and a distinct geographical distribution from these species. These new findings shed more light on the information available on amphipod fauna of Iran.

During field studies of the inselbergs of northeastern Brazil, two potentially new species of were discovered. They share morphological characters with several genera of Linderniaceae (Lamiales) such as Ameroglossum, Cubitanthus and Stemodiopsis, but the morphological differences are such that they do not make a good fit with any of the known genera in Linderniaceae. They are most likely related to Ameroglossum, and like most members of this genus the plants have a conserved chromosome number of 2n = 60. Their exclusive occurrence on inselbergs in northeastern Brazil also hint at this relationship, but because their morphology differs greatly from Ameroglossum and each other, the two new species are described in separate genera. Catimbaua is a pendent plant somewhat similar to Cubitanthus, but with different stem morphology and indumentum. Isabelcristinia grows in habitats similar to, but drier than, Ameroglossum and is vegetatively similar. However, it is covered in glandular hairs and has open-throated white flowers rather than the red or orange tubular flowers found in Ameroglossum. Catimbaua pendula and Isabelcristinia aromatica are rare, and both are likely to fall in a category of threat.

Abstract After being stable for nearly a century, the taxonomic history of the genus Xiphopenaeus has been marked by many changes in the last three decades. The taxonomic status of the Atlantic species has a low resolution, and many species are still undefined and grouped as cryptic species. Here we employed an integrative approach to define the species of Xiphopenaeus and the morphological characters needed to differentiate them. We combined the analyses of two molecular markers (COI and 16 S rDNA), scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Based on specimens from 17 localities from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, we detected five divergent genetic groups, three in the Atlantic (A1, A2, A3) and two in the Pacific (P1, P2). Male secondary sexual characters were able to differentiate four out of the five genetic groups. Group A1 corresponds to X. kroyeri, and A2 and A3 correspond to new species. We redescribed the genus and two new species are described and illustrated: Xiphopenaeus dincao nov. sp. (A2) and Xiphopenaeus baueri nov. sp. (A3). Since the holotype of X. riveti was missing and the specimen analysed from group P2 was a female, the status of the species of Xiphopenaeus from the Pacific remains unresolved.

The subfamily Parornichinae and thus the genus Parornix Spuler, 1910 are reported for the first time in China. Two new species, P. sinensis Liu, sp. n. feeding on Amygdalus davidiana and P. yuliella Liu & Teng, sp. n. on Cerasus japonica, are described herein. Both host plant species belong to Rosaceae. Adult, genitalia of both sexes, and leaf mines are described and illustrated for both species. A Maximum Likelihood tree based on DNA barcodes available for Parornix is also provided for species separation. Reference barcodes for both new species are generated.

Two new species of Amaurobius from China, A. songi sp. nov. and A. spinatus sp. nov. are described on morphological characters of males and females. They are generally very similar to all known Amaurobius species from India, Europe and North America but differ in some details of the copulatory organs. The two species represent the first record of Amaurobius in China.

The focus of this study is on Preussia sensu lato species with 8-celled ascospores. Two new species, P. alpina and P. octocylindrospora are introduced based on morphological characters and discussed in relation to similar species in the genus. New records are provided from Sporormiella corynespora, S. octomegaspora, P. octomera and P. octonalis. This greatly expands or reduces their geographical distribution ranges, as well as substrate preferences. In addition, a key to the coprophilous species with 8-celled ascospores is provided.

Prostomatean ciliates play important roles in the flow of material and energy in aquatic microbial food webs, and thus have attracted wide attention for over a century. Their taxonomy and systematics are, however, still poorly understood because of their relatively few taxonomically informative morphological characters. In this study, two new prostomateans, Lagynus binucleatus sp. n. and Foissnerophrys alveolata gen. n., sp. n., collected from a freshwater pool and the intertidal zone of a sandy beach, respectively, in Qingdao, China, are investigated using living observation, protargol staining, and SSU rRNA gene sequencing methods. The genus Lagynus is redefined, and the new species L. binucleatus sp. n. is established based on significant morphological differences with similar forms. Furthermore, a new genus, Foissnerophrys gen. n., is established based on a combination of morphological and molecular data with F. alveaolata sp. n. the type species by monotypy. The identities of intracellular prokaryotes of these two new species are discussed based on fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) data and newly obtained 16S rRNA gene sequences.

AbstractTwo new species of the genus Lygus Hahn are described: potentillae from Canada, Alaska, and Colorado; and mexicanus from Mexico and Texas. Lygus abroniae Van Duzee is considered to be a typical member of the genus Lygus. The seasonal colour variations of the three species are noted, their relationships to other species in the genus are discussed, and their host plants are given.

Four species of Mycena possessing a colored lamellar are reported. Of these, Mycena entolomoides is described as new and is distinguished by an incarnate color of the whole lamellae, and M. citrinomarginata, M. purpureofusca, and M. strobilinoidea are recorded for the first time in China. A complete description, drawings and photographs of the morphological characters of M. entolomoides sp. nov. are accompanied by comparisons with closely related taxa. The three species newly recorded in China are considered in agreement with those species in Europe and North America. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences showed that M. entolomoides sp. nov. forms a monophyletic clade, well supported by maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference.
