Population dynamics and reproductive aspects of the decorator crab Microphrys bicornutus (Crustacea: Brachyura: Majidae) in an extreme shallow Thalassia complex

The decorator crab, Microphrys bicornutus, is a common inhabitant of the turtle grass Thalassia testudinum. In order to establish the behaviour of a population of this species in an extreme shallow Thalassia complex (maximum depth less than 50 cm, and often exposed to the air), size distribution, population dynamics, reproductive effort and egg size were studied in Buchuaco—Venezuela. Monthly sampling was undertaken between June 1988 and December 1990. A total of 1403 specimens of M. bicornutus were captured. In each of the sampled years, size distribution was strongly skewed to the predominance of small size crabs. Females were significantly larger than males in all the three years. Small size and large size crabs showed periodic annual fluctuations in abundance, with peaks during the last months of the year for the first, and peaks between April and June for the latter. Medium size crabs showed no periodicity at all. Number of eggs per female ranged between 40 and 4305 (mean = 1067.4), and was positively correlated with female body size. Eggs increased their size gradually during their development, and differences in egg size between development stages were significant. The biological parameters found in this study are compared with other populations of this crab, found in Venezuela and Brazil, in different ecosystems. Results acquired in this work add new insights to the behaviour of this decorator crab, specifically on density variation and egg size (among others), living in an environment that is constantly exposed to air and to other physicochemical variations.

Abstract AISI Type S2 is a water-hardening tool steel with extreme toughness and resistance to shock loading. Even at a hardness of Rockwell C 59-60, it will bend before it breaks. The purpose of this study was to quantify the exercise intensity and technical involvement of U9 boys’ and girls’ team handball during different game formats, and the differences between genders. Locomotor activity (total distance, distance in speed zones, accelerations, and decelerations), heart rate (HR), and technical involvement (shots, goals, and duels) metrics were collected during various 15 min game formats from a total of 57 Danish U9 players (37 boys and 20 girls). Game formats were a small size pitch (20 × 13 m) with 3 vs 3 players and offensive goalkeepers (S3 + 1) and 4 vs 4 players (S4), a medium size pitch (25.8 × 20 m) with 4 vs 4 (M4) and 5 vs 5 (M5) players, and a large size pitch (40 × 20 m) with 5 vs 5 (L5) players. Boys and girls covered a higher total distance (TD) of high-speed running (HSR) and sprinting during L5 games compared to all other game formats (p < 0.05; ES = (−0.9 to −2.1), (−1.4 to −2.8), and (−0.9 to −1.3) respectively). Players covered the highest amount of sprinting distance in L5 games compared to all other game formats (p < 0.01; ES = 0.8 to 1.4). In all the game formats, players spent from 3.04 to 5.96 min in 180–200 bpm and 0.03 min to 0.85 min in >200 bpm of the total 15 min. In addition, both genders had more shots in S3 + 1 than M5 (p < 0.01; ES = 1.0 (0.4;1.7)) and L5 (p < 0.01; ES = 1.1 (0.6;2.2)). Team handball matches have high heart rates, total distances covered, and high-intensity running distances for U9 boys and girls irrespective of the game format. Locomotor demands appeared to be even higher when playing on larger pitches, whereas the smaller pitch size and fewer players led to elevated technical involvement.

The influence of the lateral size and the content of graphene oxide (GO) flakes in specific oxygenate functional groups on the anti-biofouling properties and performance of thin-film composite membrane (TFC) was studied. Three different multidimensional GO samples were prepared with small (500–1200 nm), medium (1200–2300 nm), and large (2300–3600 nm) size distribution, and with different degrees of oxidation (GO3 > GO2 > GO1), varying the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide amount during GO synthesis. GO1 sheets’ length have a heterogeneous size distribution containing all size groups, whilst GO2 is contained in a medium-size group, and GO3 is totally contained within a small-size group. Moreover, GO oxygenate groups were controlled. GO2 and GO3 have hydroxyl and epoxy groups at the basal plane of their sheets. Meanwhile, GO1 presented only hydroxyl groups. GO sheets were incorporated into the polyamide (PA) layer of the TFC membrane during the interfacial polymerization reaction. The incorporation of GO1 produced a modified membrane with excellent bactericidal properties and anti-adhesion capacity, as well as superior desalination performance with high water flow (133% as compared with the unmodified membrane). For GO2 and GO3, despite the significant anti-biofouling effect, a detrimental impact on desalination performance was observed. The high content of large sheets in GO2 and small sheet stacking in GO3 produced an unfavorable impact on the water flow. Therefore, the synergistic effect due to the presence of large- and small-sized GO sheets and high content of OH-functional groups (GO1) made it possible to balance the performance of the membrane.

We studied populations of three tundra-dwelling wolf spider (Lycosidae) species to determine reproductive trait relationships and developmental timing in the Arctic. We collected 451 Pardosa lapponica (Thorell, 1872), 176 Pardosa sodalis Holm, 1970, and 117 Pardosa moesta Banks, 1892 during summer 2008. We used log-likelihood ratio tests and multiple linear regressions to determine the best predictors of fecundity and relative reproductive effort. Female body size best explained the variation in fecundity and body condition was the best predictor for relative reproductive effort. We tested for a trade-off between the allocation of resources to individual eggs and the number of eggs produced (fecundity) within each species using linear regression. There was variation in detectable egg size and number trade-offs among sites and these may be related to local variation in resource allocation linked to density-related biotic or abiotic factors. These findings contribute to knowledge about the fitness of arctic wolf spiders in the region of study and are particularly relevant in light of the effects that climate changes are predicted to have on the arctic fauna.

<p><em>The study </em><em>of population biology </em><em>of mud crab <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Scylla</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">serrata</span> is necessary to </em><em>analyse </em><em>the population dynamics, </em><em>such as </em><em>growth of crabs, size distribution, mortality </em><em>and exploitation </em><em>rate</em><em>s</em><em> </em>of<em> </em><em>S. </em><em>s</em><em>errata. </em><em>Population biology </em><em>data collection </em><em>was </em><em>carried out</em><em> from March to June 2016 at</em><em> estuary and </em><em>s</em><em>ilvofishery area</em><em>s of three stations (</em>Mayangan, Tanjung Tiga and Blanakan villages)<em>.</em><em> </em><em>Data  were analyzed </em><em>using </em><em>analytical methods </em><em>of</em><em> FISAT-II (FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Toool II)instruments. </em><em>The results showed the growth of S. </em><em>s</em><em>errata male in Subang distric was </em><em>positive </em><em>allometric and the female was negative allometric</em><em>. </em><em>Growth coefficient (K) ranged from 0.21 to 0.43 in the estuary and from 0.28 to 0.89 in silvofishery area.</em><em> Exploitation rate in</em><em> the </em><em>silvofishery </em><em>area </em><em>has been </em><em>above the maximum exploitation rate. This study attempted to estimate the maximum size of inclusions in the ultra-low carbon Bake Hardening (BH) steels of automobile exposed panel. The Probable Maximum Sizes (PMS) of inclusions at the different steelmaking stages for BH steel with different sulfur contents were predicted by two methods of Statistics of Extreme Values (SEV) and Particle Size Distribution (PSD). The S content does not show a relationship with the PMS prediction of inclusions in the molten steel in which Al2O3 is the main inclusion, while the higher content of S leads to a larger PMS value in the slab, due to more number of large-sized Al2O3-MnS inclusions formed during solidification. The PMS value in the slab is greater than that in the molten steel for BH steel. Thus, the PMS of inclusions in the slab cannot be estimated from the molten steel samples. The SEV can be used to predict well the PMS values at different steelmaking stages for BH steels. However, the PSD of exponential function cannot predict well the PMS value in the slab for BH steel when considering all kinds of inclusions due to the large influence of small-sized MnS with high number density on the PSD of exponential function. When only considering Al2O3-MnS inclusions, the PSD of exponential function can make a reasonable PMS prediction in the slab, because the size distribution of Al2O3-MnS with large size can follow the exponential function.

This study examines the thermal insulation properties of panels made from recycled rubber. The reasons, in addition to the use in construction, are environmental protection, sustainable development, energy conservation. The thermal conductivity coefficient λ is the main characteristic, on the basis of which a decision is made on the choice of material as a heat insulator. Materials with λ <0.2 W / (m · K) are heat-insulating. Tested 3 composition of the material of different particle size distribution. It is shown that the key parameters that determine the heat-shielding properties of a material are its density and particle size distribution. It has been confirmed that with decreasing density the insulating properties of materials are improved. Compositions consisting of small grains have the best heat-insulating properties. After samples with grains of small size, in order of deterioration, samples of grains of large size and, finally, samples of mixed particle size distribution follow. The results also showed that the amount of binder in this case is negligible (4.2-7.5%) and practically does not affect the insulating properties of the material. AbstractIn birds, larger females generally have greater breeding propensity, reproductive investment, and success than do smaller females. However, optimal female body size also depends on how natural selection acts during other parts of the life cycle. Larger female Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) produce larger eggs than do smaller females, and ducklings from larger eggs survive better than those hatching from smaller eggs. Accordingly, we examined patterns of apparent annual survival for female scaup and tested whether natural selection on female body size primarily was stabilizing, a frequent assumption in studies of sexually dimorphic species in which males are the larger sex, or was directional, counteracting reproductive advantages of large size. We estimated survival using mark-recapture methods for individually marked females from two study sites in Canada (Erickson, Manitoba; St. Denis, Saskatchewan). Structurally larger (adults) and heavier (ducklings) females had lower survival than did smaller individuals in Manitoba; no relationship was detected in adults from Saskatchewan. Survival of adult females declined with indices of increasing reproductive effort at both sites; consequently, the cost of reproduction could explain age-related patterns of breeding propensity in scaup. Furthermore, if larger females are more likely to breed than are smaller females, then cost of reproduction also may help explain why survival was lower for larger females. Overall, we found that advantages of large body size of female scaup during breeding or as young ducklings apparently were counteracted by natural selection favoring lightweight juveniles and structurally smaller adult females through higher annual survival.Sobrevivencia de Aythya affinis: Efectos del Tamaño Corporal, Edad y Esfuerzo ReproductivoResumen. En las aves, las hembras de mayor tamaño generalmente presentan una mayor predisposición a la reproducción, mayor inversión reproductiva y mayor éxito que las hembras de menor tamaño. Sin embargo, el tamaño óptimo de la hembra también depende de cómo la selección natural opera durante otras etapas del ciclo de vida. Hembras de Aythya affinis más grandes producen huevos de mayor tamaño que hembras más pequeñas, y los polluelos provenientes de huevos más grandes sobreviven mejor que aquellos que eclosionan de huevos más pequeños. Consiguientemente, examinamos los patrones de sobrevivencia anual aparente para hembras de A. affinis y probamos si la selección natural sobre el tamaño del cuerpo de las hembras era principalmente estabilizadora (una suposición frecuente en estudios de especies sexualmente dimórficas en que los machos son el sexo mayor), o era direccional, contrarrestando las ventajas reproductivas de un tamaño mayor.
