Morphology and taxonomy of Dinophysis species of the section Hastata (Dinoflagellata), including the description of Dinophysis conjuncta sp. nov., from the Mexican marine waters

There have been recent attempts to improve our knowledge about dinoflagellates of the order Dinophysales either in Mexican marine waters or worldwide, and although new records and even new species have reliable illustrations and descriptions, this group is so diverse that it needs to be studied in more detail. This paper is the product of the analysis of net phytoplankton material collected from coasts of the tropical Mexican Pacific (Gulf of California, Central Mexican Pacific and Gulf of Tehuantepec), and the southern Gulf of Mexico. Material was studied using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Eleven taxa (10 species and one variety) of the section Hastata were fully identified, with nine species studied for the first time by electron microscopy (only Dinophysis hastata and D. schuettii had been previously studied by SEM), and including seven new records for the Mexican Pacific (Dinophysis monacantha, D. nias, D. phalacromoides, D. pusilla, D. swezyae, D. uracantha var. mediterranea, and D. uracanthoides), and one new record for the Gulf of Mexico (Dinophysis uracanthoides). Two species remain as unidentified, as only one specimen of each was found. Additionally, we studied in detail the new species, Dinophysis conjuncta sp. nov., for which a full description is provided. Descriptions, measurements, illustrations and local distribution data are provided for each species.

The sabellid genera Anamobaea Krøyer, 1856 and Notaulax Tauber, 1879 are two of the most attractive polychaete worms in coral reefs. Anamobaea is represented by two Caribbean species and Notaulax with 24 species from around the world, six of them previously known to tropical America. During examination of fouling biota and sclerozoans from Mexico, Anamobaea orstedii Krøyer, 1856 was found in coral reefs from the southern Gulf of Mexico and three species of Notaulax were identified to the Mexican Pacific, two of them being new species to science. Anamobaea orstedii Krøyer, 1856 is first reported as sclerozoan of dead coral from the southern Gulf of Mexico. An amendment to the generic diagnosis of Anamobaea is provided, based on the presence of a higher number of skeletal cells than previously recorded; height, shape and exposition of the anterior peristomial ring; the non-fusion of dorsal collar margins to faecal groove; shape of collar chaetiger and abdominal chaetae and distribution and shape of radiolar ocelli. Notaulax californica (Treadwell, 1906) is reported as fouling in buoys and docks from the Gulf of California. Two new species of Notaulax are described: the former was found in hull and dock fouling from La Paz (Gulf of California) and the second one as sclerozoan of oysters from a dock fouling in Acapulco (south Mexican Pacific). In addition, reproductive features are described for the first time for A. orstedii which is a simultaneous hermaphrodite with female and males gametes found within the same segments of abdominal region. Oocytes develop synchronously and sperm morphology (spherical nucleus and rounded acrosome, four spherical mitochondria and a long free flagellum) suggest an adaptation to broadcast spawning and external fertilisation. Species of Notaulax here examined were gonochoric, with gametes distributed in abdominal segments.

AbstractThe so-called unarmoured dinoflagellates are not a “natural” (phylogenetic) group but they lack thecal plates, share fragility and possess relatively few morphological characters that can be positively identified. This study depicts the species composition of unarmoured dinoflagellates collected from sites along the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Pacific and includes their descriptions and illustrations. We identified a total of 25 species belonging to 13 genera and six families that were studied through various techniques using light and scanning electron microscopy. Despite a recent revision of the dinoflagellates of the order Dinophysiales on Mexican coasts and a checklist of dinoflagellates from the Mexican Pacific, many records still need to be confirmed, for there are very few reliable illustrations and/or descriptions. In this paper, species composition and distribution of dinoflagellates belonging to the Dinophysiales, the product of the analysis of net phytoplankton material collected from coasts of the tropical Mexican Pacific (Jalisco to Chiapas) are presented. The material has been studied using light microscopy, although a few species were also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Forty-one species from five genera were identified, with two new records annotated for the Mexican Pacific: Amphisolenia thrinax and Metaphalacroma skogsbergii, and two new species of the genus Amphisolenia, Amphisolenia fusiformis sp. nov. and Amphisolenia michoacana sp. nov. Illustrations, dimensions and distribution data are provided for each species, and descriptions of the new species are also given. Amphisolenia palmata, A. rectangulata, A. truncata, Dinophysis apicata, D. hindmarchii, Histioneis biremis, H. crateriformis, H. pulchra, Ornithocercus cristatus, O. heteroporoides and O. orbiculatus are illustrated for the first time in the waters of the Mexican Pacific. The number of species found in this study is relatively low. The species Dinophysis norvegica and D. sacculus, reported in previous papers, do not seem to occur in Mexican waters, as their distribution is rather limited to the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic, respectively. Finally, the identity of certain species of Dinophysis and the nature of the new species described here are discussed.

We report range extensions of Chiropsalmus quadrumanus (Müller, 1859) and Tripedalia cystophora Conant, 1897 to 2 coastal lagoons in the southern Gulf of Mexico. These new records are the first for these species in Yucatán and Mexico.

Until now, 127 species of marine sponges have been recorded in the southern Gulf of Mexico (SGoM). In this study, we describe the sponge fauna recorded on 16 coral reefs of the SGoM, defined as the Mexican waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), during a period from 2005 to 2019. We report 80 sponge species, including 34 first geographic records for the southern GoM region. The latter are fully described and illustrated, taking into account 24 that represent new records for the GoM: Agelas conifera, Agelas sventres, Agelas wiedenmayeri, Prosuberites carriebowensis, Desmanthus meandroides, Cliona aprica, Cliona dioryssa, Placospongia ruetzleri, Haliclona (Gellius) megasclera, Haliclona (Reniera) aff. portroyalensis, Neopetrosia proxima, Xestospongia arenosa, Calyx podatypa, Shiphonodictyon xamaycaense, Acarnus innominatus, Iotrochota arenosa, Polymastia tenax, Svenzea cristinae, Svenzea flava, Svenzea tubulosa, Svenzea zeai, Timea stenosclera, Stellettinopsis megastylifera, Suberea flavolivescens. The present work highlights the understimated and remarkable diversity of reef-associated sponges within the Campeche Bank Coral reef systems. Present work data was compiled with existing published information to produce an updated list of 161 known sponges in the southern GoM.

The aim of this study is to analyse the Nephtyidae from the Gulf of California. Previous studies about the family Nephtyidae from the continental shelf of the Gulf include 21 species of which seven have been synonymized by several authors, so that at present only 14 species are recognized. In this study, 1763 specimens of Nephtyidae from the continental shelf of the Gulf of California were examined. Eight species were identified, from which Aglaophamus longicirrata sp. nov. and Aglaophamus foliosa sp. nov. are newly described. Aglaophamus longicirrata sp. nov. is characterized by the presence of very long dorsal cirri in median parapodia and by having 16 rows of subterminal papillae with 3–7 papillae per row, and a pair of middorsal papillae on the proboscis. Aglaophamus foliosa sp. nov. is characterized by foliaceous long dorsal cirri; the proboscis bears 16 rows of subterminal papillae and an irregular number of papillae per row, from 5 to 15. A taxonomic key is presented for the species of Nephtyidae recorded from the continental shelf of the Gulf of California, including the two new species of Aglaophamus.

This paper presents the ascidians from the Family Polyclinidae collected in the Gulf of Mexico during the Hourglass Cruises between August 1965 and November 1967. The analysis of the collected material revealed the presence of eight polyclinid ascidians from three different genera, with two new species and two new records for the Gulf of Mexico.

AbstractSponges are one of the most conspicuous groups of epibionts in mangrove prop root habitats. However, with the exception of the Caribbean and the Indo-Pacific regions, studies focused on species diversity are lacking in other locations that have high mangrove coverage and are relatively distant from coral reef environments. Because mangrove-root epibiont communities, in general, have been understudied worldwide, this research contributes to filling this knowledge gap. In this study, a total of 30 sponge species (belonging to three subclasses, 14 families and 19 genera) were recorded as epibionts on prop roots of the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle in a tropical coastal ecosystem of the Southern Gulf of Mexico. Of these, five were new records for the Gulf of Mexico, 14 were new for the Mexican coasts of the gulf and 25 were new for the study area. Moreover, a similarity analysis based on presence/absence data of mangrove-associated sponges reported throughout the Western Central Atlantic region revealed that the sponge assemblage from the study area was more similar to those documented in most of the Caribbean locations (Jamaica, Cuba, Martinique, Panama, Venezuela, Belize and Colombia) rather than with those of the Northeast of the Gulf of Mexico, Guadeloupe and Trinidad. This relative intra-regional dissimilarity in the structure of mangrove-associated sponge assemblages may be related to differences in environmental conditions as well as taxonomic effort. The study area, unlike most of the Caribbean locations, is characterized by estuarine conditions and high productivity throughout the year. The inter-site variability recorded in the composition of mangrove-associated sponges was influenced by a set of factors such as salinity, dissolved oxygen and hydrodynamism. This study shows the importance of exploring the mangrove-associated sponge assemblages from different regions of the world as it furthers knowledge of the biodiversity and global distribution of this group.
