This statement started its life as part of the State of the Profession panel at the joint ASTR/CORD conference in Seattle (November 2010). I was asked to respond to the question of “how power has worked on/through/with bodies in the fields of dance and theatre studies, and in the academy at large.” I decided to speak about the serious crisis facing higher education in light of the economic recession and its particular challenges to the academy and our field, using my present context in the UK, where I have lived since 2006, as a case study.

This chapter outlines the rationale behind conducting repeat interviews with out-of-work benefit claimants in an effort to better understand lived experiences of welfare reform. It introduces readers to the political and theoretical context, and highlights the value in employing social citizenship as a theoretical lens in order to tease out citizenship from above and below. The recent context of welfare reform in the UK is also introduced, highlighting the extent to which successive rounds of welfare reform have cumulatively reworked the relationship between the citizen and the state. The research on which this book is based is detailed, and the value in working through and across time by taking a qualitative longitudinal approach highlighted.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the power of experimental design as a technique to understand and evaluate the most important factors which influence teaching effectiveness for a postgraduate course in a higher education (HE) context.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology involves the execution of a case study in the form of an experiment in a business school setting. The experiment was carried out with the assistance of over 100 postgraduate students from 26 countries. The data were collected over a two year period (2015 and 2016) from a postgraduate course offered by the same tutor for repeatability reasons.FindingsThe key findings of the experiment have clearly indicated that students’ perceptions of teaching effectiveness based on intuition and guesswork are not identical to the outcomes from a simple designed experiment. Moreover, the results of the experiment provided a greater stimulus for the wider applications of the technique to other processes across the case study HE sector.Research limitations/implicationsOne of the limitations of the study is that the experiment was conducted for a popular postgraduate course. It would be beneficial to understand the results of the experiment for less popular postgraduate courses in the university in order to drive improvements. Moreover, this research was conducted only for postgraduate courses and the results may vary for undergraduate courses. This would be an interesting study to understand the differences in the factors between undergraduate and postgraduate teaching effectiveness.Practical implicationsThe outcome of this experiment would help everyone who is involved in teaching to understand the factors and their influences to improve students’ satisfaction scores during the delivery of teaching.Originality/valueThis paper shows how experimental design as a pure manufacturing technique can be extended to a HE setting.

This case study provides an overview of the logistical aspects of introducing a DIY streaming service, from original idea to implementation, at Coventry University. The study includes reflection on practical problems such as the structuring of file names and complying with the terms and conditions of the ERA licence. It concludes with a short discussion of the impact of the new ERA+ licence on levels of use, together with possible future developments in streaming in the UK Higher Education sector.

AbstractOne hundred years ago, Frederick Taylor and the pioneers of scientific management went into battle on US factory-floors. Armed with stopwatches and clipboards, they were fighting a war over measure. A century on and capitalist production has spread far beyond the factory walls and the confines of 'national economies'. Although capitalism increasingly seems to rely on 'cognitive' and 'immaterial' forms of labour and social cooperation, the war over measure continues. Armies of economists, statisticians, management-scientists, information-specialists, accountants and others are engaged in a struggle to connect heterogeneous concrete human activities on the basis of equal quantities of human labour in the abstract – that is, to link work and capitalist value. In this paper, we discuss contemporary capital's attempt to (re)impose the 'law of value' through its measuring of immaterial labour. Using the example of higher education in the UK – a 'frontline' of capitalist development – as our case-study, we explain how measuring takes places on various 'self-similar' levels of social organisation. We suggest that such processes are both diachronic and synchronic: socially-necessary labour-times of 'immaterial doings' are emerging and being driven down at the same time as heterogeneous concrete activities are being made commensurable. Alongside more overt attacks on academic freedom, it is in this way that neoliberalism appears on campus.

In 1994-95 Nepali historian Pratyoush Onta put together a team of four scholars to start a journal about Nepal. They gave it the name Studies in Nepali History and Society (SINHAS) and arranged for it to be published by a new commercial publisher based in Kathmandu, Nepal. First published in 1996, SINHAS is now entering its second decade of publication. The experience of editing SINHAS, doing research on the state of South Asian Studies in India (Onta 2001), and on the state of Nepal Studies in the UK (Onta 2004a, 2004b) have expanded Pratyoush's interests in the general politics of academic knowledge production, distribution and consumption. British anthropologist Ian Harper was interviewed by Onta in relation to this (Harper 2004) and shares similar interests around the politics of knowledge and questions of epistemology and ethics. Harper and Onta have been jointly thinking about the politics of knowledge generation about Nepal for some time now. In this piece, recorded as a conversation in Kathmandu in 2004, they start with the implications of publishing on Nepal in prestigious journals outside of Nepal. Issues arise over tensions around choosing where to publish, questions of quality and the review process, something about which there should be more empirical and academic discussion. Finally, Pratyoush recounts his experience of setting up, and maintaining SINHAS.


While defining resilience is recognised as complex with recent research highlighting the disparity of interpretations, there is however, a common appreciation of the wide range of contributory factors impacting on students’ resilience within the Higher Education sector. These can include but are not limited to, an increasingly competitive environment for graduate jobs, increased financial pressure from student tuition fees, alongside the more traditional concerns of moving away from home and transitioning towards greater independence. Building on previous research at the University of Surrey with high achieving students, this paper outlines the development and delivery of a student focused workshop designed to enable the participants to build their understanding of resilience using different but complementary pedagogic approaches: LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® and Concept Mapping. The case study included within this paper demonstrates one student’s reflection of the workshop and previous experiences which have contributed to their own resilience. What has become apparent at the University of Surrey, and more broadly within the UK Higher Education sector, is that universities have a vital role to play in fostering positive mindsets amongst students and developing strong and resilient independent learners.

Sabe-se que a educação é uma das circunstâncias necessárias para que haja transformação na vida e no ambiente das pessoas e com a educação superior, em expansão e crescimento acelerado no Brasil, vivencia-se um novo aspecto, o crescimento local e regional das cidades. Partindo destes pressupostos, este artigo procurou verifcar qual foi a expansão do Ensino Superior no Estado de Mato Grosso, analisando os dados da Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso (Unemat) e de que forma a expansão proporcionou o desenvolvimento dos municípios. A pesquisa se caracteriza como uma pesquisa exploratória, de abordagem quantitativa, com a realização de um estudo de caso. Foram analisados dados de dois censos do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografa e Estatística (IBGE): 2000 e 2010 e constatou-se, com os dados coletados, que a Unemat aumentou o número de cursos e o número de vagas no decorrer da década, demonstrando indícios de contribuição no aumento do PIB e do IDHM dos municípios em que a universidade atua.Palavras-chave: Educação. Based on these assumptions, this article aimed to fnd what the expansion of higher education in the state of Mato Grosso was, analyzing the data of the State University of Mato Grosso (Unemat) and how the expansion enabled the municipalities’ development. The research is characterized as an exploratory research with a quantitative approach, with the completion of a case study. Data were analyzed from two censuses of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE): 2000 and 2010 and found out with the data collected that Unemat increased the number of courses and the number of jobs during the decade demonstrating evidence of contribution to increases in GDP and IDHM of the municipalities in which the university operates.Keywords: Education.
