AbstractThis paper describes briefly the coordinates that have been used with satellite systems that measure range or range-rate, and it shows that the methods previously used to define them lead naturally to the coordinate system needed for a dynamic Earth. This is one in which the Earth has no linear momentum and no angular momentum, and it is the only system that allows the motion of the Earth to be separated into a translation, a rotation, and an internal motion, and that preserves the usual forms of the equations of motion. The observations needed to define this system are outlined.

This paper is the third in a trilogy dealing with simple, nonholonomic systems which, while in motion, change their number of degrees-of-freedom (defined as the number of independent generalized speeds required to describe the motion in question). The first of the trilogy introduced the theory underlying the dynamical equations of motion of such systems. The second dealt with the evaluation of noncontributing forces and of noncontributing impulses during such motion. This paper deals with the linear momentum, angular momentum, and mechanical energy of these systems. Specifically, expressions for changes in these quantities during imposition and removal of constraints are formulated in terms of the associated changes in the generalized speeds.

AbstractThe current need for more precisely defined reference coordinate systems arises for geodynamics because the Earth can certainly not be treated as a rigid body when measurement uncertainties reach the few centimeter scale or its angular equivalent. At least two coordinate systems seem to be required. The first is a system defined in space relative to appropriate astronomical objects. This system should approximate an inertial reference frame, or be accurately related to such a reference, because only such a coordinate system is suitable for ultimately expressing the dynamical equations of motion for the Earth. The second required coordinate system must be associated with the nonrigid Earth in some well defined way so that the rotational motions of the whole Earth are meaningfully represented by the transformation parameters relating the Earth system to the space-inertial system. The Earth system should be defined so that the dynamical equations for relative motions of the various internal mechanical components of the Earth and accurate measurements of these motions are conveniently expressed in this system.

We study a general relativistic gravitomagnetic 3-body effect induced by the spin angular momentum S X of a rotating mass M X orbited at distance r X by a local gravitationally bound restricted two-body system S of size r ≪ r X consisting of a test particle revolving around a massive body M. At the lowest post-Newtonian order, we analytically work out the doubly averaged rates of change of the Keplerian orbital elements of the test particle by finding non-vanishing long-term effects for the inclination I, the node Ω and the pericenter ω . Such theoretical results are confirmed by a numerical integration of the equations of motion for a fictitious 3-body system. We numerically calculate the magnitudes of the post-Newtonian gravitomagnetic 3-body precessions for some astronomical scenarios in our solar system. For putative man-made orbiters of the natural moons Enceladus and Europa in the external fields of Saturn and Jupiter, the relativistic precessions due to the angular momenta of the gaseous giant planets can be as large as ≃10 − 50 milliarcseconds per year (mas year−1). A preliminary numerical simulation shows that, for certain orbital configurations of a hypothetical Europa orbiter, its range-rate signal Δ ρ ˙ can become larger than the current Doppler accuracy of the existing spacecraft Juno at Jupiter, i.e., σ ρ ˙ = 0.015 mm s−1, after 1 d. The effects induced by the Sun’s angular momentum on artificial probes of Mercury and the Earth are at the level of ≃ 1 − 0.1 microarcseconds per year (μas year −1).

AbstractTrans-Neptunian satellite systems and embryos of the Earth-Moon system could be formed as a result of contraction of rarefied condensations. The angular momenta of rarefied condensations needed for such formation could be acquired at collisions of condensations. The angular momentum of the present Earth-Moon system could be acquired at a collision of two rarefied condensations with a total mass not smaller than 0.1ME, where ME is the mass of the Earth. The mass of the condensation that was a parent for the embryos of the Earth and the Moon could be about 0.01ME, if we take into account the growth of the angular momentum of the embryos with growth of their masses. The Moon embryo could get by an order of magnitude more material ejected from the Earth embryo than that fell directly onto the Moon embryo.

The motion of an artificial satellite around the Moon is much more complicated than that around the Earth, since the shape of the Moon is a triaxial ellipsoid and the effect of the Earth on the motion is very important even for a very close satellite.The differential equations of motion of the satellite are written in canonical form of three degrees of freedom with time depending Hamiltonian. By eliminating short-periodic terms depending on the mean longitude of the satellite and by assuming that the Earth is moving on the lunar equator, however, the equations are reduced to those of two degrees of freedom with an energy integral.Since the mean motion of the Earth around the Moon is more rapid than the secular motion of the argument of pericentre of the satellite by a factor of one order, the terms depending on the longitude of the Earth can be eliminated, and the degree of freedom is reduced to one.Then the motion can be discussed by drawing equi-energy curves in two-dimensional space. According to these figures satellites with high inclination have large possibilities of falling down to the lunar surface even if the initial eccentricities are very small.The principal properties of the motion are not changed even if plausible values ofJ3andJ4of the Moon are included.This paper has been published in Publ. astr. AbstractFive important geodynamical quantities which are closely linked are: 1) motions of points on the Earth’s surface; 2)polar motion; 3) changes in UT1-UTC; 4) nutation; and 5) motion of the geocenter. For each of these we expect to achieve measurements in the near future which have an accuracy of 1 to 3 cm or 0.3 to 1 milliarcsec.From a metrological point of view, one can say simply: “Measure each quantity against whichever coordinate system you can make the most accurate measurements with respect to”. I believe that this statement should serve as a guiding principle for the recommendations of the colloquium. However, it also is important that the coordinate systems help to provide a clear separation between the different phenomena of interest, and correspond closely to the conceptual definitions in terms of which geophysicists think about the phenomena.In any discussion of angular motion in space, both a “body-fixed” system and a “space-fixed” system are used. Some relevant types of coordinate systems, reference directions, or reference points which have been considered are: 1) celestial systems based on optical star catalogs, distant galaxies, radio source catalogs, or the Moon and inner planets; 2) the Earth’s axis of rotation, which defines a line through the Earth as well as a celestial reference direction; 3) the geocenter; and 4) “quasi-Earth-fixed” coordinate systems.When a geophysicists discusses UT1 and polar motion, he usually is thinking of the angular motion of the main part of the mantle with respect to an inertial frame and to the direction of the spin axis. Since the velocities of relative motion in most of the mantle are expectd to be extremely small, even if “substantial” deep convection is occurring, the conceptual “quasi-Earth-fixed” reference frame seems well defined. Methods for realizing a close approximation to this frame fortunately exist. Hopefully, this colloquium will recommend procedures for establishing and maintaining such a system for use in geodynamics. Motion of points on the Earth’s surface and of the geocenter can be measured against such a system with the full accuracy of the new techniques.The situation with respect to celestial reference frames is different. The various measurement techniques give changes in the orientation of the Earth, relative to different systems, so that we would like to know the relative motions of the systems in order to compare the results. However, there does not appear to be a need for defining any new system. Subjective figures of merit for the various system dependon both the accuracy with which measurements can be made against them and the degree to which they can be related to inertial systems.The main coordinate system requirement related to the 5 geodynamic quantities discussed in this talk is thus for the establishment and maintenance of a “quasi-Earth-fixed” coordinate system which closely approximates the motion of the main part of the mantle. Changes in the orientation of this system with respect to the various celestial systems can be determined by both the new and the conventional techniques, provided that some knowledge of changes in the local vertical is available. Changes in the axis of rotation and in the geocenter with respect to this system also can be obtained, as well as measurements of nutation.

This work derives and applies a method for the investigation of numerical accuracy in computational fluid dynamics. The method is used to investigate discretization errors in computations of swirling flow in water turbines. The work focuses on the conservation of a subset of the angular momentum equations that is particularly important to swirling flow in water turbines. The method is based on the fact that the discretized angular momentum equations are not necessarily conserved when the discretized linear momentum equations are solved. However, the method can be used to investigate the effect of discretization on any equation that should be conserved in the correct solution, and the application is not limited to water turbines. Computations made for two Kaplan water turbine runners and a simplified geometry of one of the Kaplan runner ducts are investigated to highlight the general and simple applicability of the method.

New techniques of measurement make it possible in 1984 to determine positions on the surface of the Earth to a much higher precision than was possible in 1884. If we look beyond the requirements of navigation we can see useful applications of global geodetic positioning to centimetric accuracy for such purposes as the control of mapping and the study of crustal movements. These new techniques depend upon observations of external objects, such as satellites or quasars rather than stars, and they require that the positions of these objects and the orientation of the surface of the Earth are both known with respect to an appropriate external reference system that is ‘fixed’ in space. We need networks of observing stations and analysis centres that monitor the motions of the external objects and the rotation of the Earth. Observations of stars by a transit circle are no longer adequate for this purpose.

The present research studies the motion of a particle or a spacecraft that comes from an orbit around the Sun, which can be elliptic or hyperbolic, and that makes a passage close enough to the Earth such that it crosses its atmosphere. The idea is to measure the Sun-particle two-body energy before and after this passage in order to verify its variation as a function of the periapsis distance, angle of approach, and velocity at the periapsis of the particle. The full system is formed by the Sun, the Earth, and the particle or the spacecraft. The Sun and the Earth are in circular orbits around their center of mass and the motion is planar for all the bodies involved. The equations of motion consider the restricted circular planar three-body problem with the addition of the atmospheric drag. The initial conditions of the particle or spacecraft (position and velocity) are given at the periapsis of its trajectory around the Earth.
