Surface velocity and deformation, radar sounding, and aerial photography data are used to describe the flow of Ross Ice Shelf around Crary Ice Rise. A continuous band of crevasses around the ice rise now allows the complete boundary to be mapped for the first time. The dynamics of three distinctly different areas of ice flow are studied. Just up-stream of the ice rise, there is a region of ice rumples dominated by intense longitudinal compression (0.01 a−1) and lateral tension. On the south-west side of the ice rise, intense shear (0.03 a−1) dominates, with the boundary layer of affected ice-shelf motion extending over 20 km from the ice-rise edge into the ice shelf. North-west of the ice rise, a crevasse-free block of ice, 40 km × 7 km, appears to have separated from the main ice rise and is now moving with the ice shelf. We refer to such moving blocks of ice as rafts. The separation of this raft is calculated to have occurred 20 ± 10 years ago. Other possible rafts are identified, including one on the south-west side of the ice rise which appears to be in the process of separating. Mechanisms for the formation of rafts are discussed.

The shape, surface features, composition, and thickness of icebergs trapped annually in a 200 km long coastal strip of fast ice have been examined to determine their sources and movement. The thin western ice front of the Ross Ice Shelf seems to produce about 40% of the icebergs while local glaciers produce the remainder. The ice-shelf icebergs are carried west towards Ross Island then north up the western side of the Ross Sea. A small proportion of them gets trapped mainly by grounding on shallow areas of the sea floor which protrude across the regional long-shore currents.

The volcanic rocks of north-west Nugssuaq are highly faulted. In order to throw some light on the details of their structure the author undertook detailed mapping in various parts of Nugssuaq in 1971 and 1972; Marrait kitdlît was one of the areas investigated. Marrait kitdlît is situated on the south-west side of the Nugssuaq peninsula 6 km south-east of the mouth of the Itivdle valley.

The arrival in January 2001 in the south-west Ross Sea of two giant icebergs, C16 and B15A, subsequently had dramatic affects on two emperor penguin colonies. B15A collided with the north-west tongue of the Ross Ice Shelf at Cape Crozier, Ross Island, in the following months and destroyed the penguins' nesting habitat. The colony totally failed in 2001, and years after, with the icebergs still in place, exhibited reduced production that ranged from 0 to 40% of the 1201 chicks produced in 2000. At Beaufort Island, 70 km NW of Crozier, chick production declined to 6% of the 2000 count by 2004. Collisions with the Ross Ice Shelf at Cape Crozier caused incubating adults to be crushed, trapped in ravines, or to abandon the colony and, since 2001, to occupy poorer habitat. The icebergs separated Beaufort Island from the Ross Sea Polynya, formerly an easy route to feeding and wintering areas. This episode has provided a glimpse of events which have probably occurred infrequently since the West Antarctic Ice Sheet began to retreat 12 000 years ago. The results allow assessment of recovery rates for one colony decimated by both adult and chick mortality, and the other colony by adult abandonment and chick mortality.

BRIMSTONE HILL, 779 feet high, on the north-west side of the island of St. Kitts, or St. Christopher, about a third of a mile from the sea, lies about 2½ miles south-west of Mount Misery, the culminating point, which is said to be 3,711 feet high and to have a crater lake. Several other peaks of the island rise to over 1,000 feet, and to the south-east of Mount Misery another weathered cone is Mount Olivees, 2,781 feet high. About 12 miles to the north-west of St. Kitts is the Dutch island of St. Eustatius, or Statia, a dormant volcanic cone about 594 metres high on the south-west side of which great slabs of white sedimentary rock, called the White Wall, are seen tilted up against the side to a height of 315 metres. Further still to the north-west is the volcanic cone of Saba. South-east of St. Kitts, and nearly adjoining it is Nevis, which consists of a central cone and several subsidiary craters. These islands—Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Kitts, and Nevis—lie in a slightly curved line in a north-west and south-east direction.

In modern Icelandic, spoken in the South, West, and North-West of Iceland, there is a phonemic opposition between voiced and voiceless nasals before stop consonants. For the present investigation the research instrument was the velograph. The purpose of the research was to investigate patterns of velar movement associated with each type of nasal consonants. The results show different types of velar movement organized according to two separate temporal patterns. For the voiceless nasals the movement of the velum is more rapid and begins earlier than for the voiced nasals. There are also significant differences in the nasalization of the preceding vowel according to whether the following nasal consonant is voiced or voiceless.

I found this inscription in the ruins of a church called Agia Irenè, about a quarter of an hour's distance from the village of Apolakkia in Rhodes. This village is situated near the sea on the south-west side of the island (see my Travels and Discoveries, i., p. 198).This inscription contains part of two decrees, of which the first was passed by the κοινόν of the Euthalidai. The upper part of the stone being wanting, we only know the latter part of this first decree, from which we learn that a crown had been voted by the κοινόν to Sosikrates, son of Kleonymos, a Netteian, and that this honour was to be publicly proclaimed in the usual manner. We learn further that it was necessary that this decree should be confirmed by a Boulè, ‘senate,’ and Demos, ‘popular assembly,’ to the control of which the Euthalidai were subject.

AbstractDuring the 1976—77 season of the Ross Ice Shelf Geophysical and Glaciological Survey, a series of vertical electromagnetic sounding profiles of subsurface features was completed at station J-9. The survey comprised three five-kilometer north-west-south-east profiles separated by one kilometer and six two-kilometer north-east-south-west profiles, and was carried out on the surface using 35 MHz and 50 MHz radar systems. Folded-dipole antennae were used and oriented to detect reflectors both along and perpendicular to the profile path. This was done to facilitate the interpretation of the data, which indicated a complex system of bottom crevasses. Measurements of the positions, heights, and shapes of these crevasses showed at least two sets of crevasses varying in both strike and size. The larger crevasses, about 120 m high and oriented more or less normal to the flow direction, are probably associated with the movement of ice stream B across the grounding line between the West Antarctic ice sheet and the Ross Ice Shelf. A satisfactory explanation for the secondary set of crevasses, about 60 m high and forming an angle of 60° ±10° with the first set, has not yet been found.

Marx met the then 22 years old Blind) for the first time in May 1848, when he and Engels made their appearance in the revolutionary state of Baden (Germany), after the Neue Rheinische Zeitung had been suspended. At that time they declared to the members of the republican committee at Karlsruhe (Landesa usschuss), that they considered the revolt in the South-West of Germany irretrievably doomed to failure, if no decisive moves in Hungary or another revolution in Paris should come to its rescue. The only members of the committee who supported this opinion were, as stated by Engels), Karl Blind and Amand Gögg. Soon afterwards Marx and Blind met again in Paris. On September 5 Marx gave Blind's address to Freiligrath as his own. Blind had been sent to France by the revolutionary governments of Baden and the Palatinate as one of the members of the legation, which these two shortlived republics intended to establish there. But Louis Napoleon's government ignored this legation, and consequently did not respect Blind's diplomatic immunity, when the latter, soon after his arrival, proved to be involved in the abortive coup of Ledru-Rollin of June 13. Blind was placed under arrest and expelled from France on the same day, on the ground that his presence was “such as to disturb public order and calm”.
