ABSTRACTA report on an interdisciplinary e-course experiment on language, literature and culture in the Indian Diaspora. One of the rich potentials of the World Wide Web is to enable international and interdisciplinary projects by utilizing e-learning technologies. Further, contemporary students are used to structuring much of their public and private life and learning around the use of electronic technologies. Certainly, when learning, thinking and working are no longer solitary activities, then traditional notions of teaching must be redesigned throughout our educational institutions in order to meet the challenges of the communication age – language teaching and the humanities at our universities cannot be an. Since the classroom can transcend spatially limited locations, it can transform the ‘traditional scene of instruction […] into a joint venture involving many scholars, including our students as active researchers’.

Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) can be slow in responding to technological innovation. Streaming technology offers a competitive advantage to a HEI if appropriately adopted and integrated with the marketing strategy compared to the Push-Pull strategy: when all available technological innovation is used to push educational options to the market and the potential people pull from the market. This chapter briefly describes the concepts of e-learning and media streaming, and their relationship to HEIs. The intangible business benefits of using media streaming to enhance teaching and learning in HEIs are explored through a literature review and small sample survey. The case study of a UK university is used to represent a HEI; e-learning technology is already in use within the university, considering the integration of media streaming technology into new or existing learning technologies. The hardware and software requirements are briefly examined, and possible business concerns and risks are identified with recommendations.

Purpose Although e-learning has already been accepted globally as an effective medium of delivery of quality education and ensure optimum student participation, Bangladeshi higher educational institutions are still at a very early stage of adopting such technologies. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to critically examine the suitability of implementing effective e-learning through learning management system (LMS) at the tertiary educational institutions in Bangladesh, and how both students and teachers experience and respond to this new learning platform. Following mixed-methods techniques, data for this study were collected from students and respective course teachers of a private university in Bangladesh by administering questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The findings of this paper reveal that e-learning has been well accepted by most of the students as they are found routinely spending time on the LMS on a regular basis for watching lecture videos, viewing course information, reading postings of the fellow students in the forum. However, there are constraints as well, since the learning materials are poorly designed that do not allow much interaction between students and lecturers. There are also some technical problems such as poor internet connection which restrict access to e-learning platforms. To harness the optimum benefit of e-learning, this paper recommends a concerted effort by all stakeholders, such as students, lecturers, administrators and policy makers so that each of their priorities and expectations are reflected in the designing and implementing e-learning platforms. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on the qualitative evaluation of Education 3.0 platform. Primary data were collected from the students using a well-structured survey questionnaire, and the findings of the survey have subsequently been cross-referred and supplemented by non-participatory observations with semi-structured interviews which allowed a better in-depth understanding of the issue at hand. Findings The findings of the study suggest that a majority of the students are found to be highly enthusiastic about the online courses. They are eager to participate and interact in the online platforms, which are somehow limited in the traditional classroom settings. However, there are several institutional, administrative and technical limitations of implementing e-learning in Bangladesh. It is recommended that better orientation of the users, quality content distribution though user-friendly systems and enhanced asynchronous interaction between the lecturers and students are the key pre-requisites to harness the optimum benefit from e-learning technologies in Bangladesh. Originality/value The data have been analyzed and discussed using qualitative framework which allows an in-depth understanding of the opportunities and challenges of the use of e-learning technologies at the higher educational institutions in Bangladesh.

As mobile phones become more and more common, the term mobile learning has received a lot of attention in recent years. Although teachers at educational institutions and managers in companies are aware of this new learning mode, many are uncertain if such adoption of technology is suitable for them. They are also puzzled by the various forms of e-learning, including Learning Management System (LMS), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC), Augmented Reality (AR) and Student Response Systems (SRS). This aim of this chapter is to provide educators and managers with an overview of the different forms of e-learning. It begins by reviewing LMS and MOOC, and then it focuses on SRS and AR. The following three types of SRSs are discussed – Clicker-based, Mobile phone-based and Game-based. Exemplars are described to show the benefits of mobile learning when it is properly designed and well-implemented by the educators in an urban environment. The chapter concludes by stating the implications of mobile learning technologies for working professionals.

Port authorities constitute very active organizations that frequently interact with citizens as well as public and private organizations. The employees and administration of port authorities require effective e-government services in order to implement their tasks. The required services should provide effective information flow and collaboration to improve decision making, governance, and integration of all sectors. In this chapter, the authors briefly outline issues concerning the usefulness of intranets in organizations and corresponding services provided to organization employees. They briefly present key aspects of certain recent approaches concerning e-governance and intranets in ports. The authors also present a case study involving the e-government services implemented for Patras’s Port Authority in Greece. The specific port authority has a lot of workload because the corresponding port is the third largest in Greece and a main gate to countries abroad. The case study combined Internet-based technologies with e-learning technologies. E-learning services assist employees in acquainting themselves with newly introduced e-government services. Therefore, e-learning may contribute in the successful realization of e-government projects.

Novel Coronavirus leads all the educational institutions to think of e-learning platforms to continue the education. E-learning tools are playing a crucial role during this pandemic, it aims to help instructors, and universities facilitate student learning during periods of university closure. The study attempts to examine the influence of e-learning factors on student’s learning focusing on teacher, content, technology, student. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 249 bachelor students through a web-based survey at Arab Open University and was analyzed with various statistical tools which can be used to test the relationship between the variables. However, it was revealed that teachers, content, technology, and students play a significant role in the e-learning system. Through a stepwise multiple regression model, it was revealed that e-learning plays a significant role in knowledge enhancement and student learning. Further noted that gender, mode of study, program of study has a significant effect on e-learning factors. Students were exposed to the e-learning system and feel more confident and comfortable while working on it. It is therefore recommended that an e-learning environment can increase the learning potential of the students. e-learning is a good solution during this pandemic situation. Students should be motivated and satisfied with the instructor's support and course policies tend to perceive their learning outcomes higher. Both teachers and students have had to re-adapt the way they prepare, access, and engage with e-learning environment. Even though there are few challenges in adopting e-learning technologies, the educational institutions are supporting in all possible ways and provide an uninterpreted education to all the student community
