In 1922 the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) Council approved a motion to send an invitation to Albert Einstein to visit Argentina and give a course of lectures on his theory of relativity. The motion was proposed by Jorge Duclout (1856–1927), who had been educated at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, Zurich (ETH). This proposal was the culmination of a series of initiatives of various Argentine intellectuals interested in the theory of relativity. In a very short time Dr. Mauricio Nirenstein (1877–1935), then the university's administrative secretary, fulfilled all the requirements for the university's invitation to be endorsed and delivered to the sage in Berlin. The visit took place three years later, in March–April 1925.

Daniel Martin B.Sc., M.A., Ph.D., F.R.S.E. was born in Carluke on 16 April 1915, the only child of William and Rose Martin (née Macpherson). The family home in which he was born, Cygnetbank in Clyde Street, had been remodelled and extended by his father, and it was to be Dan's home all his life. His father, who was a carpenter and joiner, had a business based in School Lane, but died as a result of a tragic accident when Dan was only six. Thereafter Dan was brought up single handedly by his mother.After attending primary school in Carluke from 1920 to 1927, Dan entered the High School of Glasgow. It was during his third year there that he started studying calculus on his own. He became so enthused by the subject that he set his sights on a career teaching mathematics, at university if at all possible. On leaving school in 1932, he embarked on the M.A. honours course in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. At that time the Mathematics Department was under the leadership of Professor Thomas MacRobert; the honours course in Mathematics consisted mainly of geometry, calculus and analysis, and the combined honours M.A. with Natural Philosophy was the standard course for mathematicians. A highlight of his first session at university was attending a lecture on the origins of the general theory of relativity, given on 20th June 1933 by Albert Einstein. This was the first of a series of occasional lectures on the history of mathematics funded by the George A. Gibson Foundation which had been set up inmemory of the previous head of the Mathematics Department. From then on, relativity was to be one of Dan's great interests, lasting a lifetime; indeed, on holiday in Iona the year before he died, Dan's choice of holiday reading included three of Einstein's papers.

Editor's Note: There is probably no modern scientist as famous as Albert Einstein. Born in Germany in 1879 and educated in physics and mathematics at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, he was at first unable to find a teaching post, working instead as a technical assistant in the Swiss Patent Office from 1901 until 1908. Early in 1905, Einstein published “A New Determination of Molecular Dimensions,” a paper that earned him a Ph.D. from the University of Zurich. More papers followed, and Einstein returned to teaching, in Zurich, in Prague, and eventually in Berlin, where an appointment in 1914 to the Prussian Academy of Sciences allowed him to concentrate on research. In November of 1919, the Royal Society of London announced that a scientific expedition had photographed a solar eclipse and completed calculations that verified the predictions that Einstein had made in a paper published three years before on the general theory of relativity. Virtually overnight, Einstein was hailed as the world's greatest genius, instantly recognizable, thanks to “his great mane of crispy, frizzled and very black hair, sprinkled with gray and rising high from a lofty brow” (as Romain Rolland described in his diary). In the essay excerpted here, and first published in 1936, Einstein demonstrates his substantial interest in philosophy as well as science. He is pragmatic, in insisting that the only test of concepts is their usefulness in describing the physical world, yet also idealistic, in aiming for the minimum number of concepts to achieve that description. In 1933, Einstein renounced his German citizenship and moved to the United States, where he lived until his death in 1955. A recipient of the Nobel Prize in physics in 1921, he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1924.

As in other countries, the public in Argentina became aware of the existence of something called “the theory of relativity” only after November 1919. Although the news of Arthur Eddington's eclipse expedition, which provided the first confirmation of Einstein's theory, was poorly reported in the newspapers, by the end of 1920 Einstein had become a household name for the educated middle class of Buenos Aires, the capital city of the country. This was in great measure the result of the activity of a few enthusiastic lecturers. Significantly, none of them belonged to the prestigious Institute of Physics of the University of La Plata, which during the decade of the 1910s was considered the most important center of physical research in Latin America. Between July and August 1920 the Spanish physicist Blas Cabrera – perhaps the greatest popularizer of Einstein's theory in Spain – visited Argentina and talked about relativity. In September Georges Duclout, a French engineer who had graduated from the Zurich Polytechnic and by then was professor of applied mechanics at the School of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (FCEFyN) of the University of Buenos Aires, also gave a series of conferences on the subject. That same month José Ubach, a Jesuit astronomer trained at the Ebro Observatory in Spain, and established in Buenos Aires, lectured on relativity at the Colegio del Salvador.

This chapter discusses the roles of ether and electrons in relativity theory. One of the most radical moves made by Albert Einstein was to dismiss the ether from electrodynamics. His fellow physicists felt challenged by Einstein’s view, and they came up with a variety of responses, ranging from enthusiastic approval to dismissive rejection. Among the naysayers were the electron theorists, who were unanimous in their affirmation of the ether, even if they agreed with other aspects of Einstein’s theory of relativity. The eventual success of the latter theory (c.1911) owed much to Hermann Minkowski’s idea of four-dimensional spacetime, which was portrayed as a conceptual substitute of sorts for the ether.

The Euclidean geometry was developed as a mathematical system due to generalizing thousands years of measurements on the plane and spherical surfaces. The development of celestial mechanics and stellar astronomy confirmed its validity as mathematical principles of natural philosophy, in particular for studying the Solar System bodies’ and Galaxy stars motions. In the non-Euclidean geometries by Lobachevsky and Riemann, the third axiom of modern geometry manuals is substituted. We show that the third axiom of these manuals is a corollary of the Fifth Euclidean postulate. The idea of spherical, Riemannian space of the Universe and local curvatures of space, depending on body mass, was inculcated into celestial mechanics, astronomy and geodesy along with the theory of relativity. The mathematical apparatus of the relativity theory was created from immeasurable quantities

What does the learning of social sciences to the trajectories of young citizens? What to teach social sciences in secondary school? Why curricular changes in Argentina did not change classroom practices? We believe that the answers to these questions involve, though not exclusively, in the field of teacher training. Precisely, this paper aims to reflect on the characteristics of the training of teachers of History and Sociology at the University of Buenos Aires, taking account both the disciplinary aspects of the pedagogical-comment- from our students and our experience as teachers of these teaching careers. We are concerned to analyze, in particular, the presence / absence of epistemological contained in the careers of these faculties and their implications when thinking teaching.

The year 1985 was a landmark in Canadian biology, for it witnessed both the first Canadian Congress of Biology and the 80th birthday of Professor Vladimir Joseph Krajina. Because Krajina's work has had an impact on more than one biological discipline, we believed that the congress would be an appropriate forum to pay tribute to one of Canada's premier ecologists and botanists. Krajina has done much to awaken Canada's environmental consciousness and shape its ecological thinking and, in the process, has made major contributions to the international discipline of ecology.Professor Krajina was born in 1905 in Slavice, a small Moravian village in Czechoslovakia. Historians of science have characterized 1905 as “the miraculous year.” That was the year Albeit Einstein published the theory of relativity and George Santayana began his book The Life of Reason with the following first line printed in boldface, “Man affects his environment, sometimes to good purpose.” E. M. Forster published his Where Angels Fear to Tread, Vladimir Lenin his Two Tactics of Social Democracy in the Democratic Revolution, and Sigmund Freud his Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex. That year, the English novelist and science educator C. P. Snow was born, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan were formed.It was a very significant year for ecology as well. The first American textbook, Research Methods in Ecology, was published by a then little-known ecologist named Frederick E. Clements. Carl Raunkiaer in Denmark published his Types biologiques pour la géographie botanique, later to be cited in ecological literature as Raunkiaer's system of life forms and biological spectra. In addition, Karel Domin, who would become Krajina's mentor, published Das böhmische Mittelgebirge in Czechoslovakia.Krajina received his doctorate at the age of 22 from Charles University in Prague. There, he rose to become Professor of Botany and Head of the Department of Plant Sociology and Ecology. Krajina was a major force in the Second World War. A champion of democracy and possessing immense foresight and fortitude, he provided strategic information to the Allies, not without great personal hardship. This aspect of his life is beyond the scope of this review, but many volumes are available that document his indomitable courage and his contributions (see, for example, J. Korbel, The Communist Subversion of Czechoslovakia, Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ, 1959). After the war, he received both military and civilian medals and was elected to the Czechoslovakian parliament.He arrived in Vancouver in 1949. Not in possession of his transcripts or even a reprint of his own work, he joined the University of British Columbia as Lady Davis Foundation Fellow and Special Lecturer, and later attained the rank of full professor. It was here that he developed the ecological schema that bear his imprint and guided 33 students through their doctoral and master's programs. Highly respected as a teacher and researcher, he has left an indelible mark on Canadian ecology. His contributions have been recognized by honorary degrees from major universities, by medals of honor from many societies, and in several feature films on environment from the National Film Board of Canada. Even today, he remains active in finalizing his massive treatise on the ecology of British Columbia vegetation.In presenting this series of papers as a tribute to Professor Krajina, it was the intention of the organizers to reflect on two contemporary topics of ecology, rather than present a comprehensive overview or a complete documentation of Krajina's contributions. What is presented here, therefore, is a series of ecological vignettes on community organization and ecosystem conservation, areas of science in which Professor Krajina has played a major role.The organizers extend their warm thanks to Professor Jennifer Shay of the University of Manitoba for her help and assistance, to Professor Jack Major for writing the epilogue, to Professor Taylor A. Steeves, who encouraged the publication of this symposium, and to Professor Paul F. Maycock, Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Botany, who edited this series of articles.

Though Einstein and other physicists recognized the importance of an observer being at rest in an inertial reference frame for the special theory of relativity, the supporting psychological structures were not discussed much by physicists. On the other hand, Rock wrote of the factors involved in the perception of motion, including one’s own motion. Rock thus came to discuss issues of significance to relativity theory, apparently without any significant understanding of how his theory might be related to relativity theory. In this paper, connections between Rock’s theory on the perception of one’s own motion, as well as empirical work supporting it, and relativity theory are explored.
