Limnological properties of Antarctic ponds during winter freezing

Two shallow ponds at Cape Evans, Ross Island, were sampled at 1–2 week intervals, during winter freezing throughout the winter and during the subsequent melt period, to examine the physical and chemical conditions imposed on the biota during the year. Liquid water was first detected at the base of the ponds in late December. During the main summer melt period conductivities were less than 10 mS cm−1 with maximum daily temperatures around 5°C. The bottom waters became increasingly saline during freezing and water temperatures decreased below 0°C; by June the remaining water overlying the sediments had conductivities >150 mS cm−1 and temperatures of −13°C. Calcium carbonate, then sodium sulphate precipitated out of solution during early freezing. The dominant nitrogen species was dissolved organic-N which reached 12 g m−3 in Pond 1 just prior to final freeze up. The organic and inorganic forms of nitrogen and dissolved reactive phosphorus increased with increasing conductivity in the ponds. The behaviour of particulate-N and particulate-P mirrored that of chlorophyll a with a peak in March-April and a second higher peak just before final freeze-up. This study provides clear evidence that organisms which persist throughout the year in Antarctic coastal ponds must be capable of surviving much more severe osmotic, pH, temperature and redox conditions than those measured during the summer melt. Deoxygenation, pH decline and H2S production, however, point to continued respiratory activity well into the dark winter months.

An attempt is made from oceanographical observations to explain the occurrence of certain bathypelagic species of fish which have been captured in the bottom waters of the southern Strait of Georgia. It is noted that there is a considerable seaward surface Sow of water from the Fraser River. The water from intermediate depths over the continental shelf forms the inflowing deep water of Juan de Fuca Strait mixing with the Fraser River water in the turbulent channels of the San Juan Archipelago. This mixture forms the deep inflowing water of southern Strait of Georgia and the outflowing surface water of the Juan de Fuca Strait as shown by salinity distribution and current measurements. The net inward movement of deep water is suggested as an agent of transport or a directive factor for the occurrence of these fish in this region. Physical and chemical conditions of the deep water in the Strait of Georgia are shown to be only slightly different from those found in the intermediate offshore water. It is probable that a combination of factors provides conditions suitable for survival of these species in the deep water of the southern Strait of Georgia.

In the article, presenting results of geological environment a complex study and status of structural elements of monument. By the research works on building stones of deepened rooms detecting a number of man-made minerals thenardite, gypsum, leveyit, vanthofit, mirabilite. Thenardite plays a leading role among them. It was established that the development of minerals due conducive to technological accumulation of water geological conditions, the specificity of which is occurrence at depth laying the foundations waterproof marl clay and unsatisfactory functioning of drainage and water supply systems, leading to waterlogging soil thickness adjacent to foundation and formation of technogenic aquifer layer. Under favourable physical and chemical conditions from water enriched with ions of sodium, calcium and sulfate taking place a crystallization of containing sodium man-made minerals. To the possibility of their crystallization affects not only, the presence of an aqueous solution of enriched sodium sulphate, and temperature and humidity. Changes of micro-climatic conditions in the basement of the palace closely related to seasonal variations in town climate and microclimate of lodging. During heating season indoor air temperature is quite high and the relative humidity is low. It promotes thenardite crystallization. Instead, in the spring-summer and summer-autumn period relative humidity increased and temperature decreased when salts formed. Active development of technological processes leads to the destruction of mineral building stone in Palace walling constructions and should take actions. Main among these is the placement of vertical waterproofing or drainage ring. Key words: architectural monument, technogenic flooding, technogenic minerals, building stone.

<p>Selection of non-point nutrient pollution management and mitigation options in catchments requires in-depth understanding of both spatial and temporal controlling aspects on nutrient dynamics for covering a diversity of factors controlling nutrient transfer to surface waters. Such an understanding can be obtained by analyzing the hysteresis behaviors and export regime in concentration-discharge (c-Q) relationships from the monitoring stations in smaller streams. <br>A classification scheme developed by Pohle et al. (2019), including nine different c-Q relationships classes were defined as a combination of export behavior (dilution, neutral, enrichment) and rotational pattern of the hysteresis (clock-wise, no rotation, anti-clockwise). To perform this, the export behavior was assessed based on the theoretical c-Q relationships by checking whether concentrations decrease, increase or do not change with discharge (Mann-Kendall test). The rotational pattern was also determined by comparing concentrations at the rising and the falling limb of the hydrograph (Kruskal-Wallis test).<br>The classification has been applied to a 8 years record (2010-2017) of daily discharge and discrete nutrient concentration  data from 88 small streams including forms such as - Nitrate, Organic N, Dissolved Reactive Phosphorus and Particulate P  from Denmark, Sweden and Finland. The streams drains catchments with a size ranging from 0.1 km² – 65 km². Additionally similarity in types of c-Q relationships were investigated by multivariate analysis for N and P forms  considering effects of land use, climate, soil type and the size of the catchments  . <br>The dilution behavior of the catchments might dominantly be related to arable catchments with low groundwater inputs and with a good direct contact from root zone to the stream (e.g. through tile drains for N) and macropore or surface runoff for P. The constant behavior of the catchments might dominantly be related to dominance of groundwater fed streams in arable or natural catchments and the enrichment behavior might dominantly be found in catchments influenced by point source discharges of nutrients.<br>This kind of catchments classification can be used for planning of optimal sampling frequencies in monitoring programs, cost-optimal dosing of mitigation options in catchments and inform about expected inertias in catchment responses to management. </p>

Burullus Lake is Egypt’s second most important coastal lagoon. The present study aimed to shed light on the different types of polluted waters entering the lake from various drains, as well as to evaluate the zooplankton community, determine the physical and chemical characteristics of the waters, and study the eutrophication state based on three years of seasonal monitoring from 2017 to 2019 at 12 stations. The results revealed that Rotifera, Copepoda, Protozoa, and Cladocera dominated the zooplankton population across the three-year study period, with a total of 98 taxa from 59 genera and 10 groups detected in the whole-body lake in 2018 and 2019, compared to 93 species from 52 genera in 2017. Twelve representative surface water samples were collected from the lake to determine physicochemical parameters, i.e., temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, ammonia-N, nitrate–N, nitrate-N, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, dissolved reactive phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a, as well as Fe, Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb ions. Based on the calculations of the water quality index (WQI), the lake was classified as having good water quality. However, the trophic state is ranked as hyper-eutrophic and high trophic conditions.

This study reports measurements of albumin permeability in isolated coronary venules. The isolated microvessel technique allows the quantification of transmural exchange of macromolecules under tightly controlled physical and chemical conditions. Transvenular exchange of albumin was studied in isolated coronary venules during alterations in filtration rate caused by changes in intravascular pressure. The apparent permeability coefficient of albumin (Pa) at an intraluminal pressure of 11 cmH2O was 3.92 +/- 0.43 x 10(-6) cm/s. Elevating intraluminal pressure to 16 and 21 cmH2O increased Pa to 5.13 +/- 0.57 x 10(-6) and 6.78 +/- 0.66 x 10(-6) cm/s, respectively. Calculation of the true diffusive permeability coefficient of albumin (Pd) at zero filtration rate was 1.54 x 10(-6) cm/s. The product of hydraulic conductance (Lp) and (1 - sigma), where sigma is the solute reflection coefficient, was 3.25 x 10(-7) cm.s-1 x cmH2O-1. At a net filtration pressure of 4-5 cmH2O, diffusion accounts for > 60% of total albumin transport across the venular wall. Transmural albumin flux is very sensitive to filtration rate, rising 6.7% for each cmH2O elevation of net filtration pressure. At 11 cmH2O net filtration pressure, convection accounts for nearly 70% of net albumin extravasation from the venular lumen. We suggest that the isolated coronary venule is a suitable preparation for the study of solute exchange in the heart.

Although the habitability of early Mars is now well established, its suitability for conditions favorable to an independent origin of life (OoL) has been less certain. With continued exploration, evidence has mounted for a widespread diversity of physical and chemical conditions on Mars that mimic those variously hypothesized as settings in which life first arose on Earth. Mars has also provided water, energy sources, CHNOPS elements, critical catalytic transition metal elements, as well as B, Mg, Ca, Na and K, all of which are elements associated with life as we know it. With its highly favorable sulfur abundance and land/ocean ratio, early wet Mars remains a prime candidate for its own OoL, in many respects superior to Earth. The relatively well-preserved ancient surface of planet Mars helps inform the range of possible analogous conditions during the now-obliterated history of early Earth. Continued exploration of Mars also contributes to the understanding of the opportunities for settings enabling an OoL on exoplanets. Favoring geochemical sediment samples for eventual return to Earth will enhance assessments of the likelihood of a Martian OoL.

Abstract Poultry litter ash (PLA) is a byproduct of bioenergy production and an effective P source for horticultural crops since it reduces P losses from container production due to its low P solubility. Experiments were conducted to determine effects of rate and placement of PLA on P loss from greenhouse crop production and growth and quality of two commonly-grown greenhouse crops, Verbena canadensis Britton ‘Homestead Purple' and Lantana camara L. ‘New Gold', by comparing two rates (140 and 280 g·m−3 P or 0.4 and 0.8 lb·yd−3) and two application methods (post-plant topdressed and pre-plant incorporated). Leachate-dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) concentrations were reduced by an average of 24% as P rate was reduced from 280 to 140 g·m−3, but were 134% less on average when PLA was topdressed instead of incorporated. Foliar P concentrations were less 33% and 44% for verbena and lantana, respectively when plants were topdressed compared to incorporated. Shoot biomass of verbena and lantana was 9% and 24% greater, respectively, when incorporating instead of topdressing PLA. As a P source, PLA should be pre-plant incorporated within the substrate at a total P rate between 140 g·m−3 (0.4 lb·yd−3) and 280 g·m−3 (0.8 lb·yd−3). Binuangeun Mangrove Ecosystem is located in the south western Java Island, in the area of ​​Lebak Regency, Banten Province. Mangrove ecosystems are ecosystems that located at the Coastal areas which are a habitat for a variety of marine animals which are associated with it, mostly fish, because of its complex or a very effective root structure which can provide a place for fish to be able to live, take shelter, develop, breed and also look for food. This research was conducted to determine the physical and chemical condition and the variety of fishes which found in the Binuangeu, Banten Mangrove Ecosystem. This research method uses literature study. Physical and chemical conditions of the Binuangeun Mangrove Ecosystem, Banten have degrees of temperature ranging from 28.20 - 32.20; acidity range between 7.00 - 8.09; turbidity ranges from 22.50 - 76.00 NTU; water current ranged from 0.079 to 0.189; phosphate content ranges from 0.02 - 0.008; salinity ranges from 30-35 PSU; and dissolved oxygen content ranges from 5.67 - 8.70. The types of fish found in the Binuangeun Mangrove Ecosystem, Banten are 45 species from 22 Family.
