Caregiving burden and gain among adult-child caregivers caring for parents with dementia in China: the partial mediating role of reciprocal filial piety

ABSTRACTBackground:The majority of the family caregivers are adult children in China. The aim of this study was to examine the mediating role of reciprocal filial piety (RFP) between the care recipient's behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and the caregiver's burden or gain among adult-child caregivers caring for parents with dementia in China.Methods:Using Kramer's caregiver adaptation model as the research framework, a cross-sectional survey collected data from 401 adult-child caregivers caring for parents with dementia from hospitals in China.Results:Results of the regression analysis revealed that after adjusting for covariates, the regression coefficient between care recipient's BPSD and caregiver burden reduced fromc= 1.01 toc′ = 0.91 when controlling for RFP. Using the bootstrap approach, the estimated indirect effect through RFP between care recipient's BPSD and caregiver burden was 0.11 (95% CI: 0.03, 0.20). The mediation proportion was 11%. The absolute value of the regression coefficient between care recipient's BPSD and caregiver gain reduced fromc= −0.75 toc′ = −0.63 when controlling for RFP. The bootstrapped estimate of the indirect effect through RFP between care recipient's BPSD and caregiver gain was −0.12 (95% CI: −0.18, −0.07). The mediation proportion was 12%.Conclusions:The findings suggest that the effect of care recipient's BPSD on caregiver's burden/gain may be related to the level of RFP among adult-child caregivers in China.

Background/Aims: When people hone their emotional skills, they become better at manipulating others. They use their emotional skills for coping with the demands of life. This study investigated the mediating role of moral disengagement between emotional manipulation and psychological well-being. Further, the moderating role of age is tested for the mediation model of the study. Methods: This study has a cross-sectional design. Participants included students from private and public institutions (n = 542; Mean age = 18.59 years, SD = 2.10 years; gender = 46% males). Responses were collected on emotional manipulation, moral disengagement, and psychological well-being questionnaires. Analyses were conducted using SPSS 21 and PROCESS 3.1. Results: The correlation analysis showed that both in late adolescents and young adults, moral disengagement negatively correlated with psychological well-being. However, the correlation is much stronger for young adults as compared to late adolescents. Similarly, emotional manipulation has a stronger positive correlation with moral disengagement in young adults compared to late adolescents. Results also showed that moral disengagement and emotional manipulation is higher in males than females, and psychological well-being is higher in females than males. Moral disengagement appeared to be a negative mediator for the relationship between emotional manipulation and psychological well-being. Further, age moderated the indirect effect of emotional manipulation on psychological well-being through moral disengagement. The moderation of age suggests that young adults are more inclined toward moral disengagement behaviors for manipulating emotions in comparison to late adolescents. Conclusions: It is concluded that use of emotional manipulation is associated with a direct increase in psychological well-being; however, indirect emotional manipulation decreases psychological well-being, with an increased use of moral disengagement. Moreover, this indirect effect is stronger in young adults compared to late adolescents, as young adults are more inclined toward moral disengagement.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine how humanitarian organisation size affects inter-organisational coordination and further tested the mediating role of organisational innovativeness, self-organisation in the relationship between humanitarian organisation size and inter-organisational coordination among humanitarian organisations in Uganda.Design/methodology/approachThe study is based on cross-sectional survey; data was collected from 101 humanitarian organisations. The analysis of the proposed hypotheses was done with the help of PLS-SEM using SmartPLS version 3.3.0 for professionals.FindingsThe results show that humanitarian organisation size significantly relates with inter-organisational coordination. In addition, self-organisation and organisational innovativeness play a complementary role between humanitarian organisation size and inter-organisational coordination.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings of this research provide useful insights into the role of humanitarian organisation size in boosting inter-organisational coordination in humanitarian relief delivery. High levels of self-organisation and organisational innovativeness not only improve inter-organisational coordination in humanitarian relief delivery but also enhance the transformation of humanitarian organisation size benefits into inter-organisational coordination.Originality/valueThis research is one of the few studies that investigated the effect of humanitarian organisation size and inter-organisational coordination. It also brings into the limelight the mediating role of self-organisation and organisational innovativeness between humanitarian organisation size and inter-organisational ordination in humanitarian relief delivery.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the effects of colleague and supervisor support on work engagement, examining the mediating role of possibilities for professional development in a healthcare setting.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional survey design was used. A sample of 253 Colombian nurses from a private hospital completed a series of questionnaires.FindingsAccording to the results, support from both colleagues and supervisors influences the work engagement of healthcare personnel. This research provides evidence about how to encourage work engagement in nursing staff through an adequate environment characterized by support and opportunities for career advancement.Research limitations/implicationsIn this study, a cross-sectional design was used; therefore, the generalization is limited, and it is not possible to infer causality.Originality/valueProviding certain conditions can promote not only work engagement with its desirable effects, but it may also mitigate the burden of a complex environment such as healthcare.

This study sought to investigate whether teacher behaviors, within the Teacher Behavior Checklist dimensions of caring and supportive and professional competency and communication skills, relate to students’ satisfaction. Additionally, it assessed the influence of the importance students set on teacher behaviors on students’ satisfaction. Cross-sectional survey data were analyzed using hierarchical linear regression and mediation analysis. Results suggested teacher behaviors within the caring and supportive dimension is the dominant predictor of students’ satisfaction. Behaviors according to professional competency and communication skills were also related to students’ satisfaction but to a lesser degree. Results showed that students’ importance for behaviors did mediate the relationship between teacher behaviors and students’ satisfaction with both caring and supportive and professional competency and communication skills. Theoretical and practical implications for excellent teacher behaviors are discussed including recommendations for future research.

Credit card use has gained popularity throughout the world.  Banks introduce the credit card service as a way of improving their revenue streams. However, in Kenya, the rate of growth in usage has rather been slow. This research surveyed credit card holders in Nairobi, Kenya with a view to investigate the effect of marketing practices on credit usage and whether consumer attitudes had a mediating effect between the two factors.   A cross-sectional survey was conducted by administering a structured questionnaire to 380 respondents. The study established that marketing practices affect credit card usage and that consumer attitudes did not significantly mediate the relationship between marketing practices and credit card usage. This paper makes a valuable contribution to managerial practice by showing how the elements of the extended marketing mix affect credit card usage. Thus it serves to inform the implementation of marketing strategy in banks by guiding on which aspects of marketing should be emphasised so as to increase credit card usage.

Objective: To find out the mediating role of challenge, uncontrollability, and stressfulness in predicting perceived stress from threat during COVID-19 pandemic in the general public. Study Design: Cross-sectional survey. Place and Duration of Study: Bahawalpur City, from Mar to May 2020. Methodology: A total of 360 participants (men=154, women=206) were recruited from different cities of Punjab province. The stress appraisal measure, perceived stress scale, and coping scale were administered through Google forms using social media platforms. The participation in the online survey implied signing the written informed consent available in the survey. Results: The primary and secondary appraisals of challenge (IE=0.84, SE=0.27, 95% LL=0.31, 95% UL=1.40), uncontrollability (IE=1.03, SE=0.36, 95% LL=0.34, 95% UL=1.76), and stressfulness (IE=-0.28, SE=0.12, 95% LL=-0.56, 95% UL=-0.08) fully mediated the relationship between threat of COVID-19 and perceived stress. Additionally, there was statistically significant positive relationship between threat of COVID-19 and use of coping strategies (r=0.14, p<0.01). The statistics of women regarding appraisals of threat, uncontrollability, stressfulness and perceived stress (2.94 ± 0.88); (2.49 ± 0.84); (2.87 ± 0.73); (19.92 ± 6.08), were found to be slightly higher on as compared to men (2.76 ± 0.82); (2.25 ± 0.81); (2.58 ± 0.76); (18.41 ± 5.37) respectively with p=0.01, Cohen’s d=0.21); p=0.001, Cohen’s d=0.29); p=0.001, Cohen’s d=0.38); (p=0.01, Cohen’s d=0.26). Conclusion: The threat of COVID-19 significantly led to the experience of perceived stress through the mediating role of primary and secondary appraisals of challenge, uncontrollability, and stressfulness.

This research aims to examine the relationship between transformational leadership and employees’ creativity through mediating role of trust and job autonomy. The study employed cross sectional survey method for the collection of data from 187 employees working in construction and banking sectors of Pakistan. The findings reveal that transformational leadership fosters employees’ creativity through trust and job autonomy. Both trust and job autonomy have statistically significant mediating effect. However, trust being the mediator, plays a more significant role in boosting up the transformational leadership and employees’ creativity relationship as compared to job autonomy. This research helps to know how transformational leadership enhances employees’ creativity by enlightening the mediating role of trust and job autonomy. Further, the findings of this research also help the managers to understand and create such environment which enhances employees’ creativity by focusing on the factors identified in this study. This research contributes to advance the literature on the mediating role of trust and job autonomy in describing the relationship of transformational leader and employee’s creativity and highlighting that trust plays a more important role to enhance creativity in contrast to job autonomy. Further, this is the first attempt to enhance the employee creativity through transformational leadership style and the mediating role of both trust and job autonomy in Pakistan.

Background: The increased tasks and responsibilities involved in supporting a parent with dementia (PWD) can induce distress in adult-child caregivers. Previous studies have shown that distress can be influenced by PWD and caregiver determinants, but few studies have considered the associations between these variables. Objective: This study tested a complex model of adult-child caregiver distress in which PWD and caregiver determinants and their associations are considered. Methods: 159 adult-child caregivers participated in this online study. PWD and caregiver determinants were assessed using questionnaires and their associations were investigated using the partial least squares path method. Results: The model showed a significant partial mediation through self-efficacy (confidence in one’s ability to organize and manage caregiving situations) between poor self-rated health and distress. Self-efficacy was a significant mediator of the relationship between informal social support and distress, and between preparedness and distress. The direct path between parental overprotection and distress was significant. The association between care and distress was significantly stronger for adult-child caregivers not living with their PWD. Conclusion: The model revealed the important mediating role of self-efficacy. Clinical interventions should improve the preparedness of adult-child caregivers and the quality of social support. The positive perception of their self-rated health may thus be promoted.
