A previous study (Syed and Leaver, 1999) showed that offering maize and grass silages alternately either within days or between days resulted in higher intakes of maize than grass silage, and lower total intakes than when fed mixed together. The factors influencing the choice of forages are not well researched. The hypothesis tested was that as maize and grass silages are similar in ME value but very different in crude protein, nutrient demand for protein, and protein level in the supplement would influence forage selection. This experiment examined the influence of the milk yield level of the cow and the protein level of a supplement.

Previous studies at this Institute have shown a marked interaction between level of supplementary feeding and protein content in the supplement with dairy cows offered high quality grass silage-based diets. For example, a given milk yield or yield of milk constituents can be obtained by offering supplements of high crude protein (CP) content, eg 340 g CP/kg fresh weight, at much lower levels than would be required with conventional supplements with a CP content of 180 g/kg fresh weight. The aim of the present study was to quantify if. the interrelationships established with high digestibility silages also applied with lower digestibility silage.The experiment was carried out with 60 autumn-calving British Friesian dairy cows. Twenty eight animals were offered early cut silage (E), harvested between 17-19 May, with the remaining thirty two animals offered late cut silage (L) harvested between 2-12 June. Both E and L silages were produced from the same swards and in both cases grass was direct harvested and treated with an inoculant of Lactobacillus plantarum, at the rate of 3.0 litres/t fresh herbage.

The nutrient demand of dairy cattle varies with milk yield level and is greater in early than in later lactation. This is likely to influence forage feeding behaviour and intake, although the mechanisms are not well understood. The objectives of this experiment were to examine the feeding behaviour of dairy cows in early and late lactation (representing two levels of nutrient demand), and at three levels of concentrate supplement (representing three dietary influences on demand for forage).

We conducted a study of the processes associated to NH3 emission in naturally ventilated dairy cattle facilities, having described factors that regulate NH3 emission, as well as methodologies for measuring these emissions at these facilities. Appropriate techniques to mitigate NH3 emission in facilities located in regions with warm climates were also identified. The most effective mitigation techniques with simple implementation include strategies associated to: (i) installation design and flooring, which lead to reduced emissions, (ii) excreta pre-excretion, namely the use of diets with optimized crude protein content and increased milk production at farm level; and (iii) excreta post-excretion, particularly by changing the conditions of environmental monitoring within the premises, practice introduction or additive application in the management of excreta deposited on floors.

A 3-year experiment was conducted at Kairi Research Station on the Atherton Tablelands, Queensland, to determine the effects of stocking rate and applied nitrogen fertilizer on the pasture yield and composition, diet selection by cows, and soil fertility of Gatton panic (Panicum maximum cv. Gatton) pastures. Thirty-two Friesian cows were used in a 4x2 factorial design: four stocking rates (2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 cows/ha), each at two rates of fertilizer application 200 and 400 kg N/ha.year. The higher rate of fertilization increased the pasture green dry matter on offer at all samplings (P < 0.01); the increase ranged from 1 106 kg/ha in summer to 548 kg/ha in spring. Green dry matter decreased ( P< 0.0 1) with increasing stocking rate, with mean yields of 3736 and 2384 kg/ha at 2.0 and 3.5 cows/ha, respectively. Weed yields increased over the 3 years at the higher stocking rates for pastures receiving 200 kg N/ha.year. The crude protein content of leaf and stem increased with increasing stocking rate and amount of applied nitrogen fertilizer. Values ranged from 12.1 to 26.5% of dry matter (DM) in leaf and from 3.7 to 13.8% DM in stem. In leaf, sodium concentration (range 0.05-0.20% DM) was increased, while phosphorus concentration (range 0.21-0.44% DM) was decreased by the higher rate of fertilizer application. Plant sodium and phosphorus levels were inadequate for high levels of milk production. Dietary leaf content and crude protein contents were consistently increased by both a reduced stocking rate, and the higher rate of fertilization. Cows were able to select for leaf and at the lowest stocking rate, leaf in the diet averaged 38%; while the leaf content of the pasture was 20%. Dietary leaf content ranged from 38 to 57% in summer and from 11 to 36% in winter. Dietary crude protein ranged from 13 to 15% in summer and from 7 to 11% in winter and was positively correlated with pasture crude protein content and dietary leaf percentage. Soil pH decreased (P<0.05) from an overall mean of 6.3 in 1976 to 6.1 at 200 N and 5.8 at 400 N in 1979. Soil phosphorus status remained stable, while calcium and magnesium levels were lower (P<0.01) after 3 years.

The aim was to estimate the influence of genetic merit (£PIN95) and level of concentrate feeding (Cgrp) on predicted total dry matter intake (tDMI) of individual cows, using records collected from commercial farms. The method described by Wicks & Leaver (2000) was used to estimate individual daily dry matter intakes from seven farms, totalling 4282 monthly records over a two-year period. The method was based on milk production records supplemented by body condition scores and height at withers, which were used to calculated the ME requirements of individual animals. All the records were collected, from autumn and winter (July to March) calving cows during the housed period (August to March).

Low-glucosinolate rapeseed meal (<20 μmol/g) is likely to replace the high-glucosinolate meal currently produced in the UK, and in this experiment the use of low-glucosinolate rapeseed meal (RSM) as the sole protein supplement in a compound feed for milk production in cows was assessed. There were three compound concentrate feeds of similar energy and protein content, 0% RSM (group A), 15% RSM (B) and 30% RSM (C). The additional protein in diets A and B was provided as soyabean meal (SBM).Eighteen Friesian cows were divided into three groups, balanced with regard to previous yield and number of lactations, and three weeks after calving were given one of the compound feeds in a 3x3 changeover experiment; each of the three feeding periods was four weeks. Barley meal was given as a parlour feed, 1 kg air dry at each milking, and the compound concentrate and grass silage were given at Broadbent-Calan gates in quantities related to expected milk yield.

Breeding goals differ for different breeds of dairy cattle. For example the breeding programmes for Holstein-Friesian (HF) animals have been based primarily on improved milk production with little emphasis on functional traits such as fertility. In contrast, Norwegian (NC) dairy cattle have been bred using a multi-trait selection procedure for 25 years. These differences in selection procedures for the two breeds may have major effects on overall herd output and profitability with the forage-based systems of milk production employed in Northern Ireland. The objective of the present paper is to present the effects of two levels of nutrient input on food intake and utilisation, and animal performance of the two breeds, with diets based on grass silage during the first and second lactation.

Two trials were carried out to examine the effects of crude protein level in rations for intensively-finished suckled bulls. In 1987/88 (Year 1) high levels were tested as a possible means of delaying finishing and in 1988/89 (Year 2) low levels were tested.In both years 54 Charolais x (Hereford x Friesian) bulls born in May-June were weaned in November, following paddock-grazing of cows and calves on permanent grassland. Following weaning, the bulls were housed in straw-bedded yards and offered wilted grass silage, with concentrate feed gradually increased. After 14 days the silage was removed and concentrates offered ad libitum. The bulls were allocated to 1 of 3 treatments with 2 replicates per treatment to provide 6 groups of 9 bulls. The experimental diets consisted of rolled barley with a pelleted protein concentrate and extra mineral supplement when appropriate, as described in Table 1. This resulted in diets with a range of protein but similar major mineral contents.
