The aim was to estimate the influence of genetic merit (£PIN95) and level of concentrate feeding (Cgrp) on predicted total dry matter intake (tDMI) of individual cows, using records collected from commercial farms. The method described by Wicks & Leaver (2000) was used to estimate individual daily dry matter intakes from seven farms, totalling 4282 monthly records over a two-year period. The method was based on milk production records supplemented by body condition scores and height at withers, which were used to calculated the ME requirements of individual animals. All the records were collected, from autumn and winter (July to March) calving cows during the housed period (August to March).

Nutritional research on commercial farms is difficult to carry out due to the problems associated with measuring individual animal dry matter intake (DMI). This research was aimed at developing a satisfactory method of estimating DMI from routine farm records, supplemented by cow body condition score and height at withers of the cow.

The effect of hay supplementation on the performance of dairy cows on a restricted intake of paspalum-dominant perennial pasture was studied in two 21 -day periods in the eighth and ninth months of lactation. In each period, there were three groups fed pasture only at mean intakes of 15.2, 11.5 and 7.3 kg/cow day-1, two groups fed at similar pasture restriction levels and supplemented with hay ad libitum, and one further group fed an average of 7.3 kg of pasture supplemented with only 4.3 kg of hay. The data were analyzed by regression, using total dry matter intake as the dependent variable, and pseudovariables were used to examine the effects of hay feeding. The relations between total dry matter intake and milk, butterfat, protein and solids-not-fat production, and change in body condition of dairy cows were not altered by ration composition. Milk production declined linearly by 0.66 kg and 0.31 kg/cow day-1 in the eight and ninth months of lactation, respectively, for each kg reduction in total dry matter intake. Similar responses were obtained for butterfat, protein and solids-not-fat production. Gain in body condition of the cows also decreased as total intake fell, but the relation was curvilinear and not affected by stage of lactation. It was concluded that high quality hay can be used to overcome shortages of paspalum-dominant perennial pasture in autumn, and that it has similar. nutritive value to pasture in terms of milk production and body condition.

Moisture content, hay supplementation and energy content of corn silages were studied as factors affecting dry matter (DM) intake and utilization by lactating cows. In experiment I, a two-week delay in date of harvest resulted in an increase in DM content of silage for the two varieties of corn, but this was associated with significantly greater (P < 005) DM intake and fat-corrected milk production for only the earlier-maturing variety (Pride 5). Harvest date had no influence on solids-not-fat (SNF) content of the milk or body weight, but silage from Pride 5 corn resulted in a significantly (P < 0.05) higher SNF content and greater loss in body weight. In experiment II, feeding 4.7 kg of hay per day significantly reduced (P < 0.05) silage dry-matter intake and increased total ration dry-matter intake but did not change milk production or composition when compared with feeding 2.3 kg of hay per day. In experiment III, ear silage, stalk and leaf silage and hay were compared as a source of roughage for lactating cows. Total ration dry-matter intake was significantly greater (P < 0.05) for hay fed alone, but milk production was apparently higher when the ear silage was fed.

Data were collected during three visits to each of 19 dairy herds in the Guelph area. Feed intake, body condition and heart girth of all milking cows were recorded during each visit. Samples of all feeds were taken and analyzed for dry matter and acid detergent fibre. Cow weight was estimated from heart girth after grouping cows according to body condition. Milk production and fat test data were obtained from DHI records. Four regression equations were used to predict total feed dry matter intake. The mean daily feed intake was 2.8% of body weight. Eleven of the herds were within ± 10% of this value, four were above this range and four were below. The number of herds in which mean predicted intake was within ± 10% of observed intake, above this range or below this range, were (1) 7, 5, 7 (2) 12, 2, 5 (3) 11, 2, 6 (4) 8, 9, 2 for the four equations, respectively. Equations 2 and 3 were more accurate in predicting mean dry matter intake than Eq. 1 or 4.

ABSTRACT Feed shortage during the dry season in the highlands of Madagascar negatively impacts the dairy cattle productivity, as well as the farmers’ income. Bamboo can produce a high quantity of biomass and could be an alternative way to increase the fodder supply for cattle. The present study aimed to assess the compositional information and the optimal rate of bamboo as fodder for dairy cattle. Leaf samples from nine bamboo species were collected to determine their chemical composition and nutritive value. A feeding experiment was also conducted using ten dairy cows, over ten weeks. Bamboo leaves were mixed with maize silage in five proportions: SIL0:BAM100, SIL25:BAM75, SIL50:BAM50, SIL75:BAM25 and SIL100:BAM0. The contents of dry matter, total ash and crude protein in the bamboo leaves were, respectively, 44.5-64.6 %, 6.68-18.5 % and 7.71-15.4 %. In the feeding trial, the dry matter intake of bamboo leaves was 1.6-7.1 kg per day, with an average of 4.8 kg per day. The dry matter apparent digestibility of bamboo leaves was 37.4-56.4 %. The milk production reached 13.6-14.4 L per cow, per day, but there was no significant difference concerning the rate of bamboo leaves in the mixed diet (p > 0.05). The introduction of bamboo leaves into the ruminants diet did not affect their milk production.

<p>A study was addressed to evaluate the effect of rearing management improvement particularly for feed and housing management on milk production of dairy cattle. The investigation was performed at Kembang Village, Ampel Sub-District of Boyolali District, a location for Prima Tani implementation, involved the participation of 8 people of farmer group members. A group of four cattle fed the traditional diet, whereas the remaining four were offered the introduced diet containing elephant grass + commercial concentrate + cassava tuber. Measurements were made for feed intake, milk production, and milk density. Results showed that milk production of dairy cattle under the improved management was higher (P&lt;0.05) than that under the traditional one (7.08+ 0.31 versus 4.59 + 0.39 l/head/d). It was determined that the average of dry matter intake of the cattle under the traditional rearing management was 7.79 + 0.61 kg/head/d, while the cattle received the introduced diet consumed 8.29 + 0.61 kg dry matter/head/d. However, the average milk density of the cattle under the traditional rearing management (1.0253) was similar to that of cattle under the improved management (1.0271). The conclusion was that improvement of rearing management increased the amount of milk produced by dairy cattle.</p>
