First record of Scrippsiella trochoidea (Dinophyceae) in Shatt Al-Arab River (Southern Iraq)

Even though very few biological data on dinoflagellates from Iraqi aquatic ecosystems are available to date, there are none on the genusScrippsiella. For this reason, the survey was conducted along four sites in the Shatt Al-Arab River between November 2009 and July 2010. A dense population ofScrippsiella-like dinoflagellate was observed in the studied samples during November and December 2009. Less dense population of the same taxon was encountered in the downstream sites in July 2010. Based on observations of thecal plate pattern in epifluorescence microscopy, the species was attributed toScrippsiella trochoidea. The occurrence ofS. trochoideais reported for the first time in Iraqi waters from a wide range of temperature (17.9°C–35.2°C) and salinity (2.3–16.7).

Annelid worms represent a significant part of freshwater benthic communities worldwide and Oligochaeta is a particularly species-rich group. Dero (A) bimagnasetus (Naididae) previously found and described from a small marsh in Surinam in 1974, has now been found for the first time in Barra Lake, MG, Brazil. Due to the scarce biological data and absence of ecological information in the literature regarding this species we are presenting morphological information on the specimens obtained and the physical and chemical characteristics of the habitat they were found. This species occurred only in the littoral zone of Barra Lake, in muddy, low oxygen, low conductivity and low organic matter sediment. The four individuals collected ranged 3.17-4.15 mm total length; 0.25 - 0.26 mm body width and 0.16-0.21 mm3 total volume. Considering the present anthropic pressures on freshwater biota and fast biodiversity losses worldwide it is now recognized that attention must be paid to low abundance species and the urgency for preservation of their habitats.

Hydroptilidae is one of the most diverse families of the order Trichoptera in the world. Neotropical fauna has 36 genera. In Colombia, 14 have been reported in the larval stage and 11 in the adultstage. In the present study, a Byrsopteryx larva is registered for the first time in Colombia. The larvawas found in the Orotoy River (919 MASL), a stream from the foothills of the eastern flank of the country’s Eastern Cordillera (Orinoquia) characterized as waterfall current with riffle on rocks and pebbles, preserved riparian vegetation with open canopy, and clay-loam soil. The water temperature was 19.7 ºC, pH 5.8, conductivity 15.6 uS/cm, and dissolved oxygen 9.1-9.7 mg/lO2. Given the high diversity of aquatic ecosystems and the limited knowledge of Hydroptilidae genera in Colombia, we hope to open the way for new research and discovery of more species in the country.

The largest genus of the family Sarcophagidae (Insecta, Diptera), Sarcophaga Meigen (sensu lato), has ~160 subgenera; however, the validity and phylogenetic relationships of these are still unclear, impeding progress in evolutionary studies. This study presents a phylogenetic hypothesis for selected subgenera of Sarcophaga s.l. based on COI sequences (685 bp) for 87 species representing 27 valid subgenera. The subgenera Stackelbergeola Rohdendorf and Rohdendorfisca Grunin are reconsidered in the light of new molecular, morphological and biological data. The female is described for the first time for a representative of both subgenera, and Sarcophaga (Rohdendorfisca) flagellifera (Grunin) is shown to be a parasitoid of tettigoniid grasshoppers. As the male of Sarcophaga (Stackelbergeola) sushkini (Rohdendorf) is insufficiently documented in the literature, a redescription is provided based on material from Xinjiang, thereby providing the first record of this subgenus and species from China. Detailed documentation through photographs, scanning electron microscopy and illustrations of the adult morphology is also provided. The subgenera Stackelbergeola and Rohdendorfisca are shown to be monophyletic, together forming a monophylum supported by molecular and morphological data, and they are placed in a wider phylogenetic context of the megadiverse genus Sarcophaga s.l.

Tineobius (Tineobius) tamaricis Ribes & Fusu sp. nov. is newly described from Parapodia sinaica (Frauenfeld, 1859) (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) galls from Catalonia in Spain. This is the first record of the so far Palaeotropical genus Tineobius Ashmead, 1896 in the Palaearctic region. Basic biological data and a DNA barcode are provided for the new species. Parapodia sinaica (the host of T. tamaricis sp. nov.) is reported for the first time to form galls on Tamarix canariensis (Willd). A checklist of described world Tineobius species is provided, with nine species formally transferred to Tineobius from Anastatoidea Gahan, 1927 and thirteen species newly assigned to T. (Tineobius). Metapelma seyrigi (Risbec, 1952) is transferred to Tineobius and the replacement name Tineobius (Tineobius) madagascariensis nom. nov. is proposed, as the name is preoccupied by Tineobius (Tineobius) seyrigi (Ferrière, 1938) comb. nov.; Tineobius (Tineobius) albopalpalis (Brues, 1907) comb. nov. is transferred from Charitopus Förster, 1856 (a genus in Encyrtidae). One species is transferred from Anastatoidea to Eupelmus Dalman, 1820 as Eupelmus (Episolindelia) ambatomangae (Risbec, 1958) comb. nov.

The dagger nematodes, Xiphinema spp., are migratory root-ectoparasitic nematodes that cause damage to a wide range of wild and cultivated plants over the world. In Vietnam, this nematode group has been studied mainly based on morphological characterizations. During a survey of pathogens associated with tea, a plant with many medicinal and therapeutic potentials, a population of Xiphinema hunaniense was recorded. This study provides the first morphological and molecular characterizations of Xiphinema hunaniense found on Tea in Vietnam. The 28S rDNA, and 18S rDNA phylogenetic trees of the genus Xiphinema are also provided. 18S rDNA sequence of X. hunaniense is also submitted to GenBank for the first time.

Caenis rivulorum Eaton, 1884 is widely distributed and has been reported from a wide range in the Palearctic Region. We report this species from Japan for the first time, from five localities of Hokkaido, based on morphology and molecular data.

Nuclear 18S rRNA gene sequences of oyster shell borers, Polydora websteri, P. calcarea and P. haswelli (Polychaeta: Spionidae), were determined for the first time. A wide range of morphological variation, particularly with regard to pigmentation, is observed among these three species. This variation was characterized at the species level. Black pigmentation pattern on the palps is suggested to be a key characteristic for species determination. Polydora websteri and P. haswelli were sister species. This is the first record of P. calcarea from Japan and Australia and P. haswelli from Japan.

A Helorid wasp, Helorus ruficornis Förster, 1856, is reported for the first time on Tahiti (Society Islands), which is also the first record of both Proctotrupoidea and family Heloridae in French Polynesia. The potential hosts of Helorus ruficornis in French Polynesia are discussed.

Extensive survey of mantids in the northeastern Uttar Pradesh was conducted. Two mantid species were recorded for the first time from the target area, viz.: Pyrgomantis pallida, 1917 and Bactromantis mexicana.

   The Ciliophoran Trichodina magna Van As and Basson, 1989 is recorded for the first time in in Iraq from gills of the blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus (Steindachner, 1864) Iraq from Al-Graiat location on the Tigris River at Baghdad city. The description and measurements of this external parasite as well as its illustrations are given.
