Asymmetric slits loaded irregular shaped microstrip patch antenna with three different ground structures is proposed. All three antennas show triple band characteristics. First antenna with regular ground plane resonates at 1.95, 2.4, and 4.90 GHz with good radiation characteristics and shows right-hand circular polarization at 1.95 GHz. 18.75% of compactness is achieved with triple band characteristics. Further, same patch is used with different defected ground structures. Second antenna resonates at 1.85, 2.4, and 4.85 GHz with suppressed cross-polarization level and antenna shows right-hand circular polarization at 1.85 and 4.85 GHz. Compactness is further improved to the value of 22.91%. The third antenna resonates at 1.95, 2.4, and 4.85 GHz with better gain and radiation characteristics and antenna shows right-hand circular polarization at 1.95 and 2.4 GHz. The small frequency ratio f2/f1 is achieved and the value of f2/f1 is 1.29 and 1.23 for second and third configuration, respectively. Proposed structures show right-hand circularly polarized with suppressed left-hand circularly polarized radiations and suitable for fixed mobile wireless communication applications. All structures are analyzed using Ansoft HFSS v.14 based on finite element method and measured results satisfy the simulated results.

The article presents the methodology for designing and optimizing of feed network for a circularly polarized horn antenna. A horn antenna has a metal structure and consists of a waveguide that has a variable cross-section and an open radiating end. Electromagnetic waves in such antenna are excited by a waveguide that is connected to a horn antenna in through the narrow wall. The proposed feed network of the horn antenna consists of a rectangular waveguide with a slot. In order to obtain the excitation of signals with circular polarization at the output, a slot was cut in the waveguide at an angle of 45º. As a result, the network makes it possible to form the signals with right-hand circular polarization and left-hand circular polarization. The presented design of the horn antenna feed network eliminates the need to develop a separate waveguide device of polarization processing. The designed feed network of the circularly polarized horn antenna can be used at an operating frequency of 8.0 GHz. At these frequency the reflection coefficient is less than −19 dB. The proposed horn antenna provides a maximum gain of 21 dB for right-hand circular polarization and a maximum gain of 10 dB for left-hand circular polarization. Cross-polarization isolation is higher than 10 dB. Therefore, the developed feed network of the horn antenna provides narrowband operating mode at the circular polarization with satisfying electromagnetic polarization characteristics and matching at the frequency of 8 GHz. Developed feed network of the horn antenna with circular polarization can be used in radio engineering systems, which carry out polarization processing of signals.

A circularly polarized microstrip antenna for bi-static SAR onboard UAV has been investigated. The both senseof the circular polarization left-hand circularly polarized (LHCP) and right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) arecan be achieved on experimental and simulation. The 2x2 sub array antenna operated in 1.176 (L-band) withnovel proximity synchronous feed method has been designed, fabricated, and evaluated to show the characteristic of the antenna. The measured result give the axial ratio bandwidth (<3dB) of about 28 MHz (2%), whichconsistent with the simulated result of about 27 MHz (2%). These results satisfy the specification for our BiSARsystem installed onboard UAV.

In this paper, a simple design for a triple-band circularly polarized (CP) antenna with the capability of switching its polarization between dual-sense CPs is presented. The proposed antenna is comprised of a monopole loop antenna as a primary radiator. By placing a parasitic loop around the primary radiator, an additional CP band is achieved. Reconfigurability of the polarization between right-hand CP (RHCP) and left-hand CP (LHCP) at three different frequencies of 2.5, 3.3, and 3.8 GHz was realized by controlling the ON/OFF states of two PIN diodes. For validation, the fabricated antenna yielded an impedance bandwidth of 52.6% (2.34–4.01 GHz), while the axial ratio bandwidths for both the RHCP and LHCP states were 3.5% (2.47–2.56 GHz), 6.6% (3.20–3.42 GHz), and 2.4% (3.74–3.83 GHz). The measured broadside gains within the axial ratio bandwidth were 1.2, 2.7, and 1.4 dBi, respectively. Compared to other reconfigurable multi-band CP antennas, the proposed design is the first work to achieve a reconfigurable polarization at three distinct bands at a low fabrication cost by using only two diodes. The proposed antenna is suitable for WLAN and WiMAX applications.

Abstract In this paper, a ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter with stopband characteristics is presented using a multi-mode resonator (MMR) technique. An MMR is formed by loading three dumbbell-shaped (Mickey and circular) shunt stubs placed in the center and two symmetrical locations from ports, respectively. Three circular and arrowhead defected ground structures on the ground plane are introduced to achieve UWB bandwidth with a better roll-off rate. The proposed filter exhibits stopband characteristics from 10.8 to 20 GHz with a 0.4 dB return loss. The group delay and roll-off rate of the designed filter are <0.30 ns in the passband and 16 dB/GHz at lower and higher cut-off frequencies, respectively. The dimension of the filter is 0.74λg × 0.67λg mm2 and was fabricated on a cost-effective substrate. All simulated results are verified through the experimental results.

This paper presents an original solution to design a compact dual circularly polarized isoflux antenna for nanosatellite applications. This kind of antenna has been previously designed in our laboratory, for a single circular polarization. This antenna is composed of a dual circularly polarized feed and a choke horn antenna. This feed is a cross-shaped slot in the ground plane, which provides coupling between a patch and a ring microstrip line with two ports. It is located at the center of a choke horn antenna. The simulated antenna presents an axial ratio <3 dB and a realized gain close to 0 dB over a 400 MHz bandwidth (8.0–8.4 GHz) at the limit of coverage, i.e. 65° whatever the azimuth angle (φ) and the port. A 20 dB matching for each port and 13 dB isolation characteristics between the two ports have been achieved on this bandwidth. It has been realized and successfully measured.

Abstract A novel dual-band rectangular slot antenna is presented for dual-sense reconfigurable polarization. A W-shaped microstrip feedline and two rectangular parasitic patches are used to obtain dual-band circular polarization. Further, the feedline is modified so that the senses of polarization at the two bands are opposite. By introducing PIN-diodes in the feed lines, polarization can be switched among left-hand circular polarization (LHCP), right-hand circular polarization (RHCP), and linear polarization (LP). A prototype dual-band dual-sense antenna with f01 = 1.9 GHz and f02 = 3.45 GHz is fabricated in a 1.6 mm thick FR4 substrate. The measured circular polarized bandwidths are more than 7.6 % for the lower band and 5 % for the upper band.

Abstract Design of single-feed circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antenna is proposed in this article. The design employs the concept of E-shape patch with inclined fractal defected ground structure (IFDGS), which can improve the impedance bandwidth, gain, and axial ratio (AR) bandwidth. The excellent enhanced impedance bandwidth, axial ratio bandwidth, and gain are achieved by an inclined E-shaped fractal etched on the ground plane. The parameter studies of the E-shaped IFDGS are given to illustrate the way to obtain CP radiation. The third iterative IFDGS is fabricated on easily available FR4 substrate with a size of 0.494 λ0 × 0.494 λ0 × 0.019 λ0 (λ0 is the wavelength in free space at 3.624 GHz). The measured results verify the simulated results and show good agreement. The proposed antenna shows an impedance bandwidth of 12.7% at a centre frequency of 3.47 GHz and 3-dB AR bandwidth for this band is 2.39% at a centre frequency of 3.626 GHz. The measured peak gain for the proposed antenna is found as 8.1 dBi. The proposed antenna can be suitable for mobile WIMAX operation (IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard), wireless communication in CA-band and FCC.
