In this paper, a frequency reconfigurable microstrip slot antenna for ultra-wideband applications with switchable band-notch functions is designed and manufactured. To generate a wide usable fractional bandwidth of 3 to over 13.6 GHz, square patch transforms to a fork-shaped patch, also two triangular-shaped strips have been added at above sections of rectangular slot on the ground plane. Band rejections are obtained by adding two inverted L-shaped strips in the fork-shaped patch and one L-shaped defected ground structure. Moreover, by implementation of two PIN diodes within the antenna structure, four switchable frequency responses are achieved. The designed antenna has simple structure and a small size of 20 × 20 × 0.8 mm3 while providing band rejection characteristics at WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks) systems.

In this paper, the design, simulation, and fabrication of a novel printed rectangular slot antenna with a band-notched function suitable for 2.4 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) and ultra-wideband (UWB) applications is presented and investigated. Two pairs of slits are introduced into the ground plane to realize band-notched function, by tuning the position, length, and width of which a suitable rejected frequency band can be obtained. To improve the impedance matching, a rectangular cut is also made in the ground plane so that the antenna can cover 2–12 GHz frequency range. According to the measured results, the proposed antenna has a large bandwidth totally satisfying the requirement of 2.4 GHz WLAN and UWB systems, while providing the required band-notch function from 5.1 to 5.9 GHz. The study of transfer function and time-domain characteristics also indicates the band-notched function of the antenna. The radiation patterns display nearly omni-directional performance and the antenna gain is stable except in the rejected frequency band (5.1–5.9 GHz). Moreover, group delays are within 1.5 ns except for the notch band. These features make it a promising candidate for UWB wireless applications. Details of this antenna are described, and the experimental results of the constructed prototype are given.

A compact and simple ultra-wideband microstrip-fed planar antenna with double bandstop characteristic is presented. The antenna consists of a rectangular monopole and two W-shaped slots inserted into the radiating patch and the truncated ground plane. By using a W-shaped slot defected ground structure (DGS) in the feedline, a stopband of 800 MHz (from 5.1 to 5.9 GHz) for band rejection of wireless local area network (WLAN) is achieved. To obtain the other stopband (from 3.7-4.4 GHz), a same shaped slot is etched into the monopole. Moreover, the two stopbands can be controlled by adjusting the length of the slot respectively. The simulation results show that the designed antenna, with a compact size of 38.5 mm×42.5 mm, has an impedance bandwidth of 2.811 GHz for voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) less than 2, besides two frequency stopbands of 3.74.4 GHz and 5.15.9 GHz. Moreover, the main features including omnidirectional H-plane radiation patterns and the appropriate impedance characteristic are achieved by beveling the radiating patch and the microstrip-fed line of the proposed antenna.

<p>This paper presents the bandwidth enhancement of a Proximity Coupled Feed Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna using a new Defected Ground Structure - an ‘inverted SHA’ shaped slot on the ground plane of the proximity coupled feed rectangular Microstrip patch antenna. The parameters such as Bandwidth, Return loss, VSWR and Radiation efficiency are improved in the proposed antenna than simple proximity coupled feed rectangular Microstrip patch antenna without Defected Ground Structure. A comparison is also shown for the proposed Microstrip patch antenna with the antenna structure without Defected Ground Structure. The proposed antenna resonates in S-band at frequency of 2.4 GHz with bandwidth of 180 MHz. A very good return loss of -47.9223 dB is obtained for the Microstrip patch antenna with an ’inverted SHA’ shaped Defected Ground Structure. Implementing an ‘inverted SHA’ shaped defect in the ground plane of the proximity coupled feed rectangular Microstrip patch antenna results in 5.3% improvement in bandwidth with 16.01% reduction in the overall area of the ground plane as compared to the Microstrip patch antenna without Defected Ground Structure.</p>

A coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed circular-shaped fractal antenna with third iterative orthogonal elliptical slot for ultra-wideband applications is presented. The bandwidth is enhanced by using successive iterations of radiating patch, CPW feedline, and tapered ground plane. An impedance bandwidth of 2.9–20.6 GHz is achieved. The designed antenna has omnidirectional radiation patterns along with average peak realized gain of 3.5 dB over the entire frequency range of operation. A good agreement is observed between the simulated and experimental results. This antenna structure has the advantages of miniaturized size and wide bandwidth in comparison to previously reported fractal structures.

A miniaturized high-gain (MHG) ultra-wideband (UWB) unidirectional monopole antenna with defected ground structure (DGS) is designed for ultra-wideband applications. The MHG antenna is printed on the FR4 substrate material with an overall size of 26.6-mm [Formula: see text] 29.3-mm [Formula: see text] 1.6-mm, which operates over the UWB frequency range and achieves the bandwidth between 3.1[Formula: see text]GHz and 10.6[Formula: see text]GHz. This high-gain unidirectional antenna exhibits a peak gain of 7.20[Formula: see text]dB with an efficiency of 95%. The compact antenna is a simple overlay design of circular and rectangular patches with the partial ground plane exhibiting high gain and better directivity. The overlay patch antenna acts as the radiator for wider bandwidth compared to the fundamental design of patch antenna and is matched to an SMA connector via 50[Formula: see text][Formula: see text] microstrip feed line. These simulated results are presented using HFSS software package. The designed antennas are fabricated and validated by using Agilent Vector Analyzer.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas with four and eight elements having connected grounds are designed for ultra-wideband applications. Careful optimization of the lines connecting the grounds leads to reduced mutual coupling amongst the radiating patches. The proposed antenna has a modified substrate geometry and comprises a circular arc-shaped conductive element on the top with the modified ground plane geometry. Polarization diversity and isolation are achieved by replicating the elements orthogonally forming a plus shape antenna structure. The modified ground plane consists of an inverted L strip and semi ellipse slot over the partial ground that helps the antenna in achieving effective wide bandwidth spanning from (117.91%) 2.84–11 GHz. Both 4/8-port antenna achieves a size of 0.61 λ × 0.61 λ mm2 (lowest frequency) where 4-port antenna is printed on FR4 substrate. The 4-port UWB MIMO antenna attains wide impedance bandwidth, Omni-directional pattern, isolation >15 dB, ECC < 0.015, and average gain >4.5 dB making the MIMO antenna suitable for portable UWB applications. Four element antenna structure is further extended to 8-element configuration with the connected ground where the decent value of IBW, isolation, and ECC is achieved.

AbstractA compact microwave lowpass filter based on defected ground structure (DGS), consisting of Yagi slot DGS resonators etched on the metallic ground plane of a microstrip line, is studied in this paper. The proposed lowpass filter was analyzed by parameter sweeping and optimal parameters were selected to design a prototype demonstrator filter. Measurements show the developed lowpass filter exhibits a 3dB cuto frequency of 3.07 GHz with a sharp transition between the passband and the stopband, low insertion loss of less than 0.6 dB in the passband and an in-band group delay of 0.4 ns. Moreover, an ultra-wide suppression band from 3.68 to over 20 GHz with a suppression level generally better than 20 dB is also observed from measurements.

Abstract This article presents a structure of coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed star-shaped monopole antenna (SSMA) with a pair of quarter-circular-slit (QCS) and partly-hexagonal-ring-slit (PHRS) defected ground structure. By inserting a pair of QCS and PHRS on the rectangular ground plane, an excellent impedance bandwidth is achieved i.e., 139 % (from 2.2--12.21 GHz). The dimension of the SSMA is about 0.286λ l ×0.216λ l mm 2 , where λ l is the wavelength in free space at the lowest operating frequency i.e, 2.2 GHz. The transmission line model (TLM) of the SSMA is presented and it shows the antenna behavior based on the effect of each element. It is observed that the characteristics of the TLM model are close to the simulation result using the CST simulator. From the results, it is observed that the proposed ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna close to omnidirectional radiation patterns and suitable for UWB Applications.

Abstract A new circularly polarized (CP) slot antenna with a small gap and a stick-shaped shorted strip is presented. The proposed antenna has a sufficient bandwidth for ultrahigh frequency (UHF) radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader applications. The antenna structure consists of a rectangular slot with a small gap, a stick-shaped shorted strip and a 50 Ω coplanar waveguide (CPW) feedline with an asymmetrical ground plane. By using the stick -shaped shorted strip to disturb magnetic current distribution on the slot, the CP radiation can be generated. The measured results demonstrate that the proposed antenna can reach a 10 dB return loss impedance bandwidth of 14.1 % (894–1030 MHz) and a 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 6.4 % (910–970 MHz). The whole antenna size is 80 × 80 × 1.6 mm3.

In this paper, a band-notched compact printed monopole super wideband (SWB) antenna has been designed and fabricated. The SWB antenna composed of a radiating patch with a 50 Ω triangular tapered feed line which is connected through a feed region, and a chamfered ground plane (CGP), that covers the frequency band from 0.9–100 GHz (ratio bandwidth of 111.1:1) with a reflection coefficient |S11| < −10 dB, except in the notched band of 4.7–6 GHz for Wireless local area network IEEE 802.11a and HIPERLAN/2 WLAN band. To realize the band notch characteristics a C-shape parasitic element is employed near the CGP etched with two symmetrical L-slots and placed under the radiating patch. Proposed antenna structure occupies a relatively small space (30 × 40 × 0.787 mm3) and achieved much wider impedance bandwidth as well as higher gain compared with the existing ultra wideband and SWB antennas.
