AbstractA novel tri-beam slot antenna array based on substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology is proposed in this paper. The beam forming network is a 3 × 3 Butler matrix consisted of three couplers and four phase shifters. A 1.76 dB coupler is located between two 3 dB couplers, with this arrangement; the input signal can be divided into three parts with the same amplitude and certain phase differences. Two parallel slots are cut off broadside of SIW transmission line, which constitutes the basic unit of the antenna array. A 3 × 2 slot antenna array is connected with this circuit. Three beams with the directions of −30, 0 and 30° are produced when different ports are excited, respectively. The S parameters, radiation patterns, and gains are simulated and measured, which show that it can be a candidate for multi-beam wireless communication systems.

Abstract This article presents a 60 GHz coplanar fed slotted antenna based on substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology for beam-tilting applications. The longitudinal passive slots are fed via associated SIW holes adjacent to the coplanar feed while the main excitation is provided from the microstrip-to-SIW transition. The antenna array achieves an impedance bandwidth of 57–64 GHz with gains reaching to 12 dBi. The passive SIW slots are excited with various orientations of coplanar feeds and associated holes covering an angular beam-tilting from −56° to +56° with an offset of 10° at the central frequency. The novelty of this work is; beam-tilting is achieved without the use of any active/passive phase shifters which improves the design in terms of losses and provide a much simpler alternative compared to the complex geometries available in the literature at the 60 GHz band.

Reconfigurable antennas have attracted a lot of attention especially in future wireless communication systems. Superior features such as reconfigurable capability, low cost, multi-purpose functions and size miniaturization have given reconfigurable antennas advantage to be integrated into a wireless systems. In this chapter, two types of reconfigurable antennas are discussed. First, frequency reconfigurable narrowband microstrip slot antenna (FRSA) is presented. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at six reconfigurable frequency bands from 2 GHz to 5 GHz with bidirectional radiation pattern. The second antenna design is frequency reconfigurable narrowband patch-slot antenna (FRPSA) is presented. The antenna is a combination of a microstrip patch and slot antenna. Nine different narrow bands are produced by tuning the effective length of the slot. The performances of the antenna in term of simulated and measured results are presented. In conclusion, good agreement between the simulated and measured results has been attained.

This paper presents a multiple-resonance technique that sought to achieve a wide bandwidth for printed wide-slot antennas with fork-shaped stubs. By properly appending an extra fork-shaped stub onto the main fork-shaped stub, the impedance bandwidth was able to be clearly broadened. To validate this technique, two designs where the extra stubs were added at different positions of the main stub were constructed. The measured impedance bandwidths of the proposed antennas reached 148.6% (0.9–6.1 GHz) for S11 < −10 dB, indicating a 17.9% wider bandwidth than that of the normal antenna (0.9–4.3 GHz). Moreover, a stable radiation pattern was observed within the operating frequency range. The proposed antennas were confirmed to be much-improved candidates for applications in various wireless communication systems.

A compact substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) antenna array that operates at 28 GHz and 38 GHz is proposed for fifth generation (5G) applications. The proposed array consists of four SIW cavities fabricated on one single layer of substrate. Each cavity implements a rhombic slot and a triangular-split-ring slot, resonating on TE101 and TE102 modes at 28 GHz and 38 GHz, respectively. In comparison with dual-band SIW antennas in the literature, the proposed configuration depicts a miniature footprint (28.7 × 30.8 mm2) without stacking substrates. To excite the four cavities with equal power, a broadband power divider that supports the propagation of TE10 mode is designed. Accordingly, the impedance bandwidths are 26.6–28.3 GHz and 36.8–38.9 GHz. The measured realized peak gain over the lower and higher bands is 9.3–10.9 dBi and 8.7–12.1 dBi, respectively. The measured half-power beam widths (HPBWs) at 28 GHz and 38 GHz are 20.7° and 15.0°, respectively. Considering these characteristics, including dual bands, high gain, narrow beam widths, miniaturization, and single layer, the proposed antenna array is a suitable candidate for millimeter-wave 5G communication systems with the flexibility in switching operating frequency bands against channel quality variations.
