A post-wall-structured tapered slot antenna (PWTSA) loaded with an embedded metamaterial-based lens (metalens) is proposed and investigated for short-pulse applications. The proposed embedded metalens consists of not only a metallic delay lens, but also an airy acceleration region surrounding the lens, which is different from the conventional metalenses used in various tapered slot antennas and can exhibit a small equivalent permittivity. Therefore, the embedded metalens has a large usable range of permittivity and does not increase the size of the original prototype PWTSA. The post-wall structure and metalens of the proposed antenna can help it achieve a comprehensive and balanced performance, including a high fidelity, low cross-polarization, stable main-lobe direction and gain enhancement. The simulated and measured results show that without any increase in antenna size, the proposed antenna enhances the realized gain by 6.4 dB over the frequency range from 9 to 26 GHz and achieves a stable radiation with the offset of the main-lobe direction being confined to 2° up to 24.9 GHz. Furthermore, the cross-polarization levels are less than −20 dB and the fidelity is kept high for the short-pulse radiation with the frequency spectrum up to 30 GHz.

We present the results of the experimental and theoretical study of the resonant properties and noise of a single cell of a receiving system based on cold-electron bolometers (CEB) with a double-folded slot antenna and coplanar lines. The system was designed to receive signals at 220/240 GHz frequencies with a 5% bandwidth. In measurements, we used the samples of the double-folded slot antennas with slot lengths of 162 um and coplanar line lengths from 185 to 360 um. Measurements of the resonance properties of CEB located at 0.3 K cryostat plate were carried out using a generator based on a high-temperature YBCO Josephson junction located inside the same cryostat at 4 K plate. This arrangement made it possible to obtain smooth amplitude-frequency characteristics with a clearly defined peak of a 15–21 GHz bandwidth at different frequencies. Based on these results, 2-D array of double-folded slot antennas with CEBs as 220/240 GHz LSPE channel prototype was calculated.The absorption efficiency of the array has reached 81% and 77% for 220 and 240 GHz channels, respectively.

Abstract An effective method is proposed to excite the untilted edge slot antennas. In the proposed method, two T-shaped wires are placed at both sides of each untilted slot. Two legs of each T-shaped wire are connected to the waveguide walls, while the third leg is open. One of the T-shaped wires connects the upper broad wall of the waveguide to the narrow wall of the waveguide which contains the slots. Similarly, the other T-shaped wires connect the lower broad wall of the waveguide to the narrow wall of the waveguide that contains the slots. The phase reversal between the adjacent slots can be accomplished by changing the orientation of the T-shaped wires. It is shown that the arm lengths of the connected wires can be employed as a parameter to control the radiated power by the slots. Furthermore, the arm lengths of the open wires can be selected properly to control the dynamic range of the equivalent normalized susceptance associated with each untilted slot antenna. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed antennas, two linear arrays consisting of 11 slots have been designed, implemented, and tested. The simulation and the measurement results of the designed arrays show that for the proposed untilted edge slot antennas, the dynamic range of the equivalent normalized susceptance is improved significantly which leads to a straightforward design process with no requirement to resort to any time-consuming tuning process.
