In order to contribute to achieving noise and emission reduction goals, Fraunhofer and Airbus deal with the development of a morphing leading edge (MLE) as a high lift device for aircraft. Within the European research program “Clean Sky 2”, a morphing leading edge with gapless chord- and camber-increase for high-lift performance was developed. The MLE is able to morph into two different aerofoils—one for cruise and one for take-off/landing, the latter increasing lift and stall angle over the former. The shape flexibility is realised by a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) skin optimised for bending and a sliding contact at the bottom. The material is selected in terms of type, thickness, and lay-up including ply-wise fibre orientation based on numerical simulation and material tests. The MLE is driven by an internal electromechanical actuation system. Load introduction into the skin is realised by span-wise stringers, which require specific stiffness and thermal expansion properties for this task. To avoid the penetration of a bird into the front spar of the wing in case of bird strike, a bird strike protection structure is proposed and analysed. In this paper, the designed MLE including aerodynamic properties, composite skin structure, actuation system, and bird strike behaviour is described and analysed.

Increasing performance in modern hydraulics is achieved by a close investigation of possible enhancements of its components. Prior research has pointed out that electromechanical actuators can form suitable alternatives to hydraulically piloted control systems. Since the requirements at these actuation systems depend on the operating conditions of the system, each actuator can be optimized to the respective hydraulic system. Considering that many different conceptual designs are suitable, the phase of conceptual design plays a decisive role during the design process. Therefore, this paper focuses on the process of developing new conceptual designs for electromechanical valve actuation systems using the method of function structures. Aiming to identify special design features, which need to be considered during the design process of electromechanical actuation systems, an exemplary actuator was designed based on the derived function structure. To highlight the potential of function structures for the development of new electromechanical valve actuation systems, two principal concepts, which allow the reduction of the necessary forces, have been developed by extending the function structure. These concepts have been experimentally investigated to identify their advantages and disadvantages.

In this paper, an alternative design is proposed based on a family of three-legged manipulators. Such manipulators have two actuators (one vertical and one horizontal) in each leg, unlike the standard UP̅S Stewart platform, which has one actuator in each leg. The arrangement of the two actuators is such a way that, to have vertical motion of the shake table only the Vertical Motion Actuators (VMA) are actuated and for longitudinal or lateral motion, the Horizontal Motion Actuators (HMA) alone are moved. Due to its inherent features such as simplified kinematics, control and distributed loading, a study is carried out to determine the performance of such three-legged manipulators as a shake table. Sinusoidal motion and white noise motions are given to the actuators and shown that the VMA forces have linear relationship with the platform forces. The translational stiffness and the torsional stiffness are studied separately for the manipulators. In the dynamic analysis, it is highlighted that the gravity load of the legs is borne by the Vertical actuators, irrespective of the motion being spatial or planar. Hence, this topology provides scope for lighter electromechanical actuation. The performance analysis of the 3 legged configuration is accomplished using simulation results, in comparison to a 7-UP̅S configuration of shake table. A prototype of the shake table is fabricated and tested with earthquake data of El Centro.

The graphene nanosheets (GNS)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite films with out-of-plane dielectric actuation behavior were prepared through a layer-by-layer spin coating process. The GNS-PDMS/PDMS composite films with 1~3 layers of GNS-PDMS films were spin coated on top of the PDMS film. The dielectric, mechanical, and electromechanical actuation properties of the composite films were investigated. The dielectric constant of the GNS-PDMS3/PDMS composite film at 1 kHz is 5.52, which is 1.7 times that of the GNS-PDMS1/PDMS composite film. The actuated displacement of the GNS-PDMS/PDMS composite films is greatly enhanced by increasing the number of GNS-PDMS layers. This study provides a novel alternative approach for fabricating high-performance actuators with out-of-plane actuation behavior.
