Understanding the dynamic characteristic of the cavitation bubble near a solid wall is a fundamental issue for the bubble collapse application and prevention. In the present work, an improved three-dimensional multi-relaxation-time pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann model is adopted to investigate the cavitation bubble collapse near the solid wall. With respect to thermodynamic consistency, Laplace law verification, the three-dimensional pseudopotential multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model is investigated. By the theoretical analysis, it is proved that the model can be regarded as a solver of the Rayleigh–Plesset equation, and confirmed by comparing the results of the lattice Boltzmann simulation and the Rayleigh–Plesset equation calculation for the case of cavitation bubble collapse in the infinite medium field. The bubble collapse near the solid wall is modeled using the improved pseudopotential multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model. We find the lattice Boltzmann simulation and the experimental results have the same dynamic process by comparing the bubble profiles evolution. Form the pressure field and the velocity field evolution it is found that the tapered higher pressure region formed near the top of the bubble is a crucial driving force inducing the bubble collapse. This exploratory research demonstrates that the lattice Boltzmann method is an alternative tool for the study of the interaction between collapsing cavitation bubble and matter.

Numerical simulations were performed for three-dimensional fluid flow and coupled heat transfer in simplified bipolar plates. The Reynolds number of inlet flow is varied from 100 to 900 on the anode side while the Reynolds number is maintained as a constant of 100 on the cathode side. The solid wall surfaces of the bipolar plates are assumed to be adiabatically insulated, except that the active areas of the channels are supplied with uniform heat flux. Results of velocity and temperature distributions for different Reynolds numbers are presented and discussed. It is shown that effects of flow pattern on temperature distributions in channels becomes negligible when the Reynolds number is as high as 900.

Abstract Thermoplastic composite pipes (TCPs) are increasingly used to transport hydrocarbons and water in the oil and gas industry due to their superior properties including corrosion resistance, thermal insulation, light weight, etc. The cross-section of TCPs generally consists of three layers: inner liner, composite laminate, and outer jacket. Three layers are bonded together and form a solid-wall construction. Inner liner and outer jacket made of thermoplastic polymer provide protective barriers for the laminate to against the inner fluid and outer environment. The laminate is constructed by an even number of helically wounded continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite tapes. In this study, mechanical behaviors of a TCP under an internal pressure were investigated by using analytical and finite element analysis (FEA) methods. The analytical method which is based on the three-dimensional (3D) anisotropy elastic theory can take account of non-uniformly distributed stress and strain through the thickness of the pipe wall. FEA models were setup by using the software ABAQUS to predict the stress distribution of the pipe. 3D Tsai-Wu failure criterion was used to predict the maximum internal pressure of the pipe. Effects of some critical parameters, such as the winding angle of composite tapes and the number of reinforced plies, on the internal pressure capacity of TCPs were studied. Results obtained from the analytical and FEA methods were fairly agreed with each other, which showed that with the increasing of the number of reinforced plies the internal pressure capacity of a TCP gradually increases and approaches to an extreme value. In addition, the optimal winding angle which results the maximum internal pressure is not a constant value, instead, it varies with the increasing thickness of the laminate layer. This study provides useful tools and guidance for the design and analysis of TCPs, and is currently under validation through experiments.

Simulation of microscale thermo-fluidic transport has attracted considerable attention in recent years owing to rapid advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations are performed for coupling between flow and heat transfer in a nanochannel. Effects of interface wettability, shear rate and wall temperature are discussed. It is found that there exist the relatively immobile solid-like layers adjacent to each solid wall with higher number density. Both slip length and Kapitza length at the solid-liquid interface increase linearly with the increasing wall temperature. The Kapitza length decreases monotonously with the increasing shear rates. The slip length is found to be overestimated by 5.10% to 10.27%, while Kapitza length is overestimated by 8.92% to 19.09% for the solid-solid interaction modeled by the Lennard-Jones potential.

The destabilization of a thin three-dimensional non-wetting film above a solid wall is examined for the special case in which surfactant is adsorbed onto the free surface of the film. Attention is restricted to the case of a Newtonian surface, with surfactant displaying rapid surface diffusion or exhibiting small Marangoni number, such that the dominant intrinsic interfacial stress is of a purely viscous origin. A surface-excess force approach is adopted for the purpose of incorporating into the analysis the attractive/repulsive dispersive forces acting between the solid wall and the film. Three coupled nonlinear partial differential equations are obtained that describe the ‘large-wavelength’ spatio-temporal evolution of the free film surface following a small initial disturbance. These equations are shown to reduce to results in the literature in the limit of zero interfacial viscosities. Employing linear stability analysis, an explicit dispersion equation is obtained relating the growth coefficient to interfacial viscosities. It is found, at least in the linear regime, that the sum of interfacial shear and dilatational viscosities – and not each separately – imparts a damping effect that in the most extreme case is four-fold relative to the case of no interfacial viscosities. Nonlinear stability analysis in the limiting case of a two-dimensional film indicates that interfacial viscosities may strongly hinder the onset of instability through large interfacial stresses that arise in the vicinity of trough and crest regions of the film.

This paper studies the development of new multifunctional liquid crystal polymeric composites filled with graphene nano platelets (GNPs) for electronic packaging applications. A series of parametric studies were conducted to study the effect of GNP content on the thermal conductivity of LCP-based nanocomposites. Graphene, ranging from 10 wt. % to 50 wt. %, were melt-compounded with LCP using a twin-screw compounder. The extrudates were ground and compression molded into small disc-shaped specimens. The thermal conductivity of LCP matrix was observed to have increased by more than 1000% where as the electrical conductivity increased by 13 orders of magnitude with the presence of 50 wt% GNP fillers. The morphology of the composites was analyzed using SEM micrographs to observe the dispersion of filler within the matrix. These thermally conductive composites represent potential cost-effective materials to injection mold three-dimensional, net-shape microelectronic enclosures with superior heat dissipation performance.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is stated as one of the most common causes of death all over the world. This article explores the influence of multi stenosis in a flexible and rigid left coronary artery (LCA) model using a multiphase blood flow system which has not yet been studied. Two-way fluid–solid interaction (FSI) is employed to achieve flow within the flexible artery model. A realistic three-dimensional model of multi-stenosed LCA was reconstructed based on computerized tomography (CT) images. The fluid domain was solved using a finite volume-based commercial software (FLUENT 2020). The fluid (blood) and solid (wall) domains were fully coupled by using the ANSYS Fluid-Structure Interaction solver. The maximum pressure drops, and wall shear stress was determined across the sever stenosis (90% AS). The higher region of displacement occurs at the pre-stenosis area compared to the other area of the left coronary artery model. An increase in blood flow velocity across the restricted regions (stenosis) in the LCA was observed, whereas the recirculation zone at the post-stenosis and bifurcation regions was noted. An overestimation of hemodynamic descriptors for the rigid models was found as compared to the FSI models.
