AbstractReliable information about degree of red coloration in fruit flesh is essential for grading and sorting of red-fleshed apples. We propose a spatially resolved interactance spectroscopy approach as a new rapid and non-destructive technique to estimate degree of red coloration in the flesh of a red-fleshed apple cultivar ‘Kurenainoyume’. A novel measurement system was developed to obtain spatially resolved interactance spectra (190–1070 nm) for apple fruits at eight different light source-detector separation (SDS) distances on fruit surface. Anthocyanins in apple were extracted using a solvent extraction technique, and their contents were quantified with a spectrophotometer. Partial least squares (PLS) regression analyses were performed to develop estimation models for anthocyanin content from spatially resolved interactance spectra. Results showed that the PLS models based on interactance spectra obtained at different SDS distances achieved different predictive accuracy. Further, the system demonstrated the possibility to detect the degree of red coloration in the flesh at specific depths by identifying an optimal SDS distance. This might contribute to provide a detailed profile of the red coloration (anthocyanins) that is unevenly distributed among different depths of the flesh. This new approach may be potentially applied to grading and sorting systems for red-fleshed apples in fruit industry.

The amounts of anthocyanins, flavonoids, total polyphenol and ascorbic acid in seven apple cultivars from Romania were investigated. The amounts of polyphenol and flavonoids in pulp and skin of apple cultivars ranged between 17.18�7.52 mg GAE/g DW and 20.10�11.06 mg CE/g DW as well as 3.64�1.18 mg GAE/g DW and 10.31�5.57 mg CE/g DW, respectively. The highest and smallest values of ascorbic acid both in the skin and the pulp were observed in the cultivars Mutsu and Starkrimson. The anthocyanin content is positively correlated with the colour intensity of the apple epicarp, being about three-fold higher in Prima than Golden Delicious cultivar. The better antioxidant activity provided by the content of polyphenol, ascorbic acid and flavonoids was in apple fruits of Mutsu cultivar and for this reason it should be regarded as a valuable source of antioxidants.

AbstractIn this paper we shall discuss techniques for accurate, non-destructive, optical characterisation of structures fabricated using quantum well intermixing (QWI). Spatially resolved photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterise the lateral bandgap profiles produced by impurity free vacancy disordering (IFVD) technology. Different features were used to examine the spatial resolution of the intermixing process. Features include 1:1 gratings as well as isolated stripes. From the measurements, the spatial selectivity of IFVD could be identified, and was found to be ∼4.5 μm, in contrast with the spatial resolution of the process of sputtering induced intermixing, which was found to be ∼2.5 μm. In addition, PL measurements on 1:1 gratings fabricated using IFVD show almost complete suppression of intermixing dielectric cap gratings with periods less than 10 microns. Finally, some insight into the limitations and merits of PL and Raman for the precision characterisation of QWI will be presented.

Ultrasonic is one of the most common uses of non-destructive evaluation technique. It could detect flaws inside the structure and on the surface such as voids, holes and cracks. In this investigation, a 304 steel block with a surface-breaking crack was fabricated. A series of test specimen with different depths of surface-breaking crack ranging from 2mm to 9mm was fabricated. The depth of the surface crack was evaluated by the pulse-echo ultrasonic technique. In this work, 2.25MHz, 5MHz and 10MHz of incident waves were employed to detect the depth of the surface-breaking crack. The effect of incident angle on the measuring accuracy was investigated. Experimental results showed that the accuracy of crack sizing detection by ultrasonic technique is not only dependent on the frequency of the incident wave but also dependent on the incident angle.

Spatially resolved flame temperatures are spectroscopically measured using the slope method, over small (≃0.7 μl), relatively homogenous volumes of flame gases. The spatial resolution is uniquely obtained by introducing Co as a thermometric species into isolated volumes via the use of a droplet injection technique. By this method the emission of light is restricted to a limited volume, whose position in the flame can be accurately determined and controlled. Vertical resolution is determined by the width of the entrance slit of the monochromator employed (100 μm in this study), and horizontal resolution is limited by the width of the emission cloud formed by the injected droplets (1 to 3 mm). The possibility of self-absorption effects are greatly reduced because of the short radiation path length involved. The performance of the method is illustrated by its application to the spatial temperature mapping of the secondary reaction zone of a cylindrical air-acetylene flame. The effects of N2 as a sheathing gas and flame stoichiometry on the radial and vertical temperature distribution of the flame are also investigated. It is determined that a large, virtually isothermal, central zone exists in the flame.

The present paper presents an optimization model for quality control of industrial products by using two non-destructive techniques (NDT): infrared termography and ultrasonic methods. The main purpose it is to determinate the best analyzing method using multi-criteria analysis by taking into account the results that outcome from the two non-destructive evaluations. There have been studied defects like: internal defects and surface defects. Therewith were taking into consideration: safety, efficiency of the method and the cost of the equipment used in controlling the product. For this study it was created a concrete slab with embedded defects which had different depths. The sample was tested using active thermography and impact echo methods and the results were studied and integrated in an multi-criteria analysis to reveal the best method for this case.

Abstract This study aimed evaluate the effect of biostimulants, foliar fertilizers and ethephon on the red color in the peel of ‘Daiane’ and ‘Venice’ apples. The experiments were conducted in Caçador/SC, during 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons. In 2015/2016, the treatments were: Control; Biostimulant I; Foliar fertilizer I + Foliar fertilizer II; Biostimulant II and KCl. In 2016/2017, was included the Ethephon treatment. In 2016/2017, Biostimulant I, Foliar fertilizer I + Foliar fertilizer II and Biostimulant II increased the percentage of ‘Daiane’ and ‘Venice’ apples with greater red peel cover, without affecting the quality and maturity of the fruits. In both cultivars, ethephon was treatment that promoted a higher percentage of apples in the category above 80% of red color. Ethephon increased red color intensity of ‘Daiane’ and ‘Venice’ apples, anthocyanin content, starch index, ethylene production and yellowing of background color of the fruits. The red coloration of ‘Venice’ apple peels is enhanced with ethephon, Biostimulant I and Foliar fertilizer I + Foliar fertilizer II and Daiane apples with ethephon, Foliar fertilizer I + Foliar fertilizer II and Biostimulant II.

ABSTRACTWe report on the first non-destructive measurement of the chemical and physical characteristics of the interface between bulk SiO2 and thick aluminum films. Both X-Ray Photoelectron Spictroscopy (XPS) and electrical measurements of unannealed, resistively evaporated Al films on thermal SiO2 indicate an atomically abrupt interface. Post metallization annealing (PMA) at 450°C induces reduction of the SiO2 by the aluminum, resulting in the layer ordering SiO2/Al2O3/Si/Al. The XPS measurement is performed from the SiO2 side after the removal of the Si substrate after etching with XeF2 gas and thinning of the SiO2 layer with HF:ETOH. This represents a powerful new approach to the study of metal-insulator and other interfaces.
