AbstractIn a breeding program, studies of genotypic and phenotypic relationships among agricultural crop traits are useful to design, evaluate, and develop selection criteria for desirable traits. Using path coefficient analysis, the present study was executed to estimate the phenotypic, genotypic, and environmental correlation coefficients between yield and yield-related traits and to determine the direct and indirect effects of yield-related traits on yield per plant. A total of 30 genotypes of Vigna subterranea were studied under tropical conditions at two sites over two planting seasons (considered as four environments). The experiment at each site used a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Data were collected on vegetative and yield component attributes. Based on analysis of variance, pooled results showed that there were positive and highly significant differences (p ≤ 0.01) among the 30 genotypes for all attributes studied. Highly significant and positive strong correlation at phenotypic level was observed for dry seed weight (0.856), hundred seed weight (0.754), fresh pod weight (0.789), and total pod weight (0.626) with yield in kg per hectare, while moderate positive correlations were observed for harvest cut (0.360) and days to maturity (0.356). However, a perfect positive correlation was observed for the dry weight of pods with seed yield. In contrast, days to 50% flowering (− 0.350) showed a negative significant relationship with yield per hectare. The dried pod weight attribute (1.00) had a high positive direct effect on yield. Fresh pod weight had the greatest indirect effect on yield per hectare, followed by the number of total pods by dry pod weight. As a result, dry pod weight, hundred seed weight, number of total pods, and fresh pod weight could be used as selection criteria to improve the seed yield of Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea).

Ten sunflower commercial female parental lines were evaluated for various parameters under field conditions to estimate genetic parameters, correlation coefficient, and path analyses. Interactions of seed germination, 1000 seed weight, oil and protein content with seed yield were examined. After three years of observations, positive significant correlations were found while comparing seed yield with 1000 seed weight. Negative significant correlations were found by comparing seed yield and seed germination. Positive but not significant correlation was found while comparing seed yield with oil content in sunflower seed. Path coefficient analysis indicates that 1000 seed weight has maximum positive and seed germination maximum negative direct effect on yield.

Segregating populations (BC1F3 and F3:4) from an interspecific cross (C. scarabaeoides × C. cajan) were evaluated for variability and association studies for yield and its component traits. In both the generations, high values of PCV and GCV were obtained for pods per plant, seed yield per plant and fruiting branches per plant. High estimates of heritability as well as genetic advance were observed for fruiting branches per plant followed by pods per plant and seed yield per plant. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance revealed the presence of less environmental influence and prevalence of additive gene action. Seed yield per plant had highly significant and positive association with pods per plant, fruiting branches and 100-seed weight. Path coefficient analysis revealed that pods per plant, fruiting branches and 100-seed weight contributing maximum towards seed yield per plant. The study revealed that fruiting branches and pods per plant could be used as selection criteria for improving yield.

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the major oil yielding plant in India, but the production of sesame seed is very low. Now it is necessary to establish the selection criteria that directly or indirectly increase the seed yield per sesame plant. In this study, freshly harvested seeds of 21 stable advance lines of sesame and their 8 parents such as R-9, B-14, B-9, B-67, T-12, IDP-51, IET-2, HT-1 were taken to evaluate the selection criteria for higher seed yield. The results indicated that number of branches/plant, number of capsule/plant, number of seeds/capsule and 100 seed weight were strongly related with sesame yield. Thus, selection of advance lines of sesame, that have higher seed yield, can be done on the basis of number of branches/plant, number of seeds/capsule, 100 seed weight and harvest index. Moreover, these traits may be employed as the selection criteria for the betterment of sesame seed yield in future agricultural system.

Understanding phenotypic and genotypic variability of Bangladeshi lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) in relation to exotic lentil is important in attempting to widen the genetic base of the germplasm in the country. An experiment was conducted using 30 diverse lentil genotypes to study the agromorphological and genetic variability, heritability, expected genetic advance and inter-relationship of ten yield attributing traits. The genotypes showed highly significant (p<0.01) variations for all of the studied traits. These characters also had higher phenotypic co-efficient of variation (PCV) than those of the corresponding genotypic co-efficient of variation (GCV). High heritability (ranged from 66-98%) was found among the traits. Seed yield plant-1 and number of seeds plant-1 showed high heritability accompanied with high genetic advance (as percent mean). Correlation coefficient studies revealed that number of pods plant-1, number of seeds plant-1 and 100-seed weight contributed to highly significant (p<0.01) positive correlation with seed yield plant-1. Days to 50% flowering and days to maturity were showed highly significant negative correlation with seed yield plant-1. Path analysis showed the highest positive direct effects of 100-seed weight followed by the number of secondary branches plant-1 and number of seeds plant-1 on seed yield plant-1. Days to 50% flowering via 100-seed weight contributed the highest negative indirect effect on seed yield plant-1. Maximum negative direct effect of plant height and days to 50% flowering was observed on seed yield plant-1. Results indicated that the exotic accessions could be effective for the improvement of the yield of lentil.

The associations among yield-related traits and the pattern of influence on rice grain yield were investigated. This evaluation is important to determine the direct and indirect effects of various traits on yield to determine selection criteria for higher grain yield. Fifteen rice genotypes were evaluated under tropical condition at five locations in two planting seasons. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications across the locations. Data were collected on vegetative and yield components traits. The pooled data based on the analysis of variance revealed that there were significant differences (p<0.001) among the fifteen genotypes for all the characters studied except for panicle length and 100-grain weight. Highly significant and positive correlations at phenotypic level were observed in grain weight per hill (0.796), filled grains per panicle (0.702), panicles per hill (0.632), and tillers per hill (0.712) with yield per hectare, while moderate positive correlations were observed in flag leaf length to width ratio (0.348), days to flowering (0.412), and days to maturity (0.544). By contrast, unfilled grains per panicle (-0.225) and plant height (-0.342) had a negative significant association with yield per hectare. Filled grains per panicle (0.491) exhibited the maximum positive direct effect on yield followed by grain weight per hill (0.449), while unfilled grain per panicle (-0.144) had a negative direct effect. The maximum indirect effect on yield per hectare was recorded by the tillers per hill through the panicles per hill. Therefore, tillers per hill, filled grains per panicle, and grain weight per hill could be used as selection criteria for improving grain yield in rice.

A field experiment was conducted during <italic>kharif</italic> season 2013 to estimate the correlations and path coefficients for ten quantitative characters among 72 cowpea germplasm. Seed yield per plant had positive significant correlation with days to 50% flowering, plant height, primary branches per plant, pods per plant, pod length, seeds per pod and 100-seed weight at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Path coefficient analysis revealed that primary branches per plant and 100-seed weight had high direct positive effect on seed yield per plant at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Pod length, days to maturity, 100 seed weight and pod wall proportion had high positive direct effects on seed yield per plant at only genotypic level. Correlation and path analysis indicated that for increasing seed yield in cowpea direct selection should be carried out for higher values of primary branches per plant, pods length, days to maturity and 100 seed weight.

Faba bean is a grain legume and grown for its high protein content in the seed. It is also serves as a rotational crop which play great role in controlling disease epidemics in areas were cereal mono-cropping is abundant. Yield in faba bean, similar to the other crops, is a complex trait and constitute by many of morphological and physiological traits. This study was carried out during 2011-12 and 2012-13 in two region of Iran including Guilan and Lorestan provinces. Field experiments were conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications and ten genotypes. The results of combined analysis of variance indicated that the studied genotypes differed significantly for all of the studied traits. The results indicated also environment effect and environment ? genotype interaction effects were significant or highly significant for all of the traits. The highest seed yield were determined for genotype 1 (3159.9 and 4016.9 kg ha-1 at 2012 and 2013, respectively) in Guilan and genotype 5 (495.44 kg ha-1) in Lorestan. The results of correlation analysis indicated that there were positive significant correlation coefficients between seed yield and seed length (LS), seed width (WS), pod length (PL) and hundred seed weight (HSW) in Guilan province at two cropping season. Path coefficient analysis indicated that traits containing number of pod per plant, number of steam per plant, pod length, seed length/width ratio and hundred seed weight had the highest positive direct effects on dry seed yield in studied faba bean genotypes. Attention should be paid to some of characters such as pod length, hundred seed weight, number of pods per plant and number of stems per plant for augmentation of seed yield and these traits could be used as selection criteria in faba bean breeding programs. These findings indicate that selection for each or full of the above traits would be accompanied by high yielding ability under such conditions. It could be concluded that the high yielding genotypes, such as 1 and 2 could be used to improve faba beans and making possibilities of extending production of this legume crop.

An experiment was conducted in the year 2009 to estimate genotypic and phenotypic correlations in all possible combinations for seventy five accessions of black gram with the object to get the information on relative importance of various yield contributing characters and thus increase the efficiency of selection for higher yield based on yield components. The characters, plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, number of seeds per pod and 1000-seed weight showed positive correlation with seed yield both at phenotypic and genotypic level. The magnitude of genotypic correlation was higher than phenotypic correlation indicating that the association of traits with seed yield controlled by genetic factors like linkage and/ or pleiotropism. Path coefficient analysis indicated that characters namely number of seeds per plant and 1000-seed weight had high magnitude and positive direct effect on seed yield.

The experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications during the dry season, 2014 at Yezin Agricultural University, Myanmar to determine the extent of genetic variability for important yield attributes and to determine interrelationship among the traits and their direct and indirect effects on yield of forty Myanmar sesame germplasm. All genotypes were phenotyped for ten agronomic traits. All basic statistical parameters and phenotypic correlation were generated using STAR v2.0.1 and PBTools v1.4. Genotypic correlation and path analysis between yield and yield components were evaluated by SPAR 2.0 and R software package. Wide variations were observed for all traits studied in all germplasm. Primary branches, capsules and seed yield per plant showed high genotypic and phenotypic variances, PCV and GCV estimates that are enough scope for selection. Progeny selection will be effective to improve plant height and number of capsules per plant indicating high heritability with high genetic advance. In both genotypic and phenotypic correlation analysis, main seed yield contributing traits in sesame production were days to first and 50% flowering, plant height, primary branches, capsules per plant and capsule length. According to path analysis, positive direct effect on seed yield was contributed by days to first flowering followed by 1000 seed weight, capsules per plant, no. of primary branches per plant and capsule length. Therefore, days to first flowering, 1000 seed weight, capsules per plant, primary branches and capsule length may be good selection criteria for further sesame breeding programs related to high yielding varieties.
