AbstractThis paper investigates the application of large-scale solar photovoltaic (SPV) system for voltage stability improvement of weak national grids. Large-scale SPV integration has been investigated on the Nigerian power system to enhance voltage stability and as a viable alternative to the aged shunt reactors currently being used in the Nigerian national grid to mitigate overvoltage issues in Northern Nigeria. Two scenarios of increasing SPV penetration level (PL) are investigated in this work, namely, centralized large-scale SPV at the critical bus and dispersed large-scale SPV across the weak buses. The voltage stability of the system is evaluated using the active power margin (APM) also called megawatt margin (MWM) derived from Active Power–Voltage (P–V) analysis, the reactive power margin (RPM) and the associated critical voltage–reactive power ratio (CVQR) index obtained from Reactive Power–Voltage (Q–V) analysis. All simulations are carried out in DIgSILENT PowerFactory software and result analyses done with MATLAB. The results show that with centralized SPV generation for the case study system, the highest bus voltage is able to fall within acceptable limits at 26.29% (1000 MW), while the dispersed SPV achieves this at 21.44% (800 MW). Also, the dispersed SPV scenario provides better voltage stability improvement for the system as indicated by the MWM, RPM and the CVQR index of the system. Therefore, this work provides a baseline insight on the potential application of large-scale SPV in weak grids such as the Nigerian case to address the voltage stability problems in the power system while utilizing the abundant solar resource to meet the increasing energy demand.

AbstractA new meta-heuristic Pathfinder Algorithm (PFA) is adopted in this paper for optimal allocation and simultaneous integration of a solar photovoltaic system among multi-laterals, called interline-photovoltaic (I-PV) system. At first, the performance of PFA is evaluated by solving the optimal allocation of distribution generation problem in IEEE 33- and 69-bus systems for loss minimization. The obtained results show that the performance of proposed PFA is superior to PSO, TLBO, CSA, and GOA and other approaches cited in literature. The comparison of different performance measures of 50 independent trail runs predominantly shows the effectiveness of PFA and its efficiency for global optima. Subsequently, PFA is implemented for determining the optimal I-PV configuration considering the resilience without compromising the various operational and radiality constraints. Different case studies are simulated and the impact of the I-PV system is analyzed in terms of voltage profile and voltage stability. The proposed optimal I-PV configuration resulted in loss reduction of 77.87% and 98.33% in IEEE 33- and 69-bus systems, respectively. Further, the reduced average voltage deviation index and increased voltage stability index result in an improved voltage profile and enhanced voltage stability margin in radial distribution systems and its suitability for practical applications.

Worldwide renewable energy resources, especially solar energy, are growing dramatically in view of energy shortage and environmental concerns. The main objective of this study the design of a solar photovoltaic system in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment so as to enhance its output capacity before its integration with the grid. And to stabilize and improve the active power output from the solar system by designing an efficient controller for the inverter for DC to AC conversion based on AI optimization technique. Enhance the system reliability and efficiency by integrating it with the grid via a transformer with the desired grid voltage and frequency and studying its performance at different loads. This work provides a comprehensive design and implementation of power regulatory per phase inverter with proposed differential evolutionary pulse regulation control. Finally the work is made efficiently integrating it with the grid. The designed system is also capable of feeding reactive power to the grid when required. The computational methodology of the proposed modulation technique is very easy and the technique can be applied to the multilevel inverter with any number of levels.

The techno-economic viability of a hybrid system of solar photovoltaic and diesel generator with the most likely stand-alone systems, i.e. diesel-powered system and solar photovoltaic system, has been analyzed for energy demand through optimization and sensitivity analysis using HOMER. The concept of hybridizing is that the base load is to be covered by largest and firmly available renewable energy source(s), and other intermittent source(s) should augment the base load to cover the peak load. The model has been designed to provide an optimal system configuration based on hour-by-hour data for energy availability and demands. Based on the simulation results, the hybrid system is found to be economically feasible enough to replace the stand-alone system currently practicing to fulfill the energy demand during power cut-off in Nepal.

This paper presents the mathematical modeling of three-phase grid connected inverter fed by Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) system with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). Analysis has been carried out to choose the proper modulation index for maximum output for three-phase inverter. With this modulation index, the variation of the active and reactive power for different loads has been presented along with major parameters like Transfer ratio and Efficiency. Also the Real and Reactive power output of the SPV has been measured with various solar Radiation levels.

The demand for sustainable energy has increased significantly over the years due to the rapid depletion of fossil fuels. The solar photovoltaic system has been the advantage of converting solar irradiation directly to electricity, and it is suitable for most of the regions. But in the case of solar energy conversion, the voltage evolved from the solar photovoltaic cells is not adequate to meet the energy demand. Therefore, the converters and inverters with energy storage systems are used to fulfill the energy demand. These conversion architectures create new challenges for effective management of the grid. Due to the evaluation of power generation, load in a particular region or area, let us simplify with the help of the duck curve. The study is focused on the energy auditing, assessment, and measurement of solar irradiation from PV system design software. This graphical representation is implemented with a typical electricity load pattern at any region.
