The photolysis reactions of the complex ions [Cr(en)2ox]+ and [Cren(ox)2]− have been studied in the pH range 1 → 3 and at temperatures from 0 to 25 °C. It has been found that both ions photoaquate to a monodentate protonated ethylenediamine complex which then undergoes further aquation thermally with loss of the ethylenediamine ligand. Quantum yields for these aquations were measured for irradiation into the ligand field bands, the values obtained being 0.18 and 0.02, respectively. The results are discussed in terms of known empirical correlations for Cr(III) complexes. Assuming these reactions may occur from the 4T2g state as precursor, arguments are presented that the correlation between quantum yield and ΔE may depend on mixing of the 4T2g and 2Eg states, and its effect on the intersystem crossing rate constant.

Four difluoroboron (BF2) β-diketonate nopinone complexes 3a–3d which exhibited typical AIE property were synthesized. Owing to high absolute fluorescence quantum yields of 3b, EL device based on 3b was fabricated, which exhibits a blue-green light.

The phenoxy cation has been generated in polar and nonpolar solutions by multiphoton ionization of nitrobenzene using nanosecond pulses of 266 nm and 355 nm light. The ions have been characterized by pulsed conductivity (ion mobility) measurements and transient absorption spectroscopy. The involvement of the phenoxy ion in ion-molecule chemistry with either neutral solute or solvent molecules has also been observed and the photochemical products and quantum yields of the ion-molecule products are presented and compared with the neutral photochemistry results.

Chosen polyoxometalate (POM) anions and their lanthanide(III) complexes, LnPOM, have been synthesized and spectroscopically characterized in solid state, aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. POMs, such as Keggin's, Dawson's and Anderson's type,Na9EuW10O36, compositions that function as inorganic cryptands ([(Na)P5W30O110]14−-Preyssler anion, and [(Na)As4W40O140]27−), containing inorganic(Na+,K+,NH4+)or organic (tetrabutylammonium,NBu4+) counter cations were obtained and their Ln(III) complexes (sandwiched and encapsulated) studied. The synthesized compounds were identified using elemental and thermogravimetric analysis, UV-Vis spectrophotometry and FTIR spectroscopy. The complexation studies were carried out with the use Nd(III) and Er(III) optical absorption and Eu(III) luminescence spectroscopy. Luminescence characterization, including results of intensity, quantum yields and luminescence lifetimes of EuPOM complexes in aqueous, non-aqueous solutions (DMF, DMSO, acetonitryle) and solid are discussed. Based on luminescence lifetime measurements of the Eu(III) ion the hydration numbers of its sandwiched (efficient emitters) and encrypted complexes have been determined and quenching effect discussed. The Eu(III) complexes entrapped in a xerogel matrix have been studied as luminescent materials. Luminescence intensity, lifetime and quantum yield of the EuPOM materials and their photochemical stability, during continuous UV irradiation, were tested.

Photolysis may represent an important degradation process of pollutants at the surface of soil. In the present work, we report a detailed study on the degradation of two pesticides: mesotrione and metsulfuron methyl using a sunlight simulator. In a first step, we studied the photochemical behaviour at the surface of clays from the kinetic as well as from the analytical point of view. In both cases, the quantum yields were found to be higher when compared to those obtained in aqueous solutions. The effect of iron(III), water, and humic substances contents was studied. In the former cases, an increase of the degradation rate was observed while an inhibition was observed with the latter owing to a filter effect phenomenon. In a second step, we studied the photodegradation at the surface of natural soil and identified the generated byproducts. They appear to mainly arise from photohydrolysis process.
