The ramping solar energy to electricity conversion efficiencies of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells during the last five years have opened new doors to low-cost solar energy. The record power conversion efficiency has climbed to 19.3% in August 2014 and then jumped to 20.1% in November. In this review, the main achievements for perovskite solar cells categorized from a viewpoint of device structure are overviewed. The challenges and prospects for future development of this field are also briefly presented.

AbstractIn this study, a new, simple, and novel oblique electrostatic inkjet (OEI) technique is developed to deposit a titanium oxide (TiO2) compact layer (CL) on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate without the need for a vacuum environment for the first time. The TiO2 is used as electron transport layers (ETL) in planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). This bottom-up OEI technique enables the control of the surface morphology and thickness of the TiO2 CL by simply manipulating the coating time. The OEI-fabricated TiO2 is characterized tested and the results are compared with that of TiO2 CLs produced by spin-coating and spray pyrolysis. The OEI-deposited TiO2 CL exhibits satisfactory surface coverage and smooth morphology, conducive for the ETLs in PSCs. The power-conversion efficiencies of PSCs with OEI-deposited TiO2 CL as the ETL were as high as 13.19%. Therefore, the present study provides an important advance in the effort to develop simple, low-cost, and easily scaled-up techniques. OEI may be a new candidate for depositing TiO2 CL ETLs for highly efficient planar PSCs, thus potentially contributing to future mass production.

The interfacial compatibility between compact TiO 2 and perovskite layers is critical for the performance of planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A compact TiO 2 film employed as an electron-transport layer (ETL) was modified using 3-aminopropyl trimethoxy silane (APMS) hydrolysate. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs composed of an APMS-hydrolysate-modified TiO 2 layer increased from 13.45 to 15.79%, which was associated with a significant enhancement in the fill factor (FF) from 62.23 to 68.04%. The results indicate that APMS hydrolysate can enhance the wettability of γ-butyrolactone (GBL) on the TiO 2 surface, form a perfect CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 film, and increase the recombination resistance at the interface. This work demonstrates a simple but efficient method to improve the TiO 2 /perovskite interface that can be greatly beneficial for developing high-performance PSCs.

We report on metal-organic halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 films converted from PbI2 precursors for planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells. PbI2 films as a precursor were deposited by hot-wall method and conventional vacuum evaporation. The conversion to perovskite phase from the PbI2 films were performed by annealing in methyl ammonium iodine (MAI) vapour at 120-150 °C. We confirmed that no residual PbI2 phase can be detected in the converted perovskite films by x-ray diffraction measurements. The surface morphology of the perovskite films was measured by AFM. Roughness Ra of the films is 17.8 nm, which is comparable value to the reported ones. Using the converted perovskite films we fabricated tentative perovskite solar cells with a device architecture of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/Perovskite/C60/Ag. The power conversion efficiencies of the fabricated solar cells from a conventional evaporation and the hot-wall method exhibited 2.22 and 2.33%, respectively.

A robust electron transport layer (ETL) is an essential component in planar-heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a sol-gel-driven ZrSnO4 thin film is synthesized and its optoelectronic properties are systematically investigated. The optimized processing conditions for sol-gel synthesis produce a ZrSnO4 thin film that exhibits high optical transmittance in the UV-Vis-NIR range, a suitable conduction band maximum, and good electrical conductivity, revealing its potential for application in the ETL of planar-heterojunction PSCs. Consequently, the ZrSnO4 ETL-based devices deliver promising power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 19.05% from CH3NH3PbI3-based planar-heterojunction devices. Furthermore, the optimal ZrSnO4 ETL also contributes to decent long-term stability of the non-encapsulated device for 360 h in an ambient atmosphere (T~25 °C, RH~55%,), suggesting great potential of the sol-gel-driven ZrSnO4 thin film for a robust solution-processed ETL material in high-performance PSCs.
