Steady-state fluorescence (SSF) technique in conjunction with UV-visible (UVV) technique and atomic force microscope (AFM) was used for studying film formation from TiO2covered nanosized polystyrene (PS) latex particles (320 nm). The effects of film thickness and TiO2content on the film formation and structure properties of PS/TiO2composites were studied. For this purpose, two different sets of PS films with thicknesses of 5 and 20 μm were prepared from pyrene-(P-) labeled PS particles and covered with various layers of TiO2using dip-coating method. These films were then annealed at elevated temperatures above glass transition temperature () of PS in the range of 100–280°C. Fluorescence emission intensity, from P and transmitted light intensity, were measured after each annealing step to monitor the stages of film formation. The results showed that film formation from PS latexes occurs on the top surface of PS/TiO2composites and thus developed independent of TiO2content for both film sets. But the surface morphology of the films was found to vary with both TiO2content and film thickness. After removal of PS, thin films provide a quite ordered porous structure while thick films showed nonporous structure.

Solar cells with ZnO film/ZnO nanorods (NRs)/PbS quantum dot (QD) photoelectrodes were constructed and various properties were studied. The ZnO NRs were grown for different periods varying from 0 (ZnO film) to 30 min (ZnO NR30) and the effect of growth period on the photovoltaic properties was investigated. The cell with ZnO film/PbS QD as photoelectrode showed the open circuit voltage VOC of 0.59 V, short circuit current density JSC of 10.06 mAcm−2, and the power conversion efficiency of 3.29% under one sun illumination (air mass 1.5 global illumination at 100 mWcm−2). In a device containing of ZnO film/ZnO NR10/PbS QD (as photoelectrode), mentioned photovoltaic parameters increased to 0.61 V, 10.47 mAcm−2 and 3.81%, respectively.

Precision structured polymer thin films with microstructures comparable to or greater than the film thickness are highly desired in many applications. Such micro-patterned thin films, however, are difficult to fabricate using the standard hot embossing technology where both halves of the mold are made of hard materials. This study investigated a rubber-assisted embossing process for structuring thin polymer films. The advantages of the rubber backup instead of a hard support include but are not limited to 1) simplifying the embossing tool, 2) protecting the embossing master, 3) facilitating embossing pressure buildup, and 4) accommodating conformal forming of microscale shell patterns. Several design and process variables including rubber hardness, embossing temperature, embossing pressure and holding time were carefully studied. Thin polystyrene films in a thickness of 25 μm were accurately patterned with microgrooves of characteristic dimensions on the order of 100 μm.
