New two-photon absorption dyes (TPEPT1 and TPEPT2) were designed and synthesized. These materials show different 2PA properties and unique AIE effects, in which TPEPT1 with higher brightness was used to perform a cell-imaging proposal.

ABSTRACT1,4-Distyrylbenzenes with terminal dialkylamino groups and a central 2,5-disubstitution with electron-accepting groups were prepared via twofold Horner-olefination. These chromophores with a quadrupolar donor-acceptor-donor substitution and C2-symmetry absorb in the violet to green region of the visible spectrum exhibit large two-photon-absorption cross-sections when irrdiated in the NIR. Whereas a variation of the solvent polarity only slightly alters the absorption spectra, the fluorescence appears to be highly responsive. Besides a positive solvatochromism, the emission is very sensitive towards protonation. Quenching or appearance of new emitting species depends on the substitution pattern and is controlled by the concentration of the acid.

The paper deals with determination of two-photon absorption cross-sections of selected representatives of diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole. The materials were optimized in order to test the influence of various substitutions on the diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole basic molecule. The two-photon absorption cross-sections were determined using two-photon excited fluorescence technique. A considerably high two-photon absorption cross-section in order of 1000 GM was found for non-symmetrically substituted derivative with donor-acceptor structure. All of the derivatives showed strong fluorescence in solid state visible by naked eye. These results demonstrate that this class of materials can be used in e.g. two-photon fluorescence microscopy in the form of nanoparticles.

Spectrally tunable, two-photon active benzothiadiazole-based fluorescent materials are realized by a simple synthetic strategy. Deep red emission from two-photon absorption, and incorporation into water-soluble polymer dots are achieved.
