The direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is a portable device and has the potential to produce 10 times higher energy density than lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. It is essential to build efficient methanol electrooxidation reaction electrocatalysts for DMFCs to achieve their practical application in future energy storage and conversion. A catalyst consisting of nickel–palladium supported onto mesostructured silica nanoparticles (NiPd–MSN) was synthesized by the wet impregnation method, while MSN was synthesized using the sol-gel method. MSN act as a catalyst support and has very good characteristics for practical support due to its large surface area (>1000 m2/g) and good chemical and mechanical stability. The microstructure and catalytic activity of the electrocatalysts were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Brunauer–Emmet–Teller (BET) theory, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and chronoamperometry (CA). XRD showed that the NiPd–MSN electrocatalysts had a high crystallinity of PdO and NiO, while FESEM displayed that NiPd was dispersed homogeneously onto the high surface area of MSN. In alkaline media, the catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) of NiPd–MSN demonstrated the highest, which was 657.03 mA mg−1 more than the other electrocatalysts. After 3600 s of CA analysis at −0.2 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), the MOR mass activity of NiPd–MSN in alkaline media was retained at a higher mass activity of 190.8 mA mg−1 while the other electrocatalyst was significantly lower than that. This electrocatalyst is a promising anode material toward MOR in alkaline media.

Semen was collected from four rams, using artificial vagina and viability%, motility% and plasma membrane integrity% were measured. Fresh ejaculates (n = 32) were separated by modified swim-up separation using modified human tubal fluid medium. Four fractions of supernatant were collected at 15-minute intervals. The mean volume, mass activity, concentration, motility%, viability%, normal morphology and membrane integrity% (HOST +ve) of fresh semen were 1.0 ± 0.14, 4.1 ± 0.1 × 109 spermatozoa/ml, 85.0 ± 1.3, 89.4 ± 1.0, 85.5 ± 0.7, 84.7 ± 0.5 respectively. There was no significant (P>0.05) difference in fresh semen quality parameters between rams. The motility%, viability% and HOST +ve % of first, second, third and fourth fractions were 53.4 ± 0.5, 68.2 ± 0.3, 74.8 ± 0.3 and 65.5 ± 0.4; 55.5 ± 0.4, 66.2 ± 0.4, 74.5 ± 0.3 and 73.6 ± 0.3 and 66.7 ± 0.5, 66.8 ± 0.5, 65.2 ± 0.4 and 74.7 ± 0.5 respectively. The motility%, viability% and membrane integrity% of separated semen samples differed significantly (P<0.05) between four fractions. The mean motility% and viability% were significantly higher (P<0.05) in third fraction (74.8 ± 0.3%), whereas the mean HOST +ve% was significantly higher (P<0.05) in fourth fraction (74.7 ± 0.5). All quality parameters of separated spermatozoa were significantly (P<0.05) lower than that of fresh semen. The pregnancy rates were higher with fresh semen (71%) in comparison to that of separated sample (57%).Bangl. vet. 2016. Vol. 33, No. 2, 62-70

<p>Herein, we develop a non-selective charge compensation strategy to prepare multi-single-atom doped carbon (MSAC) in which a sodium p-toluenesulfonate (PTS-Na) doped polypyrrole (S-PPy) polymer is designed to anchor discretionary mixtures of multiple metal cations, including iron (Fe3+), cobalt (Co3+), ruthenium (Ru3+), palladium (Pd2+), indium (In3+), iridium (Ir2+), and platinum (Pt2+) . As illustrated in Figure 1, the carbon surface can be tuned with different level of compositional complexities, including unary Pt1@NC, binary (MSAC-2, (PtFe)1@NC), ternary (MSAC-3, (PtFeIr)1@NC), quaternary (MSAC-4, (PtFeIrRu)1@NC), quinary (MSAC-5, (PtFeIrRuCo)1@NC), senary (MSAC-6, (PtFeIrRuCoPd)1@NC), and septenary (MSAC-7, (PtFeIrRuCoPdIn)1@NC) samples. The structural evolution of carbon surface dictates the activities of both ORR and HER. The senary MSAC-6 achieves the ORR mass activity of 18.1 A·mgmetal-1 at 0.9 V (Vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) over 30K cycles, which is 164 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. The quaternary MSAC-4 presented a comparable HER catalytic capability with that of Pt/C. These results indicate that the highly complexed carbon surface can enhance its ability over general electrochemical catalytic reactions. The mechanisms regarding of the ORR and HER activities of the alternated carbon surface are also theoretically and experimentally investigated in this work, showing that the synergistic effects amongst the co-doped atoms can activate or inactivate certain single-atom sites.</p>

Abstract Mass activity and long-term stability are two major issues in current fuel cell catalyst designs. While supported catalysts normally suffer from poor long-term stability but show high mass activity, unsupported catalysts tend to perform better in the first point while showing deficits in the latter one. In this study, a facile synthesis route towards self-supported metallic electrocatalyst nanoarchitectures with both aspects in mind is outlined. This procedure consists of a palladium seeding step of ion track-etched polymer templates followed by a nickel electrodeposition and template dissolution. With this strategy, free-standing nickel nanowire networks which contain palladium nanoparticles only in their outer surface are obtained. These networks are tested in anodic half-cell measurements for demonstrating their capability of oxidising methanol in alkaline electrolytes. The results from the electrochemical experiments show that this new catalyst is more tolerant towards high methanol concentrations (up to $${5}\,\hbox{mol}\,\hbox{L}^{-1}$$ 5 mol L - 1 ) than a commercial carbon supported palladium nanoparticle catalyst and provides a much better long-term stability during potential cycling.
