Abstract Dielectric capacitors with high energy storage density (Wrec) and efficiency (η) are in great demand for high/pulsed power electronic systems, but the state-of-the-art lead-free dielectric materials are facing the challenge of increasing one parameter at the cost of the other. Herein, we report that high Wrec of 6.3 J cm-3 with η of 90% can be simultaneously achieved by constructing a room temperature M2–M3 phase boundary in (1-x)AgNbO3-xAgTaO3 solid solution system. The designed material exhibits high energy storage stability over a wide temperature range of 20–150 °C and excellent cycling reliability up to 106 cycles. All these merits achieved in the studied solid solution are attributed to the unique relaxor antiferroelectric features relevant to the local structure heterogeneity and antiferroelectric ordering, being confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. This work provides a good paradigm for developing new lead-free dielectrics for high-power energy storage applications.

The lead-free piezoelectric ceramics display good piezoelectric properties which are comparable with Pb(Zr,Ti)O3(PZT) and these materials overcome the hazard to the environment and human health. The Bi0.5(Na,K)0.5TiO3(BNKT) is rapidly developed because of good piezoelectric, ferroelectric, and dielectric properties compared to PZT. The origin of giant strain of BNKT piezoelectric materials was found at morphotropic phase boundary due to crystal change from tetragonal to orthorhombic and/or precipitation of cubic phases, in addition to domain switching mechanism. The dopants or secondary phases withABO3structure as solid solution are expected to change the crystal structure and create the vacancies which results in enhancement of the piezoelectric properties. In this work, we reviewed the current development of BNKT by dopants and secondary phase as solid solution. Our discussion will focus on role of dopants and secondary phase to piezoelectric properties of BNKT. This result will open the direction to control the properties of lead-free piezoelectric materials.

Hysteresis loop and dielectric properties of lead-free BaTiO3-La2O3 piezoelectric ceramics and BaTiO3 ceramic compared with pure BaTiO3 has been systematically studied. The amount of La2O3 addition ranged from 0.3~0.5mol% by controlling the sintering temperature. Dielectric properties of BaTiO3-La2O3 were promoted after the addition of La2O3, the maximum value of dielectric constant reached 8,624, recently. The role of La2O3 on the solid-state sintering of BaTiO3 is discussed on the basis of the solid-solution defect model.

This chapter analyses the role of electricity storage as an innovative strategy to attain the Mexican Government’s goals regarding carbon dioxide emission reduction and energy transition. The survey includes the analysis of the different electricity storage technologies as well as the legal framework governing electricity storage as the fifth link of the energy supply chain from a comparative perspective. The authors discuss whether energy storage is a generation or a distribution/transmission asset. The chapter also analyses Mexico’s experiences in energy storage and briefly describes the way it is regulated in other jurisdictions. Finally, the authors propose the regulation of energy storage as a separate licensed activity.
