<p>The chemical functionalization of amino multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-NH2) by selenium dioxide (SeO2) was used to produce Poly [MWCNT/Imidoselenium] composite. The prepared poly-composite was characterized by FTIR, SEM, TEM, XRD, UV, DSC and TGA. The DC electrical conductivity of poly-composite was 4.3×10-4 S/cm due to the interaction between the nanotubes. </p>

Fermented tapioca which is a new starting material was used as a carbon precursor. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were deposited on silicon wafer (Si) by Thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition (TCVD). The gas flow of Argon (Ar) was constant at 70 bubbles per minute and 20 minutes of deposition time. Before the deposition process, silicon was coated with Nickel using spin coater. Various parameters such as amount of inoculums have been studied. Chemical functional groups of carbon nanotubes were characterized using FT-IR Spectroscopy. The FT-IR result shows peaks attributed to multi–walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) vibration modes.

ABSTRACTCarbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been considered as a promising interconnect material to replace the solder bump used in the flip chip package because of their special electrical, mechanical and thermal properties, which may promote both the performance and reliability of the flip chip packaging. In this paper, electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of CNTs on substrates has been demonstrated for the interconnect application. EPD is a simple, low cost and high throughput process that is capable to produce densely packed film with good homogeneity at low temperature. By altering the electric fields and deposition time during the EPD process, the thickness of the CNTs film could be controlled. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were successfully coated on the various substrates using the EPD method. A highly uniform CNTs microstructure film with thickness over 5 µm was achieved. In addition, the selective depositions of CNTs on the pre-defined bond pads to form CNTs bumps were also accomplished. By employing typical flip-chip bonding technique, high density CNTs bumps were aligned to form a test chip/host substrate interconnects. The electrical conductivity of the CNTs interconnects was carried out using four-point probe measurement. Reliable electrical contacts with linear relationship in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic suggesting ohmic behaviour were attained. The overall resistances extracted were also relatively low. These superior electrical properties have demonstrated that the CNTs bumps deposited using EPD method is a viable way to serve as an alternative to current metal solder interconnects material such as Sn-Pb alloys. Hence, it offers a promising interconnect application in the quest for device miniaturization in microelectronic industry.

The possibility of modifying the surface properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has stimulated increasing interest in their application as components in biosensors. In this sense, it is possible to employ surface modified MWCNTs as support to immobilize biomaterials such as enzymes. In this study the enzyme tyrosinase was immobilized onto functionalized MWCNTs (fMWCNTs) via covalent bonding and activity of immobilized tyrosinase was measured via electrochemical detection of phenol. MWCNTs were first treated with sulphuric acid and nitric acid with ratio 1 : 3 at 70ºC to introduce carboxylated groups (-COOH). The carboxyl moieties were then activated by treatment with a cross-linker, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) to enable tyrosinase immobilization via amide bonding. FTIR spectra of tyrosinase immobilized fMWCNTs showed the presence of peaks attributing to aliphatic C-N (1382 cm-1) and amide carbonyl (1639 cm-1) vibrations which confirmed successful covalent immobilization of tyrosinase onto fMWCNTs. Electrochemical measurements using tyrosinase-fMWCNTS-CPE revealed increasing limiting current values of reduction peak with increasing phenol concentrations at -200mV. The appearance of the reduction current indicates that the immobilization process retained the biological activity of the covalently bonded tyrosinase on fMWCNTs surface. This study has demonstrated the potential of using MWCNTs as support for enzyme immobilization and their application in biosensor technology.
