Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem and the main cause of death from the infectious diseases worldwide. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), a causative agent of tuberculosis, is the oldest known human pathogen. The only available TB vaccine, BCG, was first administered in 1921 and since then remains the only protecting tool against TB. Yet, its efficacy is limited and there is an urgent need to design and produce a novel vaccine that will protect against this deadly disease in the era of emerging problems with antibiotic resistance. In this review a current, global TB situation is outlined and the characteristics of BCG are presented. Finally, the strategies leading to generation of BCG variants providing improved protecting efficacy are shortly described.

ABSTRACT Tuberculosis is a contagious disease that usually attacks the lungs but sometimes attacks other parts of the body, such as the kidneys, glands, and bones. It is an endemic and major public health problem in Morocco. Tuberculosis is transmitted through the airways via the inhalation of microdroplets containing Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We present here the whole-genome shotgun sequences of three multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis strains isolated from Morocco.

AbstractHuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) coinfection is a serious public health problem. HIV and TB promote each other, accelerating development of HIV to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and heightening TB mortality. Determining interaction mechanism between HIV andMycobacterium tuberculosiscan lead to development of effective treatments. This study summarizes prevalence status of AIDS and TB coinfection and research advances concerning their interaction mechanism.

Tuberculosis constitutes a serious public health problem because it has multi-resistant forms that require treatment that is both difficult and extensive. There is a need to develop new antimycobacterial compounds, and plants represent a source of therapeutic resources. This study analyzed antimycobacterial action in eight extracts from plants found in the Brazilian Cerrado. The results showed significant inhibitory concentrations in relation to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, especially from the extracts of Apuleia molaris and Ouratea spectabilis, both of which presented reduced cytotoxic effects. Fractionation revealed a hexane fraction of A. molaris with significant and promising activity regarding future in vivo assays.

Tuberculosis in childhood differs from the adult clinical form and even has been suggested that it is a different disease due to its differential signs. However, prevention, diagnostics, and therapeutic efforts have been biased toward adult clinical care. Sensibility and specificity of new diagnostic approaches as GeneXpert, electronic nose (E-nose), infrared spectroscopy, accelerated mycobacterial growth induced by magnetism, and flow lateral devices in children populations are needed. Adequate and timely assessment of tuberculosis infection in childhood could diminish epidemiological burden because underdiagnosed pediatric patients can evolve to an active state and have the potential to disseminate the etiological agentMycobacterium tuberculosis, notably increasing this worldwide public health problem.
