Novel environment-friendly near-infrared reflective Y5.2Nd0.8MoO12+σ pigments were fabricated by sol-gel and solid-state reaction routes, and the properties of both pigments were compared. The pigments were characterized by XRD, SEM, CIE-L*a*b* color-measurements, and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy. The results show that pigments obtained by sol-gel routes crystallize completely at 900 °C, much lower than 1300 °C of solid-state reaction routes. Nano-size pigments fabricated by sol-gel routes possess an average grain size of ~ 50 nm, largely finer than 3 μm of solid-state reaction ones. Moreover, the sol-gel processed pigments show a higher near-infrared reflectance than solid-state reaction ones, which are 98.3 % and 91.7 %, respectively, but with a slightly light yellow color hue.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) doped with 3% Yttria-stabilized 20vol%m-ZrO2composite were synthesized by solid state reaction between tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and Ca(OH)2at various temperature(1000 to 1200°C) for 3h with adding 5~20wt% calcium fluoride (CaF2), respectively. The effects of various amount of CaF2on crystallization characteristics of HA-20vol%ZrO2composite were investigated in details. The results show that when small amount of CaF2was added, the reactions of HA with CaF2occurs, which leads to the formation of fluorapatite (FA). With the increasing of the amount of CaF2, the decomposition of HA to β-TCP decreases gradually and the CaZrO3peaks disappear, while t-ZrO2increases because of the formation of thermally stable FHA solid solutions. When the sintered temperature is above 1100°C and the addition of CaF2is about 10wt%, the main phases are FHA and t-ZrO2with a negligible amount of Ca5P8, which suppress the reaction between HA and ZrO2. From SEM, it can be seen that with 10wt% of CaF2addition, the morphology of the composite powder is a mixture of spherical ZrO2particles embedded within agglomerated HA shaped like a small rod.

A near Infrared (NIR) quantum cutting (QC) Sr3AlO4F:Tb3+,Yb3+phosphor was synthesized by the conventional high temperature solid-state reaction. The luminescence spectra both in visible (VIS) and NIR regions and decay lifetime curves of Tb3+have been measured to prove energy transfer (ET) from Tb3+to Yb3+. Quantum efficiency (QE) related to Yb3+concentration was calculated and the highest QE was found to be 135% hen Yb3+doped concentration at 20%. The present Tb3+and Yb3+co-doped Sr3AlO4F phosphor may be a promising candidate to modify the spectral of the solar light.

Yb3+ doped SnO2 nanocrystals were synthesized, using the hydrolytic route in the presence of starch as the size stabilizer. Starting from salt precursors, the nanopowders obtained with various Yb3+ loads are thermally stable up to 600 °C. They were characterized by XRD, solid state NMR, TEM, ICP and TG-MS techniques. The nanocrystal Cassiterite structure, with a size of a few nanometers (<6 nm), was identified by XRD, NMR and Raman measurements confirming a homogeneous dispersion of Yb3+ ions in the lattice. The preliminary assessment of the spectroscopic features of nanocrystals was performed by absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The typical Yb3+ absorption peak, centred at 977 nm, and an intense 2F5/2→ 2F7/2 Yb3+ emission band were observed.
