Abstract This paper studied the inhibitory effects of dithiocyano-methane (DM) on the glucose decomposition pathway in the respiratory metabolism of Escherichia coli. We investigated the effects of DM on the activities of key enzymes (ATPase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, G6PDH), the levels of key product (nicotinamide adenosine denucleotide hydro-phosphoric acid, NADPH), and gene expression in the hexose monophosphate pathway (HMP). The results showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericide concentration (MBC) of DM against the tested strains were 5.86 mg/L and 11.72 mg/L, respectively. Bacteria exposed to DM at MIC demonstrated an increase in bacterial ATPase and G6PDH activities, NADPH levels, and gene expression in the HMP pathway compared to bacteria in the control group, which could be interpreted as a behavioral response to stress introduced by DM. However, DM at a lethal concentration of 10 × MIC affected glucose decomposition by inhibiting mainly the HMP pathway in E. coli.

Alcoholic extract of the stems ofCoscinium fenestratum, a medicinal plant indigenous to India and Sri Lanka used in ayurveda and siddha medicine for treating diabetes, was studied for its carbohydrate metabolism effect and antioxidant status in streptozotocin–nicotinamide induced type 2 diabetic rats. Oral administration ofC. fenestratumstem extract in graded doses caused a significant increase in enzymatic antioxidants such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione synthetase, peroxidase, and glutathione peroxidase and in the nonenzymatic antioxidants ascorbic acid, ceruloplasmin and tocopherol. Effects of alcoholic extract on glycolytic enzymes such as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase and hexokinase showed a significant increase in their levels, whereas a significant decrease was observed in the levels of gluconeogenic enzyme, glucose-6-phosphatase and alanine aminotransferase in treated diabetic rats. Serum creatinine and urea levels also declined significantly. This investigation demonstrates significant antidiabetic activity ofC. fenestratum.


Spermatozoa of the giant octopus, as obtained from ruptured metre-long spermatophores, are only feebly motile. The total length of a spermatozoon is 1/2 mm, most of it due to the tail. The sperm-head, slim and oblong, is composed of a highly condensed nucleus and a cork-screw shaped acrosome. A striking feature, which distinguishes octopus spermatozoa from those of mammals, is the presence of a large amount of glycogen, concentrated mainly around the sperm-head. This, together with the occurrence of high phosphorylase and phosphoghlcomutase activity, indicates that glycogenolysis represents a pathway of carbohydrate metabolism in octopus spermatozoa. Both glucose-6-phosphate isomerase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were demonstrated in extracts of prepared sperm- homogenates, which suggests that octopus spermatozoa may be capable of metabolizing glucose-6-phosphate along the oxidative as well as the glycolytic pathway.
