Introduction Stroke is a major cause of mortality and disability in childhood. There is a false belief that children will recover better than adults and recent research confirms that younger age at injury can have a negative impact on rehabilitation outcomes, resulting in lifelong disability. Self-care is a key rehabilitation outcome for children and young people. Methods This service evaluation reviews routinely collected clinical self-care data from one specialised residential rehabilitation centre in the United Kingdom. Admission and discharge scores from the United Kingdom Functional Independence Measure +Functional Assessment Measure, Rehabilitation Complexity Scale – E and Northwick Park Nursing Dependency Scale were analysed. Results Twenty-six children and young people age 8 years and over with severe stroke were included. Mean scores of independence increased and mean scores of complexity and dependency decreased. A proportion of the sample had ongoing self-care needs in relation to support needed in washing, dressing and bathing. A small number remained highly dependent, requiring assistance from two carers. Conclusion Children and young people make significant gains in self-care independence during specialised rehabilitation. However, a proportion return to the community with high self-care needs. Occupational therapists and the wider care team should address ongoing self-care needs in this population.

This article examines the branded persona of Ella Mills, founder of the multi-platform, multi-product and multi-million pound food brand Deliciously Ella. It begins from the premise that Mills represents a new kind of cultural intermediary: that of the wellness entrepreneur. Through a discourse analysis of Mills’ own media productions alongside news and magazine features about the entrepreneur, I consider how ‘healthy eating’ is being sold to young women as a means to realise physical and financial empowerment. Commercial entrepreneurship is made to function in tandem with health entrepreneurship, as Mills makes it her business to model a healthy lifestyle and enjoins others to follow this example. The article further examines how the Deliciously Ella narrative perpetuates already dominant understandings of health as a private good and personal responsibility through its emphasis on healing and recovery through food. Relating this analysis to recent debates about the shifting terrain of postfeminism in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, I argue that the spotlighting of Mills elevates self-care as a gendered imperative while obfuscating the classed and racialised privileges that attend this.

Music Therapists face significant stressors at work which, if not adequately addressed, could lead to stress and burnout. Against the background of a final-year dissertation, this article discusses how Music Therapists use self-care to manage occupational stressors. While the small-scale qualitative research project focussed on how Music Therapists working in hospices in the United Kingdom manage work-related stressors, analysis of the data revealed themes which, it is suggested, seem to apply to the wider music therapy community. Findings indicate that Music Therapists would be well-advised to develop and use self-care strategies to mitigate work-related stressors and thus reduce the potential for ill-health. The article seeks to inform the practice of Music Therapists and concludes with the author’s recommendations.

This chapter introduces the idea of cabinet government as a way of doing business in executive government. Even though often written off as no longer functional, it still survives, even if there is no single job description. This chapter introduces the three key questions of the book: ➢ What dilemmas do cabinet governments face? ➢ In what way do they differ across countries? ➢ Why is there a common thread to all systems despite different constitutional and institutional architecture? The chapter examines the different approaches to cabinet government: constitutional, institutional, public administration, and policy analysis. It explains why the authors adopted an interpretivist approach where traditions and beliefs shape the choices of individuals. The chapter identifies the common dilemmas that must be managed in all political systems: the process, political, policy, leadership, and accountability dilemmas. It also identifies the five examples of cabinet government systems the book considers: the United Kingdom, Australia, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

With their central position in society as facilitators of information, schools and teachers play a key role in the articulation and embedding of government-driven policy targeted at school-age children; under the British government, this key role extends beyond the borders, to British Schools Overseas. In the last decade, this has been especially prevalent in the dissemination of anti-terrorism rhetoric and policy, created to prevent the radicalisation of students; most recently, this has involved the inclusion of ‘fundamental British values’ (FBV) in policy and curriculum. Using the work of Basil Bernstein and, in particular, the model of transmission context which sits within his theories on pedagogic discourse, this paper analyses the discourse embedded in multiple FBV policies. Through a focus on classification and framing of the discourses embedded in the policies, this paper highlights the transmission of power in these policies, with a focus on language used to convey this power; and conveys an understanding of the positioning, role and ‘responsibilisation’ of British schools, located outside of the United Kingdom, as central to FBV education as well as the solution to terrorism in Britain.

Introduction: In October 2018, the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada released a report showing that only 41.1% of international pharmacists pass the Pharmacy Qualifying Examination, compared to 91% of Canadian graduates. When compared to the United Kingdom and United States, Canada has the lowest success rates for the integration of international pharmacists. Aim: This study aims to address two questions: What are the professional pharmacy policies governing the clinical training resources for international pharmacists within their host country? What can Canada learn from other Western countries to facilitate the integration of international pharmacists? Method: A comparative policy analysis was used to draw comparisons between Canada’s regulatory policies governing the pharmacy license to other similar models in the United Kingdom and United States. Results: Upon examining current integration systems in these countries, differences in training period requirements and competencies became apparent. Therefore, the findings suggest that Canadian stakeholders can learn from other models’ legislation, structure, and clinical outcome prospects.
