Coral reef ecosystem is known as an important place to live various types of fish, where coral conditions will affect the diversity and abundance of the fish. In healthy coral reef ecosystems generally can be found many types of fish with high density. This research aims to investigate the diversity and abundance of coral fishes at Saebus Island, East Java. The observation conducted at 4 stations, according to cardinal point by UVS (underwater visual census) methods with belt transect with the visibility of 2,5 m horizontally, and 5 m vertically. The length of transect was 100 m parallel with coastline, with the area of observation is 500 m2. The censuses were conducted at 2 different depths (3 and 10 m). This study found 70 kinds of coral fish originated form 20 family at all stations. These fishes were from 3 different fish categories i.e. 7 target fishes, 13 indicator fishes, and 50 major fishes. Three different fishes that dominated target fish, indicator fish and major fish were Epinephelus fasciatus, Chaetodon baronessa and Aulostomus chinensis, respectively. There was similar value of fish diversity index at two different depths which were 3.635 and 3,623. While uniformity index at the depth of 3m was 0.153 and at 10m was 0.217, and domination index at the depth of 3m was 0.11 and at 10m was 0.167. These values suggest that diversity of coral fish at Saebus island can be categorized as high diversity.

Abstract CCMRS-IPB conducted coral reef rehabilitation at damaged coral reefs around Nyamuk Island. Those artificial reef buildings for rehabilitation gave shelter spaces for reef fish. This research aims to calculate the effect of coral reef-building, which enhances rugosity to the reef fish diversity around the rehabilitation sites. The study was conducted on Nyamuk Island in the Anambas Islands. Reef fish were sampled annually from 2014 to 2019 using the underwater visual census. The Diversity index and non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling were built to discover reef fish diversity, and reef fish species were affected the most. Yearly data shows an escalation number of reef fish abundance and richness at the end of 2019. The major reef fish group is found to have constant diversity throughout the year compared to other functional groups. The target reef fish group came to this rehabilitation ecosystem primarily attracted by nourishment availability. There is a shift in the reef fish diversity from the early year to the project end. Generally, major reef fish groups will be refuged first around the rehabilitation sites, especially territorial types. Target fish groups from herbivorous and carnivorous types will mostly come along after their food availability and location to get around.

Reef fish is one benchmark to determine a coral reef ecosystem's biodiversity. Reef fish communities are important in coral reef ecosystems because of their trophic relationships with other biotic components. The aim of this study was to determine the biodiversity of reef fish on Halang Melingkau Island, Kotabaru District, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. This research was conducted in March-August 2019. Coral reef fish data were collected using an underwater visual census method. Transects were applied as close as possible to the substrate using a 50 m roll-up measuring tape. Three transects were applied at each station. A total of 98 reef fish species from 19 families were recorded in this study. The fish community in Halang Melingkau island belongs to the family of Pomacentridae, Labridae, Chaetodontidae, Scaridae, Haemulidae, Lutjanidae, Scolopsidae, Serranidae, Caesionidae, Holocentridae, Siganidae, Pomacanthidae, Apogonidae, Pempheridae, Scorpaenidae, Tetraodontidae, Blenniidae, Platacidae, and Zanclidae. The highest abundance of reef fish was 1.88 ind/m2, and the lowest was 0.14 ind/m2. The dominance index (C) ranged from 0.03 to 0.13, the homogeneity index (E') ranged from 0.72 and 0.94, and the diversity index (H') ranged from 2.17 to 3.53. Water quality data measurements of temperature, brightness, current speed, pH, and DO (Dissolved Oxygen) were within the tolerance limits of water quality standards based on the Minister of Environment Decree No. 51 of 2004, Republic of Indonesia.

The Xisha Islands are composed of the Yongle Islands and the Xuande Islands in Hainan province, China. It has one of the highest species diversities in the world and is also a typical oceanic distribution area of coral reefs globally. The ichthyofauna of the Xisha Islands were recorded by underwater visual census in May 2019 and July 2020. The survey data were combined with previous records of species into the checklist of the Xisha Islands presented herein. A total of 691 species belonging to 24 orders and 97 families was recorded. The major families were Labridae, Pomacentridae, Serranidae, Chaetodontidae, Hexanchidae, Lutjanidae, Scaridae, Gobiidae, Scorpaenidae, and Carangidae. In this study, the coral fish diversity index (CFDI) of six families (Chaetodontidae, Pomacanthidae, Pomacentridae, Labridae, Scaridae, and Acanthuridae) was 229, indicating 756 coral fishes. In terms of the IUCN Red List, one species is Critically Endangered (Glyphis gangeticus), six species are Endangered (Stegostoma fasciatum, Aetomylaeus maculatus, Aetomylaeus vespertilio, Epinephelus akaara, Cheilinusundulatus sp., and Xiphias gladius), 16 species are Vulnerable, and 13 species are Near Threatened in the Xisha Archipelago, so conservation should be strengthened in this area in the future. One species is a new record for China (Dischistodus pseudochrysopoecilus) and 23 species are newly found in the Xisha Islands.

AbstractParrotfish (Family Scaridae) are a family of herbivorous fishes crucial to coral reef health, particularly for Caribbean reefs due to their declining coral cover. However, despite parrotfish are fully protected in some countries, they are still heavy fished in most of their Caribbean range. The consequences of this targeted fishery in the Colombian Caribbean are not fully understood due to a lack of local conservation and management resources. This research aimed to evaluate and enhance the conservation status and protection of parrotfish among local communities in the National Natural Park Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo. Underwater visual census surveys (UVC) were undertaken to evaluate reef fish community structure, and participatory education campaigns and activities were carried out with local communities to raise awareness about parrotfish ecology and their functional role in conserving Caribbean coral reef ecosystems of Colombia. UVC showed parrotfish to be dominant in the fish community, yet there was evidence of exploitation of large adults by selective fishing. Conflicts exist between the community and environmental authorities because fishing regulations are not clear, and the level of enforcement is insufficient. Parrotfish are sold to tourists, as ‘red snapper’ to fulfil high seafood demand since commercially valuable fish are now scarce. However, following intensive awareness-raising activities developed as part of this study, the community has started to recognize the vital ecological role of parrotfish in coral reef systems, and are suggesting a redrafting of fishing legislation by the environmental authorities, in order to recognise and incorporate the traditional fishing rights of human communities living within the MPA. Lobbying for the protection of parrotfish and inclusion of local communities in decision-making will take time, but this research represents the crucial first steps towards sustainable practice and cooperative alliances in the Colombian Caribbean.

Abstrak Echinodermata berperan penting pada ekosistem terumbu karang sebagai bagian dari jejaring makanan. Mereka dapat bersifat herbivora, karnivora, dan/atau omnivora. Kerusakan terumbu karang di Pantai Meras akhir-akhir ini dapat mengancam Echinodermata. Informasi tentang diversitas Echinodermata di Pantai Meras masih sedikit. Oleh karena itu, penelitian tentang diversitas Echinodermata perlu dilakukan di Pantai Meras, Kecamatan Bunaken, Sulawesi Utara. Pengambilan sampel pada tiap lokasi dilakukan pada saat surut terendah dengan menarik 3 garis transek (masing-masing 100 meter) secara vertikal dari garis pantai ke arah laut. Petak kuadrat (1 x 1 meter) diletakkan dengan jarak antar kuadrat yaitu 10 meter. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Echinodermata hidup pada habitat padang lamun, pasir dan terumbu karang baik yang hidup maupun mati. Total species yang ditemukan yaitu 8 spesies yang termasuk anggota dari 3 kelas. Kelas Asteroidea (bintang laut) sebanyak 3 spesies, Echinoidea sebanyak 4 spesies dan Kelas Holothuroidea sebanyak 1 spesies. Diversitas Echinodermata di Pantai Meras adalah antara rendah hingga sedang dengan nilai indeks diversitas Shannon-Wiener (H’) berkisar antara 0,48 – 1,31. They may be herbivores, carnivores, and/or omnivores. Coral reefs destruction in Meras Beach lately can threaten Echinoderms. There was little information about Echinoderms diversity of Meras Beach. Therefore, research on Echinoderms diversity needs to be done on the Meras Beach, Bunaken District, North Sulawesi. Sampling was carried out at each location at the lowest tide. There were 3 line transects (each 100 meters) located vertically from the shoreline towards the sea. The square plots (1 x 1 meter) placed distance between plots was 10 meters. The results showed that Echinoderms occupied different habitat i.e. sea grass, sand, live and/or coral reefs. Total species found 8 species belong to members of the 3 classes. Asteroidea Class (starfish),  Echinoidea Class and Holothuroidea were respectively 3 species, 4 species and 1 species. Echinoderms diversity on the Meras Beach were low to moderate with Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H ') was 0.48 to 1.31. This study aims to determine the distribution and abundance of reef fish in coral reef waters of Sub District Maba and was conducted at 10 stations. Data were collected by conducting visual census on the 50-meter transect line at 5 meters depth. In addition to revealing the number of species and abundance of coral fishes, data were analyzed to determine the diversity index (Shannon-Wiener). Based on field observations, most of the reef fishes  found in the Sub-district of Maba surrounding waters are being categorized to have less potential category (50%);  fair potential (41.67%); potential (8:33%); and  there is no population being classified in very potential category. Several locations have the potential reef fish condition were Jara-jara Cape, Gee Island, and Para-para Island.  Based on the existence of the target species population, in term of species richness and abundance, it is assumed that largely dominated by the target fish species that has low economic value. On the other hand target fish that has high economic value only consists of few species such as grouper, jacks, sweetlips, and snappers.   Keywords : coral fishes,  coral reef, sub district maba ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui distribusi dan kelimpahan ikan karang di perairan terumbu karang Kecamatan Maba. Selain mengungkapkan jumlah spesies dan kelimpahan individu, analisis data diarahkan untuk mengetahui indeks keanekeragaman (Shannon-Wiener).  Berdasarkan hasil pengamatan, sebagian besar sumberdaya ikan karang di wilayah Kecamatan Maba, telah masuk dalam kategori kurang potensial (50 %); cukup potensial (41,67 %); potensial (8.33%); dan tidak ada yang tergolong dalam kategori sangat potensial.  Lokasi-lokasi yang memiliki kondisi ikan karang yang potensial,  Tanjung Jara-jara, Pulau Gee, dan Pulau  Para-para. Keberadaan populasi spesies target, baik kekayaan spesies maupun kelimpahan individu, ternyata sebagian besar didominasi oleh jenis ikan target yang bernilai ekonomi/pasar rendah.  Beberapa jenis ikan yang memiliki nilai ekonimis penting ditemukan  seperti, kerapu, Sweetlips (bibir manis), Bobara, dan kakap. Damage to coral reef ecosystems is a major problem on the islands of Gili Air and Gili Trawangan. This will have an impact on the presence of reef fish in the area. This study aims to look how much relation caused by associated between live coral cover and reef fish in Gili Air and Gili Trawangan island.. This research method using Line Intersept Transect (LIT), Underwater Visual Census and simple linear regression analysis to know the relation. The percentage of coral cover on Gili Air Island and Gili Trawangan Island on reef flats (1-5 m) is 11.75% and 11.67% respectively, on the reef slopes (6-10 m) the percentage is 50.4% and 48.9%. In addition we observed the existence of 11 families reef fish. The abundance of reef fish on Gili Air and Gili Trawangan islands on reefs flat with an average of 0,406 ind / m2 and 0,137 ind / m2, on the reef slope on average - respectively 0,434 ind / m2 and 0,274 ind / m2. The determinant value in Southern part of both island indicates a value close to +1 and in Northern part of both island indicates a value close to -1.

Penelitian yang dilakukan pada bulan Juni 2004 ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan data dan informasi ikanikan yang hidup dan berasosiasi dengan karang serta memprediksi faktor-faktor penghambat yang mempengaruhi keberadaan di wilayah perairan pulau-pulau kecil di Kalimantan Barat.Metode yang digunakan adalah sensus visual pada transek garis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jumlah jenis ikan karang berkisar antara 36 sampai dengan 51 jenis dengan kepadatan antara 10 sampai dengan 15 individu per m2. Rata-rata untuk Indeks keanekaragaman jenis (H), Indeks Dominasi (D), Indeks Keseimbangan (E), dan Irian Jaya Reef Diversity Index masing-masing 2,7; 0,1; 0,7; dan 4,5. Persentase ikan kelompok mayor rata-rata 66%, kelompok ikan target 19%, dan kelompok ikan indikator 15%. Sedangkan rata-rata persentase penggolongan ikan berdasarkan pada nilai ekonomi 66% ikan ekonomis rendah, 17% ikan ekonomis sedang, dan 17% ikan ekonomis tinggi. Faktor pembatas distribusi ikan adalah kekeruhan air yang cukup tinggi yang disebabkan oleh sedimen dari daratan. A study conducted in June 2004 aims to obtain data and information of fish living on and associating to coral reefs, and also to assume limitting factors for fish distribution. A sampling method used was visual census on a transect line. The result shows that the number of coral fish ranged from 36 to 51 species. The density of coral fish ranged from 10 to 15 indivdual per m2. The means of Diversity Indeces (H), Dominance Indeces (D), Eveness Indeces, and Irian Jaya Reef Diversity Index indeces were 2.7; 0.1; 0.7; and 4.5, respectively. The percentages of a major fish group, a target fish group, and an indicator fish group were average of 66, 19, and 15%, respectively. The mean percentages of marketable based fish groups consisted of 66% of low valuable fishes, 17% of fair valuable fishes, and 17% of high valuable fishes. The low level of body water transfarancy due to upland sediment was a limitting factor for the attendance of coral fish in the coral reef area of study sites.

Redang Islands Marine Park consists of nine islands in the state of Terengganu, Malaysia. Redang Island is one of the largest off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, which is famous for its crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches. The ichthyofauna of the Redang archipelago was surveyed by underwater visual observations between August 2016 and May 2018. Census data were compiled with existing records into the checklist of the marine fish of the Redang archipelago presented herein. A total of 314 species belonging to 51 families were recorded. The most speciose families (Pomacentridae, Labridae, Scaridae, Serranidae, Apogonidae, Carangidae, Gobiidae, Chaetodontidae, Lutjanidae, Nemipteridae and Siganidae) were also amongst the most speciose at the neighbouring Tioman archipelago (except Chaetodontidae). The coral fish diversity index value for the six families of coral reef fishes (Chaetodontidae, Pomacanthidae, Pomacentridae, Labridae, Scaridae and Acanthuridae) of the study sites was 132. We estimated that there were 427 coral reef fish species in the Redang archipelago. According to the IUCN Red List, eight species are Near Threatened (Carcharhinus melanopterus, Chaetodon trifascialis, Choerodon schoenleinii, Epinephelus fuscoguttatus, E. polyphekadion, Plectropomus leopardus, Taeniura lymma and Triaenodon obesus), eleven are Vulnerable (Bolbometopon muricatum, Chaetodon trifasciatus, Chlorurus sordidus, Dascyllus trimaculatus, Epinephelus fuscoguttatus, E. polyphekadion, Halichoeres marginatus, Heniochus acuminatus, Nebrius ferrugineus, Neopomacentrus cyanomos and Plectropomus areolatus) and three are Endangered (Amphiprion clarkia, Cheilinus undulatus and Scarus ghobban) in the Redang archipelago. Five species are new records for Malaysia (Ctenogobiops mitodes, Epibulus brevis, Halichoeres erdmanni, H. richmondi and Scarus caudofasciatus) and 25 species are newly recorded in the Redang archipelago.

The aims of this study, 1). To find out the number of species and the abundance of coral fishes; 2). To find out the biomasssa of target fish in carnivorous and herbivorous groups. Data collection was carried out at 5 meters depth using the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method. The area observation is 150 m2. Coralivorous fish are found with 8 species and are categorized as medium. 28 species of target fish were found from carnivorous fish (13 species), and herbivorous fish (15 species).  For total individual number that is 81 individuals and a density that is 3240 individuals/Ha. The highest number of individuals is found in herbivorous fish. The high value of the ecological index shows the stability of the community and the ability of the environment that allows species of fish to grow and develop in their habitat. The target fish is generally in the class size of 16-20 cm and 21-25 cm. In general, reef fish from the group of herbivores are most commonly found in this location.Keywords: Coral Fishes, Likupang Kampung Ambong ABSTRAK Tujuan penelitian, yaitu 1). Luas areal pengamatan adalah 150 m2.   Ikan koralivora yang ditemukan berjumlah 8 spesies dan dikategorikan sedang.  Ditemukan 28 jenis ikan target dari ikan karnivora (13 spesies), dan ikan herbivora (15 spesies).  Untuk kelimpahan individu total yaitu 81 individu dan densitas 3240 individu/Ha.  Jumlah individu tertinggi ditemukan pada ikan herbivora.  Tingginya nilai indeks ekologi menunjukkan kemantapan komunitas dan kemampuan lingkungan yang memungkinkan jenis-jenis ikan untuk bertahan dan berkembang pada habitatnya.  Ikan target umumnya pada kelas ukuran 16 - 20 cm dan 21 – 25 cm.  Pada umumnya ikan karang dari kelompok herbivora yang paling banyak ditemukan di lokasi ini. Kata Kunci: Ikan Karang, Likupang Kampung Ambong, Biomassa
