Penelitian yang dilakukan pada bulan Juni 2004 ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan data dan informasi ikanikan yang hidup dan berasosiasi dengan karang serta memprediksi faktor-faktor penghambat yang mempengaruhi keberadaan di wilayah perairan pulau-pulau kecil di Kalimantan Barat.Metode yang digunakan adalah sensus visual pada transek garis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jumlah jenis ikan karang berkisar antara 36 sampai dengan 51 jenis dengan kepadatan antara 10 sampai dengan 15 individu per m2. Rata-rata untuk Indeks keanekaragaman jenis (H), Indeks Dominasi (D), Indeks Keseimbangan (E), dan Irian Jaya Reef Diversity Index masing-masing 2,7; 0,1; 0,7; dan 4,5. Persentase ikan kelompok mayor rata-rata 66%, kelompok ikan target 19%, dan kelompok ikan indikator 15%. Sedangkan rata-rata persentase penggolongan ikan berdasarkan pada nilai ekonomi 66% ikan ekonomis rendah, 17% ikan ekonomis sedang, dan 17% ikan ekonomis tinggi. Faktor pembatas distribusi ikan adalah kekeruhan air yang cukup tinggi yang disebabkan oleh sedimen dari daratan. A study conducted in June 2004 aims to obtain data and information of fish living on and associating to coral reefs, and also to assume limitting factors for fish distribution. A sampling method used was visual census on a transect line. The result shows that the number of coral fish ranged from 36 to 51 species. The density of coral fish ranged from 10 to 15 indivdual per m2. The means of Diversity Indeces (H), Dominance Indeces (D), Eveness Indeces, and Irian Jaya Reef Diversity Index indeces were 2.7; 0.1; 0.7; and 4.5, respectively. The percentages of a major fish group, a target fish group, and an indicator fish group were average of 66, 19, and 15%, respectively. The mean percentages of marketable based fish groups consisted of 66% of low valuable fishes, 17% of fair valuable fishes, and 17% of high valuable fishes. The low level of body water transfarancy due to upland sediment was a limitting factor for the attendance of coral fish in the coral reef area of study sites.

Coral reef ecosystem is known as an important place to live various types of fish, where coral conditions will affect the diversity and abundance of the fish. In healthy coral reef ecosystems generally can be found many types of fish with high density. This research aims to investigate the diversity and abundance of coral fishes at Saebus Island, East Java. The observation conducted at 4 stations, according to cardinal point by UVS (underwater visual census) methods with belt transect with the visibility of 2,5 m horizontally, and 5 m vertically. The length of transect was 100 m parallel with coastline, with the area of observation is 500 m2. The censuses were conducted at 2 different depths (3 and 10 m). This study found 70 kinds of coral fish originated form 20 family at all stations. These fishes were from 3 different fish categories i.e. 7 target fishes, 13 indicator fishes, and 50 major fishes. Three different fishes that dominated target fish, indicator fish and major fish were Epinephelus fasciatus, Chaetodon baronessa and Aulostomus chinensis, respectively. There was similar value of fish diversity index at two different depths which were 3.635 and 3,623. While uniformity index at the depth of 3m was 0.153 and at 10m was 0.217, and domination index at the depth of 3m was 0.11 and at 10m was 0.167. These values suggest that diversity of coral fish at Saebus island can be categorized as high diversity.

This study aims to determine the distribution and abundance of reef fish in coral reef waters of Sub District Maba and was conducted at 10 stations. Data were collected by conducting visual census on the 50-meter transect line at 5 meters depth. In addition to revealing the number of species and abundance of coral fishes, data were analyzed to determine the diversity index (Shannon-Wiener). Based on field observations, most of the reef fishes  found in the Sub-district of Maba surrounding waters are being categorized to have less potential category (50%);  fair potential (41.67%); potential (8:33%); and  there is no population being classified in very potential category. Several locations have the potential reef fish condition were Jara-jara Cape, Gee Island, and Para-para Island.  Based on the existence of the target species population, in term of species richness and abundance, it is assumed that largely dominated by the target fish species that has low economic value. On the other hand target fish that has high economic value only consists of few species such as grouper, jacks, sweetlips, and snappers.   Keywords : coral fishes,  coral reef, sub district maba ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui distribusi dan kelimpahan ikan karang di perairan terumbu karang Kecamatan Maba. Selain mengungkapkan jumlah spesies dan kelimpahan individu, analisis data diarahkan untuk mengetahui indeks keanekeragaman (Shannon-Wiener).  Berdasarkan hasil pengamatan, sebagian besar sumberdaya ikan karang di wilayah Kecamatan Maba, telah masuk dalam kategori kurang potensial (50 %); cukup potensial (41,67 %); potensial (8.33%); dan tidak ada yang tergolong dalam kategori sangat potensial.  Lokasi-lokasi yang memiliki kondisi ikan karang yang potensial,  Tanjung Jara-jara, Pulau Gee, dan Pulau  Para-para. Keberadaan populasi spesies target, baik kekayaan spesies maupun kelimpahan individu, ternyata sebagian besar didominasi oleh jenis ikan target yang bernilai ekonomi/pasar rendah.  Beberapa jenis ikan yang memiliki nilai ekonimis penting ditemukan  seperti, kerapu, Sweetlips (bibir manis), Bobara, dan kakap. Abstract CCMRS-IPB conducted coral reef rehabilitation at damaged coral reefs around Nyamuk Island. Those artificial reef buildings for rehabilitation gave shelter spaces for reef fish. This research aims to calculate the effect of coral reef-building, which enhances rugosity to the reef fish diversity around the rehabilitation sites. The study was conducted on Nyamuk Island in the Anambas Islands. Reef fish were sampled annually from 2014 to 2019 using the underwater visual census. The Diversity index and non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling were built to discover reef fish diversity, and reef fish species were affected the most. Yearly data shows an escalation number of reef fish abundance and richness at the end of 2019. The major reef fish group is found to have constant diversity throughout the year compared to other functional groups. The target reef fish group came to this rehabilitation ecosystem primarily attracted by nourishment availability. There is a shift in the reef fish diversity from the early year to the project end. Generally, major reef fish groups will be refuged first around the rehabilitation sites, especially territorial types. Target fish groups from herbivorous and carnivorous types will mostly come along after their food availability and location to get around.

<p>Humans have utilized landscape for  produces a diverse character of the wider area of the watershed. Agroforestry is a land management system in addressing the problems that arise due to changes in land use of soil and water conservation. The aim of the study was to analyze plant diversity in agroforestry practices that have services in the Krueng watershed landscape in Aceh watershed. Develop strategies in the Krueng Aceh DAS agroforestry service. This research was conducted in the upper, middle and downstream of the Krueng Aceh watershed, with a rapid method of Agro-Biodiversity Appraisal and SWOT. The results showed that the composition of the vegetation structure found in the study sites tended to vary with the diversity index of agroforestry that was currently in the upstream and middle of the Krueng Aceh watershed. Based on SWOT analysis, internal scores are 2.45 and external scores are 3.21. Agroforestry practices in the upper stream of Krueng Aceh watershed were dominated by <em>Aleurites moluccana</em>, <em>Areca cathecu</em>, and  <em>Averrhoa bilimbi</em> L  species with the highest INP in the upper stream of Krueng Aceh watershed. Vegetation at the middle stream of Krueng Aceh watershed dominated by <em>Areca cathecu,</em> <em>Lansium domesticum</em> and Musa<em> paradisiaca</em>.  </p>

The zoobenthos samples were collected in 30 collecting sections from 02nd to 13th June and from 02nd to 13th October 2014. Investigation of species compositon of zoobenthos in coastal areas, Thai Binh province was identified 72 species belonging to 56 genera of 33 families, 14 orders, 4 classes (Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Crustacea, Polychaeta), 3 phyla (Mollusca, Arthropoda, Annelida). In particular, Mollusca was by far the most popular with 46 species, accounting for roughly 63.8%, compared to the figure of Arthropoda was 23 species, occupying approximately 31.9%, Annelida was 3 species, occupying approximately 4.3%. The density of zoobenthos at the sampling sites averaged from 17 to 420 individuals/m2. The Shannon-Weiner (H') diversity index at the study sites averaged from 2.13 to 3.63.

This research was conducted to evaluate the fish distribution and biodiversity within three types of swamp ecosystem with different water sources in Pampangan Sub-district during July to December 2011. The field observation were conducted in three different types of swamp. Ecological data and samples were collected from three sampling points in each swamp type. Parameters including local distribution, diversity index, similarity index, evenness and species richness, were analyzed. The results show a number of 9,723 fishes corresponding to 46 species were collected, the fish categorized into 16 families belonging to five orders. Eight species were found in all type of swamps i.e. <em>Mystus nemurus</em>, <em>Channa striata</em>, <em>Cyclocheilchthys apogon</em>, <em>Cyclocheilichthys armatus</em>, <em>Pristolepis fasciata</em>, <em>Puntius lineatus</em>, <em>Osteochillus hasselti</em>, and <em>Trichogaster pectoralis</em>. A diversity index of fishes in Pampangan Swamp ranged from 2.31 to 2.85, indicating moderate values. The evenness index was high more than 50%. The highest similarity was found between type 1 and type 3 of (0.43). The highest diversity index (2.85) found in type 2 of swamp indicates the swamp in more stable condition.

This study was carried out at Ny-Ålesund on Spitsbergen in Svalbard (High Arctic). Eight study sites were established along a transect from the fjord to the snout of the glacier. The sites differed from each other by the type of vegetation cover and soil characteristics. Soil samples were collected and placed in Tullgren funnels. Extracted arthropods were represented by two groups of mites (Mesostigmata and Oribatida) and springtails (Collembola). The pioneer species that occurred first after retreat of the glacier were representatives of the Collembola (Agrenia bidenticulata and Hypogastrura concolor). Later, other springtails appeared including Folsomia alpha, Folsomia quadrioculata, Hypogastrura concolor, Isotoma anglicana, Sminthurinus concolor and the first species of oribatid mites; Camisia foveolata and Tectocepheus velatus velatus. Arthropod communities recorded along the transect were characterized by large variations in both species composition and abundance of individuals. The greater the distance from the glacier snout, the greater the species richness (2 to 22 species). The mean number of species per sample was the lowest at site 8 (1 ± 0.71) (the closest to the glacier) and greatest at site 1 (14 ± 1.41) (furthest from the glacier). The Simpson’s diversity index (D) was distinctly greater at sites 1 (4.61 ± 0.06) and 3 (3.94 ± 0.11) than at other sites, especially site 8 (1.07 ± 0.06). Densities were least in the samples closest to the glacier (30 to 101 individuals; density 3000–10,100 individuals/m2). At the other locations, abundance was highly variable (905 to 7432 individuals; density 90,500–743,200 individuals/m2). The mean abundances were greatest at sites 2 and 3. The great variations in total abundances observed were often due to the presence or absence of one or more dominant species exhibiting extreme abundance variability between sites. The microarthropod community of the High Arctic is composed of heterogeneous circumpolar species, yet on a landscape scale is extremely dependent on local environmental conditions which may be subject to rapid change.

ABSTRACT Background Maternal dietary restriction and supplementation of one-carbon (1C) metabolites can impact offspring growth and DNA methylation. However, longitudinal research of 1C metabolite and amino acid (AA) concentrations over the reproductive cycle of human pregnancy is limited. Objective To investigate longitudinal 1C metabolite and AA concentrations prior to and during pregnancy and the effects of a small-quantity lipid-based nutrition supplement (LNS) containing &gt;20 micronutrients and prepregnancy BMI (ppBMI). Methods This study was an ancillary study of the Women First Trial (NCT01883193, clinicaltrials.gov) focused on a subset of Guatemalan women (n = 134), 49% of whom entered pregnancy with a BMI ≥25 kg/m2. Ninety-five women received LNS during pregnancy (+LNS group), while the remainder did not (−LNS group). A subset of women from the Pakistan study site (n = 179) were used as a replication cohort, 124 of whom received LNS. Maternal blood was longitudinally collected on dried blood spot (DBS) cards at preconception, and at 12 and 34 wk gestation. A targeted metabolomics assay was performed on DBS samples at each time point using LC-MS/MS. Longitudinal analyses were performed using linear mixed modeling to investigate the influence of time, LNS, and ppBMI. Results Concentrations of 23 of 27 metabolites, including betaine, choline, and serine, changed from preconception across gestation after application of a Bonferroni multiple testing correction (P &lt; 0.00185). Sixteen of those metabolites showed similar changes in the replication cohort. Asymmetric and symmetric dimethylarginine were decreased by LNS in the participants from Guatemala. Only tyrosine was statistically associated with ppBMI at both study sites. Conclusions Time influenced most 1C metabolite and AA concentrations with a high degree of similarity between the 2 diverse study populations. These patterns were not significantly altered by LNS consumption or ppBMI. Future investigations will focus on 1C metabolite changes associated with infant outcomes, including DNA methylation. Coastal areas of Biak Island consist of three major ecosystems: the mangrove, seagrass beds, and coral reefs where a variety of molluscs live. Mollusc diversity in South Biak waters was investigated in September 2011. The observation was conducted at 4 locations, i.e. Paray, Ambroben, Yenures, and Sorido with 2 stations at each location. The study aimed to obtain information on the diversity and community structure of the benthic molluscs (gastropods and bivalves) on the coastal areas of South Biak waters. Sampling method applied was quadrate-transect line in intertidal areas from inshore to offshore. The molluscs (epifauna and infauna) found inside the quadrate-transect were counted and identified. The result showed high benthic mollusc diversity with a total of 94 species, consisting of 75 species of gastropods and 19 species of bivalves. The most widespread gastropod found in all stations was Nassarius sp., while for bivalves was Tellina sp. The highest value of diversity index (H) was 2.96 found in Paray 1 and the lowest was 0.58 in Yenures 1. The Evenness index (E) and Simpson index (D) ranged from 0.27 to 0.96 and from 0.06 to 0.72 respectively. Species richness (d) ranged from 2.89 to 6.84 and similarity index from 3.90 to 42.40.

The ‘dehesas’ are important and vast agro-silvo-pastoral systems typical of the Iberian Peninsula that are undergoing a crisis due to their low economic profitability and environmental degradation. Thus, it is necessary to identify effective tools that provide a reliable idea of the status of these ecosystems as a starting point for future measures of conservation. In this study we analyse the possible role of ants as surrogates for epigeic arthropods, a common biodiversity indicator group. A total of 15 farms were sampled throughout Sierra Morena (Andalusia, Spain) with pitfall traps, both for the ‘dehesa’ habitats themselves and for different microhabitats within the study sites. First, we achieve a complete list of the species of ants of the area. The results indicate that the ‘dehesa’ habitats were very homogenous for all farms, while microhabitats showed differences in species richness and ant communities’ composition compared to the ‘dehesas’. To evaluate the role of ants as surrogates, the number of traps occupied by each order of arthropod and by each ant species was compared. We found a high correlation between them what confirm the surrogate character of ants for the rest of arthropods in these ecosystems.
