In this paper, the static mechanical properties of a spherical magnetically suspending rotor are studied based on the finite element analysis method. The structure of the spherical magnetically suspending rotor is designed. The characteristics of the spherical magnetically suspending rotor are analysed and the necessity of static analysis is pointed out. The main content and general flow of statics analysis are discussed. The two working modes (GUI mode and command flow mode based on APDL) of the finite element software ANSYS are compared and analysed. Then the finite element model of the spherical magnetically suspending rotor is established by the command flow method, and the detailed modelling steps are given. On this basis, the static characteristics of the spherical magnetically suspending rotor are simulated and analysed. The simulation results show that the maximum equivalent stress and rigid body displacement of the rotor are within the safety threshold at a design speed of 10000rpm.

Q43Y-85D type crocodile hydraulic clipping machine was taken as research object to optimization design. A finite element model for clipping machine was built using shell unit as fundamental unit. ANSYS12.0 finite element method was used to analyze the deformation and stress distribution of the shear platform model of hydraulic clipping machine. The result showed that the maximum equivalent stress at the dangerous area was 368.162 MPa and the maximum elastic strain was 0.1814×10-2 mm. After the structural optimization design, it was found that the maximum equivalent stress decreased to 186.238 MPa which did not exceed the material’s yield limitation 215 MPa and the maximum elastic strain decreased to 0.919×10-3 mm which satisfied the requirement of stiffness.

Axially heavy-loaded screw pairs are widely used in rolling mill press systems and other heavy equipment. During the working process, the nut is pressed at both ends, which causes equivalent stress at the thread roots in a U-shaped distribution along the height. Thread roots at the ends tend to suffer fracture failure when the equivalent stress is too great. In this article, the finite element software ANSYS is used to establish a 3D model of screw pairs and analyse bearing characteristics. A new structure based on the results of finite element analysis, which improves U-shaped stress distribution, is proposed for the axially uniform-loaded nut, with a different strain–displacement relationship between the nut matrix and the thread teeth. Such a relationship can greatly reduce peak stress at the thread roots of the nut on both ends. Experiments are conducted on the nut using the electrometric method. Results are compared with the finite element results to directly verify the reliability of the finite element model of ordinary screw pairs and indirectly verify the reliability of the structural model of new screw pairs.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to realize the lightweight of connecting rod and meet the requirements of low energy consumption and vibration. Based on the structural design of the original connecting rod, the finite element analysis was conducted to reduce the weight and increase the natural frequencies, so as to reduce materials consumption and improve the energy efficiency of internal combustion engine. Design/methodology/approach The finite element analysis, structural optimization design and topology optimization of the connecting rod are applied. Efficient hybrid method is deployed: static and modal analysis; and structure re-design of the connecting rod based on topology optimization. Findings After the optimization of the connecting rod, the weight is reduced from 1.7907 to 1.4875 kg, with a reduction of 16.93%. The maximum equivalent stress of the optimized connecting rod is 183.97 MPa and that of the original structure is 217.18 MPa, with the reduction of 15.62%. The first, second and third natural frequencies of the optimized connecting rod are increased by 8.89%, 8.85% and 11.09%, respectively. Through the finite element analysis and based on the lightweight, the maximum equivalent stress is reduced and the low-order natural frequency is increased. Originality/value This paper presents an optimization method on the connecting rod structure. Based on the statics and modal analysis of the connecting rod and combined with the topology optimization, the size of the connecting rod is improved, and the static and dynamic characteristics of the optimized connecting rod are improved.

Thanks to its greater flexibility and biocompatibility with human tissue, superelastic NiTi alloys have taken an important part in the market of orthodontic wires. However, wire fractures and superelasticity losses are notified after a few months from being fixed in the teeth. This behavior is due to the hydrogen presence in the oral cavity, which brittles the NiTi arch wire. In this article, a diffusion-mechanical coupled model is presented while considering the hydrogen influences on the NiTi superelasticity. The model is integrated in ABAQUS finite element software via a UMAT subroutine. Additionally, a finite element model of a deflected orthodontic NiTi wire within three teeth brackets is simulated in the presence of hydrogen. The numerical results demonstrate that the force applied to the tooth drops with respect to the increase in the hydrogen amount. This behavior is attributed to the expansion of the NiTi structure after absorbing hydrogen. In addition, it is shown that hydrogen induces a loss of superelasticity. Hence, it attenuates the role of the orthodontic wire on the correction tooth malposition.

In port crane industry, the surface hardening technique is widely used in order to improve the strength of wheel. But the hardening depth is chosen only by according to the experience, and the effect of different hardened depths is not studied theoretically. In this paper, the contact stresses in wheel with different hardening depth have been analyzed by applying three-dimensional finite element model. Based on this model, the ANSYS10.0 finite element software is used. The elastic wheel is used to verify the numerical results with the Hertz’s theory. Three different hardening depths, namely 10mm, 25mm and whole hardened wheel, under three different vertical loads were applied. The effect of hardening depth of a surface hardened wheel is discussed by comparing the contact stresses and contact areas from the numerical results.

In this article the finite element software was used to analyse the values for compressive strength of X-cor sandwich. During the analysis, the failure criteria and materials stiffness degradation rules of failure mechanisms were proposed. The failure processes and failure modes were also clarified. In the finite element model we used the distributions of failure elements to simulate the failure processes. Meanwhile the failure mechanisms of X-cor sandwich were explained. The finite element analysis indicates that the resin regions of Z-pin tips fail firstly and the Z-pins fail secondly. The dominant failure mode is the Z-pin elastic buckling and the propagation paths of failure elements are dispersive. Through contrast the finite element values and test results are consistent well and the error range is -7.6%~9.5%. Therefore the failure criteria and stiffness degradation rules are reasonable and the model can be used to predict the compressive strength of X-cor sandwich.

Nowadays, NiTi rotary endodontic files are of great importance due to their flexibility which enables the device to cover all the portions of curved canal of tooth. Although this class of files are flexible, intracanal separation might happen during canal preparation due to bending or torsional loadings of the file. Since fabrication and characterization of such devices is challenging, time-consuming, and expensive, it is preferable to predict this failure before fabrication using numerical models. It is demonstrated that NiTi shape memory alloy shows asymmetric material response in tension and compression which can significantly affect the lifetime of the files fabricated from. In this article, the effects of this material asymmetry on the bending response of rotary files are assessed using finite element analysis. To do so, a constitutive model which takes material asymmetry into account is used in combination with the finite element model of a RaCe file. The results show that the material asymmetry can significantly affect the maximum von Mises equivalent stress as well as the force–displacement response of the tip of this file.

A composite FRP volleyball upright structure is analyzed by finite element (FE) method. A static analysis is performed using commercial finite element software ANSYS. Deformation and stress distributions under regular and upper bound force (i.e., to include dynamic/impact effect) are provided. An elastic eigenvalue analysis is carried out as well to predict the buckling load and modes.

The CAD software was used to establish 3D model of frame of dump truck, and the finite element model was established through Hyper Mesh. The stress distributions of the frame in vertical accelerating, turning, twisting and climbing conditions were computed through finite element software when the dump truck was loaded 80t. The result is consistent with the actual situation of the frame, which proved that the approach of finite element analysis is feasible. And we proposed the improved method of the frame according to finite element results.

When performing anterolateral foraminotomy for the treatment of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy, the extent of uncinate process resection affects the stability of the cervical spine. The aim of this study was to determine the stability of the cervical spine after resection of various amounts of the uncinate process. Based on computed tomography (CT) scans of an adult male volunteer, a three-dimensional geometric model of the cervical spine (C4-C6) was established using Mimics 13.1, SolidWorks 2012, and ANSYS 15.0 software packages. Next, the mechanical parameters of the tissues were assigned according to their different material characteristics. Using the tetrahedral mesh method, a three-dimensional finite element model of the cervical spine was then established. In modeling uncinated process resection, two excision protocols were compared. The first excision protocol, protocol A, mimicked the extent of resection used in current clinical surgical practice. The second excision protocol, protocol B, employed an optimal resection extent as predicted by the finite element model. Protocols A and B were then used to resect the left uncinate process of the C5 vertebra to either 50% or 60% of the total height of the uncinate process. The stability of the cervical spine was assessed by evaluating values of deformation and maximum equivalent stress during extension, flexion, lateral bending, and rotation. After protocol A resection, the total deformation was increased as was the maximum equivalent stress during left and right rotation. After protocol B resection, the total deformation was little changed and the maximum equivalent stress was visibly decreased during left and right rotation. As evidenced by these results, protocol B resection had relatively little effect on the stability of the cervical spine, suggesting that resection utilizing the limits proposed in protocol B appears to better maintain the stability of the cervical spine when compared with current clinical surgical practice as replicated in protocol A.
