SummaryThe values for the apparent size of the kidneys as determined by scintigraphy and radiography were compared on 100 normal adult subjects. The values for both the long and short axes, and for the area calculated therefrom, were corrected for the radiographic magnification of images. The results of the two methods agree reasonably well but scintigraphy must be considered to be the more reliable method as it provides a more accurate estimate of the short axis of the kidney.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the accuracy of length measurements on plain radiographs during leg lengthening and to evaluate a reliable method of measuring the amount of lengthening suitable for clinical praxis. Material and Methods: In an experimental study, a plastic femur was lengthened 40 mm and assessed radiographically in different positions, and the orthoradiographically calculated total length of the femur was compared with the true value. In a clinical study, 96 radiographs encompassing 14 femoral and 2 tibial lengthenings were assessed on a digitized table with a computer program (PROFILE) with regard to the amount of lengthening and the degree of magnification. Results: The radiographic magnification in the experimental study, depending on position of the femur, was 17% (5–25%), and in the clinical material it averaged 16% (0–36%). Conclusion: Radiographs obtained with a radiopaque ruler placed at the same level as the lengthened bone allowed reliable measurements of the distraction gap.

Much work has been reported on the chemical, physical and morphological properties of urinary Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein (THG). Although it was once reported that cystic fibrotic (CF) individuals had a defective THG, more recent data indicate that THG and CF-THG are similar if not identical.No studies on the conformational aspects have been reported on this glycoprotein using circular dichroism (CD). We examined the secondary structure of THG and derivatives under various conditions and have correlated these results with quaternary structure using electron microscopy.THG was prepared from normal adult males and CF-THG from a 16-year old CF female by the method of Tamm and Horsfall. Although there is general agreement that Inactive chromosome fibers consist of helically packed nucleosomes, the pattern of packing is still undetermined. Only one of the proposed models, the crossed-linker model, predicts a variable diameter dependent on the length of DNA between nucleosomes. Measurements of the fiber diameter of negatively-stained and frozen- hydrated- chromatin from Thyone sperm (87bp linker) and Necturus erythrocytes (48bp linker) have been previously reported from this laboratory. We now introduce a more reliable method of measuring the diameters of electron images of fibrous objects. The procedure uses a modified version of the computer program TOTAL, which takes a two-dimensional projection of the fiber density (represented by the micrograph itself) and projects it down the fiber axis onto one dimension. We illustrate this method using high contrast, in-focus STEM images of TMV and chromatin from Thyone and Necturus. The measured diameters are in quantitative agreement with the expected values for the crossed-linker model for chromatin structure

Results of intelligibility tests on a single patient with a severe discrimination loss for speech are reported. The patient was tested with four different hearing aids and with no aid, and the effects of opportunity for lipreading, background noise, and reverberation were evaluated. The tests appear to allow an accurate estimate of the amount of help to be expected in various situations and show that an aid with good fidelity is clearly superior to the others tested. The destructive effects of background noise and reverberation are demonstrated separately and in combination.

Summary Aim: In the present study a new approach has been developed for comparative quantification of absolute myocardial blood flow (MBF), myocardial perfusion, and myocardial metabolism in short-axis slices. Methods: 42 patients with severe CAD, referred for myocardial viability diagnostics, were studied consecutively with 0-15-H2O PET (H2O-PET) (twice), Tc-99m-Tetrofosmin 5PECT (TT-SPECT) and F-18-FDG PET (FDG-PET). All dato sets were reconstructed using attenuation correction and reoriented into short axis slices. Each heart was divided into three representative slices (base, rnidventricular, apex) and 18 ROIs were defined on the FDG PET images and transferred to the corresponding H2O-PET and TT-SPECT slices. TT-SPECT and FDG-PET data were normalized to the ROI showing maximum perfusion. MBF was calculated for all left-ventricular ROIs using a single-compartment-model fitting the dynamic H2O-PET studies. Microsphere equivalent MBF (MBF_micr) was calculated by multiplying MBF and tissue-fraction, a parameter which was obtained by fitting the dynamic H2O-PET studies. To reduce influence of viability only well perfused areas (>70% TT-SPECT) were used for comparative quantification. Results: First and second mean global MBF values were 0.85 ml × min-1 × g-1 and 0.84 ml × min-1 × g1, respectively, with a repeatability coefficient of 0.30 ml ÷ min-1 × gl. After sectorization mean MBF_micr was between 0.58 ml × min1 ÷ ml"1 and 0.68 ml × min-1 × ml"1 in well perfused areas. Corresponding TT-SPECT values ranged from 83 % to 91 %, and FDG-PET values from 91 % to 103%. All procedures yielded higher values for the lateral than the septal regions. Conclusion: Comparative quantification of MBF, MBF_micr, TT-SPECT perfusion and FDG-PET metabolism can be done with the introduced method in short axis slices. The obtained values agree well with experimentally validated values of MBF and MBF_micr.
