Abstract We propose a simple but unexplored model for the semiconductor band bending with the aim to obtain a relatively simple expression to calculate the energy spectrum for the confined levels and the analytical expressions for wave-functions. This model consists of a linear potential but it is bounded or trimmed in energy unlike the well known wedge potential model. We present exact solutions for this potential in the frame of the effective mass approximation and they are valid for electron or hole confinement potential. This model provides a more adequate physical scenario than the wedge potential since it takes into account the charge balance involved in the band bending potential. These results allow to treat confined potential problems as in the case of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a simplified way. We discuss the application of this approximation to the recombination time of electrons an holes and for the Franz-Keldysh effect.

In this paper, an improved and simplified modification of a tantalum oxide memristor model is presented. The proposed model is applied and analyzed in hybrid and passive memory crossbars in LTSPICE environment and is based on the standard Ta2O5 memristor model proposed by Hewlett–Packard. The discussed modified model has several main enhancements—inclusion of a simplified window function, improvement of its effectiveness by the use of a simple expression for the i–v relationship, and replacement of the classical Heaviside step function with a differentiable and flat step-like function. The optimal values of coefficients of the tantalum oxide memristor model are derived by comparison of experimental current–voltage relationships and by using a procedure for parameter estimation. A simplified LTSPICE library model, correspondent to the analyzed tantalum oxide memristor, is created in accordance with the considered mathematical model. The improved and altered Ta2O5 memristor model is tested and simulated in hybrid and passive memory crossbars for a state near to a hard-switching operation. After a comparison of several of the best existing memristor models, the main pros of the proposed memristor model are highlighted—its improved implementation, better operating rate, and good switching properties.

In recent years, Canadian/US singer, songwriter, and author Neil Young’s production shows increased signs of environmental awareness, manifested in his promotion of biofuels, critique of genetic manipulation, biotechnology, and ecocide, as well as in his warm attitude to non-human animals. These issues are dealt with in detail in his recent memoir Special Deluxe: A Memoir of Life & Cars (2015), as well as on his recently released albums such as The Monsanto Years (2015) and Earth (2016). While this interest in the natural world could be seen as a simple expression of a 1960s countercultural hippie world view, this essay will propose a different reading of the meaning of animals and the non-human in Young’s Special Deluxe by placing it in the context of human–animal studies and its critique of anthropocentrism. By reading the memoir’s representations of non-human animals in tandem with the emphatic role of the environment on Young’s recent albums, this essay argues that Young’s recent work reveals an increased concern for relationality and non-humans in human life and thus problematizes modernity’s insistence on anthropocentrism and human mastery over nature. Based on the critique of modernity and its anthropocentric hierarchies presented by human–animal studies scholarship (Haraway 2008; Armstrong 2008; Marvin and McHugh 2014), it is suggested that Young’s work foregrounds an explicit concern with the non-human world through its increasing focus on the relationality of the human and the non-human, and their mutual interdependence. The importance of non-human others, especially dogs, to the memoir’s narrator is addressed in detail, and the close transspecies relationship seen as an example of the emotional significance of non-human others in everyday life.   Keywords: Neil Young, Special Deluxe: A Memoir of Life & Cars, environmentalism, human–animal studies, anthropocentricism

A single-end fault location method for single-phase nonmetallic grounding faults of transmission lines in a double terminal system is studied and proposed. First, the reason for the poor accuracy of the single-end fault location method in case of single-phase nonmetallic grounding faults is analyzed theoretically, and the necessary conditions for the single-end accurate fault location are put forward. Second, under the necessary conditions of the single-end accurate fault location, according to the topology of fault component networks, the calculation method of the single-end accurate fault location of transmission lines in a double terminal system is studied. Moreover, the influence of line capacitance is considered in this fault location method, and a simple expression for calculating the fault distance is obtained. Finally, the transmission line with a single-phase nonmetallic grounding fault is modeled in PSCAD; therefore, the correctness and the ability against transition resistance of the new single-end fault location method are verified by simulation.

Strong radiation from solar X-ray flares can produce increased ionization in the terrestrial D-region and change its structure. Moreover, extreme solar radiation in X-spectral range can create sudden ionospheric disturbances and can consequently affect devices on the terrain as well as signals from satellites and presumably cause numerous uncontrollable catastrophic events. One of the techniques for detection and analysis of solar flares is studying the variations in time of specific spectral lines. The aim of this work is to present our study of solar X-ray flare effects on D-region using very low-frequency radio signal measurements over a long path in parallel with the analysis of X-spectral radiation, and to obtain the atmospheric parameters (sharpness, reflection height, time delay). We introduce a novel modelling approach and give D-region coefficients needed for modelling this medium, as well as a simple expression for electron density of lower ionosphere plasmas. We provide the analysis and software on GitHub.

Circular histogram represents the statistical distribution of circular data; the H component histogram of HSI color model is a typical example of the circular histogram. When using H component to segment color image, a feasible way is to transform the circular histogram into a linear histogram, and then, the mature gray image thresholding methods are used on the linear histogram to select the threshold value. Thus, the reasonable selection of the breakpoint on circular histogram to linearize the circular histogram is the key. In this paper, based on the angles mean on circular histogram and the line mean on linear histogram, a simple breakpoint selection criterion is proposed, and the suitable range of this method is analyzed. Compared with the existing breakpoint selection criteria based on Lorenz curve and cumulative distribution entropy, the proposed method has the advantages of simple expression and less calculation and does not depend on the direction of rotation.

Abstract The paper shows a modification of the quasi-thermodynamic approach to simulation of the interfacial layer from conditions of its mechanical equilibrium. The anisotropy of the interfacial stress tensor is represented as the sum of the ball and deviator parts, where the ball part defines the pressure in the medium and the deviator part forms the components responsible for the liquid surface tension. Obtaining a closed system of equilibrium equations was possible taking into account evaporation from free surface of liquid. The result is a simple expression for determining the thickness of the interfacial layer.

<p>The building-body analogy, which used to be crucial in the designing of buildings, to the exception of a few, is fading. This broken link leaves us with a melancholic yearning; a sense of loss. Reactivating Dynamic Architecture readdresses the use of the body in architecture by the application of an intervening design process. The processes we undertake in order to design architecture are too often assumed, and go unchallenged. In this thesis the design process is seen as a protagonist for change. Representation, both architectural and artistic, is a central theme as the thesis guides images of the human body through abstraction. Both the dynamic body and fragmented body are investigated for their potential to create a relevant expression for the human condition. Dalibor Vesely’s theory of the positive fragment is identified as a way forward for bodily fragmentation, and Analytical Cubism, which resonated with this theory, is explored. The thesis initially moves through the investigation of historical interpretations of the body before drawing on contemporary theory. Past depictions of the fragmented and dynamic body are assessed in order to establish what they can offer us for future analysis. A representational mode is established, based on Cubism’s methods, from here the transition from drawings to architecture begins. Rowe and Slutzky’s text Transparency: Literal and Phenomenal is used to unravel the intricacies of Le Corbusier’s Villa at Garches, and their reading of this building is used to channel a successful conversion process. The resulting architecture was created as a trial of the strategy and is posed as an expression, or speculation, for what can be achieved through this method. Three different scale interventions are explored within the chosen site of Ava Train Station, Wellington. Carlo Scarpa’s techniques guide the last transition to architecture, as his processes are recognised for their ability to fold meaning into design. The described design process gathers complexity as it gains momentum; there is much to negotiate through the realms of bodily perception, modern art and architectural representation. However, the architectural expression carries that density of meaning in a simple expression</p>

Abstract In this work, we give a quantitative answer to the question: how sudden or how adiabatic is a frequency change in a quantum harmonic oscillator (HO)? We do that by studying the time evolution of a HO which is initially in its fundamental state and whose time-dependent frequency is controlled by a parameter (denoted by ε) that can continuously tune from a totally slow process to a completely abrupt one. We extend a solution based on algebraic methods introduced recently in the literature that is very suited for numerical implementations, from the basis that diagonalizes the initial hamiltonian to the one that diagonalizes the instantaneous hamiltonian. Our results are in agreement with the adiabatic theorem and the comparison of the descriptions using the different bases together with the proper interpretation of this theorem allows us to clarify a common inaccuracy present in the literature. More importantly, we obtain a simple expression that relates squeezing to the transition rate and the initial and final frequencies, from which we calculate the adiabatic limit of the transition. Analysis of these results reveals a significant difference in squeezing production between enhancing or diminishing the frequency of a HO in a non-sudden way.
