Abstract Introduction Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the common disorders of the peripheral vestibular system. The prevalence of BPPV is found to be higher among middle-aged women. Objectives To estimate the serum levels of calcium and vitamin D in patients with BPPV, and to study their association. Methods The present is a hospital-based prospective case-control study. Venous blood samples of the 49 patients with BPPV and an equal number of age- and gender-matched individuals were recruited and submitted to an analysis of the serum levels of calcium and vitamin D. Results Among the cases, 67.3% were found to be females, and 32.7% were males. Most of the 30 cases (61.3%) were aged > 40 years. The mean age of the cases was 44.39 years. The mean serum level of vitamin D in the cases was of 21.26 ng/ml compared with 17.59 ng/ml in the controls. The mean serum level of calcium was of 9.33 mg/dl in the cases, compared with 8.95 mg/dl in the controls. There was no significant difference in the serum levels of vitamin D and calcium between cases and controls. Conclusion We could not establish any correlation between the serum levels of calcium and vitamin D with BPPV. However, a negative relationship was found between the serum levels of vitamin D and the number of episodes of BPPV (p = 0.012).

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to evaluate serum otolin-1 levels in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and to compare these levels with healthy individuals. Method This was a case-control study. After obtaining institutional ethical committee clearance, the serum level of otolin-1 was calculated in adult individuals (18–75 years old) who were divided into group 1 (patients presenting with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) and group 2 (healthy patients without benign paroxysmal positional vertigo as the control group). Data analysis was carried out to compare the serum levels in the cases and controls. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results A total of 70 age-matched individuals (cases, n = 40; controls, n = 30) were included in the study. The mean serum level of otolin-1 was 636.8 pg/ml (range, 259–981 pg/ml) in the group of patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and 236.2 pg/ml (range, 189–370 pg/ml) in the control group. The difference was statistically significant (p = 0.0000). Conclusion The serum levels of otolin-1 in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo are significantly higher compared with individuals without benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Abstract Objective: To investigate the possible role of superoxide dismutases (SODs) in the development of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and recurrence events in a 1-year follow-up study. Methods: This was a prospective one-center study. A total of 204 patients with BPPV and 120 age-and sex matched healthy subjects were included. The levels of SOD between patients and control cases were compared. The levels of SOD between posterior semicircular canal (PSC) and horizontal semicircular canal (HSC) were also compared. In the 1-year follow-up, recurrence events were confirmed. The influence of SOD levels on BPPV and recurrent BPPV were performed by binary logistic regression analysis. Results: The serum levels of SOD in patients with BPPV were lower than in those control cases (P<0.001). Levels of SOD did not differ in patients with PSC and HSC (P=0.42). As a categorical variable, for per interquartile range (IQR) increment of serum level of SOD, the unadjusted and adjusted risks of BPPV would be decreased by 72% (with the odds ratio [OR] of 0.28 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.21–0.37], P<0.001) and 43% (0.57 [0.42–0.69], P<0.001), respectively. Recurrent attacks of BPPV were reported in 50 patients (24.5%). Patients with recurrent BPPV had lower levels of SOD than in patients without (P<0.001). For per IQR increment of serum level of SOD, the unadjusted and adjusted risks of BPPV would be decreased by 51% (with the OR of 0.49 [95% CI: 0.36–0.68], P<0.001) and 24% (0.76 [0.60–0.83], P<0.001), respectively. Conclusion: Reduced serum levels of SOD were associated with higher risk of BPPV and BPPV recurrence events.

Abstract Background: The present study aimed to evaluate serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH) D) levels in Chinese patients with idiopathic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and to investigate the possible relationship between the occurrence and recurrence of idiopathic BPPV and low 25(OH) D levels. Methods: Between 1 January 2017 and 31 May, 2018, consecutively older patients (age, older than 50 years) with idiopathic BPPV were recruited in the present study. For each patient, 2:1 sex and age matched healthy people were assigned as the control group. The influence of 25(OH) D levels on BPPV and recurrent BPPV were performed by binary logistic regression analysis. Results: In the present study, 174 patients with BPPV and 348 controls were included. The serum levels of 25(OH) D in those patients were lower than in those controls (P<0.001). One hundred eight patients were found to have vitamin D deficiency; thus, the prevalence was 62.1%, which was higher than that in the controls (42.8%). The data showed that patients with recurrent BPPV (N = 31) had lower serum levels of 25(OH) D compared with those who were not (11.2 ng/ml [interquartile range, 7.2–20.8 ng/ml] vs 18.7 ng/ml [14.2–24.8 ng/ml]). The regression analyses demonstrated that vitamin D deficiency was associated with BPPV and recurrent BPPV with an odds ratio of 2.15 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.30–4.32; P=0.006) and 5.16 (95% CI, 1.00–34.12; P=0.05). Conclusion: Decreased serum levels of 25(OH)D were associated with the occurrence and recurrence of BPPV in a Chinese population, independent of other baseline markers.

Introduction: Vitamin D deficiency is a major public health problem. Low vitamin D levels associated with adverse health consequences such as musculoskeletal health, cognitive decline and progression of cancer and death. The lack of vitamin D associated with major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) includes hypertension is considered. The ability to assess the general health, disease and treatment outcomes through saliva as a non-invasive, inexpensive and simple method of interest is located. The aim of this study was a comparative study of salivary and serum levels of vitamin D3 in patients with a history of developing high blood pressure and a healthy person.Methods: This study was a case - control survey, in which 40 patients with high blood pressure were examined. The control group including 40 healthy subjects. Both groups were matched in terms of age and gender. After collecting samples of serum and saliva, the amount of vitamin D level samples were measured using ELISA method by electrochemiluminescence (ELC), and then analyzed the results using software SPSS 16 and statistical test including Chi Square Test, Independent-Samples, linear regression model, the Mann-Whitney Test and Spearman correlation coefficient.Results: There was no significant difference in the mean serum levels of vitamin D among patients and healthy subjects (p= 0.588). In addition, there was no significant difference in the mean salivary levels of vitamin D between patients and healthy subjects (p= 0.833). There was no significant relationship between salivary and serum level of vitamin D in healthy individuals (p= 0.095). As well as there was no significant correlation between salivary and serum level of vitamin D in patients (p= 0.5).Conclusions: This study showed that vitamin D is a measurable marker in saliva, but its analysis in saliva, may not be a reliable tool for determining the vitamin D levels.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum vitamin D levels and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Participants and Methods: This prospective study consisted of 137 participants. There were 69 participants in the BPPV group compared with 68 healthy participants. Blood samples from both groups were collected from all participants to assess serum vitamin D levels. Results: No significant difference in demographic data between BPPV and control groups. The results showed that the mean serum vitamin D levels in the BPPV group was lower than that of the control group ( P value = .001). Among BPPV participants, there was no statistically significant difference between mean serum vitamin D levels of participants with recurrent BPPV, and that of newly diagnosed BPPV participants ( P value = .313). Conclusion: A statistically significant association between lower mean serum vitamin D levels in the BPPV group compared with that of the control group. Therefore, low serum vitamin D levels may be one of the risk factors for BPPV.

Objective: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is characterized by recurrent attacks of vertigo caused by head movements. It occurs as a result of otoconia falling into the semicircular canal. Calcium and 25 hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] metabolism in the inner ear play an important role in otoconia formation and degeneration. Our aim in this study was to investigate the relationship between 25(OH)D levels and BPPV. Methods: This retrospective, case–controlled study included 52 patients with posterior canal BPPV and 52 controls aged 18 to 80 years. Age, sex, serum calcium, corrected calcium, and 25(OH)D levels of the BPPV and control group were compared. Results: Twenty-three of the patients were male (44.2%) and 29 were female (55.8%). The average age was 55.6 years. The 25(OH)D level was 15.3 ng/mL in the BPPV group and 20.2 ng/mL in controls. There was no significant difference in 25(OH)D and albumin-corrected calcium values ( P = .394; P = .084, respectively). In 80.7% of the BPPV group and 61.5% of the controls, 25(OH)D levels were 20 ng/mL and below. 25 hydroxyvitamin D deficiency was found statistically significantly more frequently in patients with BPPV ( P = .030). Conclusion: In our study, serum 25(OH)D levels were found to be lower in patients with BPPV, and the rate of vitamin D deficiency was higher in these patients. Based on these results, it is recommended to examine the 25(OH)D levels of patients with BPPV at the time of diagnosis.

Asthma is a chronical disease of the airways characterized by reversible obstruction of the bronchi and airway inflammation. In recent decades, the scientific interest of the vitamin D system and its role in development of asthma and other alergic diseases has been increased. Aims of this study are to mesure and compare the serum level of 25 OHD in asthmatic and healthy children and corelate the level of 25OHD and total IgE in asthmatic children. This prospective study includes 70 children at age 2 to 14, of which 32 are children with diagnosed asthma and 38 healthy children. In both  of the groups the serum level of 25 OHD was measured  and by the results 18 % of the healthy children (C) and 28% of the asthma children (E) had 25OHD  deficiency, 45%  of C and 50% of E were insufficient and 37 % of C / 22% of E were with normal 25 OHD serum level. The mean level of 25OHD in C was 27,83 +/- 10,24 and in E 20,9 ng/ml +/- 10,72. The mean levels in both groups had statistic significant difference with p-value < 0,05. According to age no statistic significant difference was found in both of the groups. There was a statisticaly significant decreased serum level of 25 OHD in asthmatic females.In the examined group (children with asthma) there was a negative linear correlation (association) of the level of 25OHD and total IgE serum level with r=- 0,55  Vitamin D serum level measurements in asthma patients gives the possibility for discovering the connection between its deficiency and development of asthma symptoms.

Objective: To investigate the roles of serum uric acid (UA), bilirubin (BIL), albumin (ALB), and creatinine (CRE) as major intravascular antioxidants, in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).Methods: The serum levels of UA, BIL, ALB, and CRE were retrospectively analyzed in 70 patients with new-onset idiopathic BPPV and 140 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs).Results: Serum UA, BIL, ALB, and CRE levels were significantly lower in the BPPV group than the HC group. Furthermore, serum levels of BIL and ALB were significantly lower in the BPPV group when compared by sex. Multiple stepwise logistic regression revealed that a reduction in serum ALB was independently related to BPPV (odds ratio = 0.688; 95% confidence interval = 0.607– 0.780). Receiver operating characteristic analyses revealed a cut-off value of 45.15 g/L for ALB with a sensitivity of 74.29% (62.97– 83.07%) and specificity of 73.57% (65.71– 80.18%).Conclusions: Serum levels of UA, BIL, ALB, and CRE were lower in BPPV patients, indicating a lower antioxidant status. Furthermore, a reduction in serum ALB was independently associated with BPPV. These results provide insights into the possible roles of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of BPPV.
