Sustainability of Moving Atlanta Interstate Highways within the Perimeter Underground: Preliminary Detour Analysis

In this study, 98 regression models were specified for easily estimating shortest distances based on great circle distances along the U.S. interstate highways nationwide and for each of the continental 48 states. This allows transportation professionals to quickly generate distance, or even distance matrix, without expending significant efforts on complicated shortest path calculations. For simple usage by all professionals, all models are present in the simple linear regression form. Only one explanatory variable, the great circle distance, is considered to calculate the route distance. For each geographic scope (i.e., the national or one of the states), two different models were considered, with and without the intercept. Based on the adjusted R-squared, it was observed that models without intercepts generally have better fitness. All these models generally have good fitness with the linear regression relationship between the great circle distance and route distance. At the state level, significant variations in the slope coefficients between the state-level models were also observed. Furthermore, a preliminary analysis of the effect of highway density on this variation was conducted.

Background: Run Off The Road (ROTR) crashes are some of the most severe crashes that could occur on roadways. The main countermeasure that can be taken to address this type of crashe is traffic barrier installation. Although ROTR crashes can be mitigated significantly by traffic barriers, still traffic barrier crashes resulted in considerable amount of severe crashes. Besides, the types of traffic barriers, driver actions and performance play an important role in the severity of these crashes. Methods: This study was conducted by incorporating only traffic barrier crashes in Wyoming. Based on the literature review there are unique contributory factors in different crash types. Therefore, in addition to focusing on traffic barrier crashes, crashes were divided into two different highway classes: interstate and non-interstate highways. Results: The result of proportional odds assumption was an indication that multinomial logistic regression model is appropriate for both non-interstate and interstates crashes involved with traffic barriers. The results indicated that road surface conditions, age, driver restraint and negotiating a curve were some of the factors that impact the severity of traffic barrier crashes on non-interstate highways. On the other hand, the results of interstate barrier crashes indicated that besides types of barriers, driver condition, citation record, speed limit compliance were some of the factors that impacted the interstate traffic barrier crash severity. Conclusion: The results of this study would provide the policymakers with the directions to take appropriate countermeasures to alleviate the severity of traffic barrier crashes.

Cable-stayed bridges are ideal for spanning natural barriers of wide rivers, deep valleys, or ravines, and for pedestrian bridges crossing wide interstate highways. Modern construction of cable-stayed bridges makes use of the segmental balanced cantilever techniques and involves many repetitive cycles of placing the concrete segments (both cast-in-place and precast) and supporting cables. It provides a fertile area for the application of computer simulation techniques for the planning and analysis of the process, particularly for studying the interaction of resources used in the construction phase and also for assessing the productivity of the construction processes. This paper employs MicroCYCLONE, a microcomputer-based simulation program, for the modeling and simulation of the construction of two cable-stayed bridges: the Dame Point Bridge in the state of Florida, U.S.A., and the Tsukuhara Bridge in Hyuougo, Japan. The paper will also provide a brief explanation of the suspended long traveler method used on the Tsukuhara Bridge, the simulation models developed to analyze the construction processes, and the results of sensitivity analyses.Key words: simulation, modeling, construction, cable-stayed bridges, resources, productivity, balanced cantilever construction.

This study explored factors affecting traffic accidents in roadway segments with and without lighting systems using a random parameter negative binomial model. This study sought to make up for a shortcoming of the fixed parameter model that constrained the estimated parameters to be fixed across observations, by applying random parameters that can take into account unobserved heterogeneity. Three variables had a random parameter among nine significant variables in segments with lighting systems, while seven of the eleven significant variables in a segment without a lighting system had random parameters. The different influence of interstate highway geometrics on vehicle crashes with and without lighting systems found through this study considering unobserved heterogeneity may hopefully help reduce accident frequencies and consider installation of lighting systems on interstate highways in the future.

Background:As one of the most underserved segments of the U.S. labor force, truck drivers have been associated with a series of morbid conditions intimately linked to their occupational milieux, their mostly unhealthful nutritional intake and sedentary lifestyles, and their resulting excess weight-gain.Methods:This paper reports data from a baseline assessment of 25 trucking work settings located around interstate highways I-40 and I-85 in North Carolina. It examines how the environmental attributes of these work settings influence the physical and recreational activity behaviors of truckers, compares findings with those from other occupational environments, and brings to the fore a new health promotion paradigm for trucking worksites.Results:Findings support growing empirical and anecdotal evidence that trucking work settings remain not only active-living deserts, but overall unhealthful places. A scan of physical, social, and information environments within trucking worksites as well as physical environments of surrounding communities reveal only meager opportunities for physical and recreational activity for truckers.Conclusion:This paper places the highly underserved population of truckers firmly within the discourse of worksite health promotion, and calls for comprehensive multistakeholder wellness strategies that address a multitude of risk factors linked to the occupational context.
