Purpose The purpose of this paper is to synthesize and evaluate the available literature with respect to critical success factors (CSFs) for sustainable construction (SC). Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review (SLR) was undertaken to assist in the identification of the most pertinent papers from three publishers: Emerald, Elsevier and Wiley. The literature findings were assessed and presented relative to publication, author and contents as determined by review. Findings The SLR was conducted using a number of search criteria. A final set of 31 publications were detected for further examination. The characteristics in terms of publications, authors and contents of the extracted publication set were examined and discussed. A total of 35 factors were identified, distributed in five research categories. The frequency of the extracted factors within the publication set was investigated and enabled valuable quantitative and qualitative observations of current trends for SC. Interestingly, all research categories were represented in the top-counted factors, demonstrating a holistic perception of SC. Given the publication set, in most aspects, the research area examined seems to demonstrate features of an emerging field, which is not yet well established. Research limitations/implications SLR cannot ensure that all pertinent publications were identified, because it was tailored to a number of search criteria, although certain actions were taken to moderate this limitation. However, the outcome adequately identifies trends and offers valuable information and knowledge for SC and its successful implementation. Originality/value The present study presents a broad list of factors for SC, integrated from a variety of disciplines and stakeholders. The findings, therefore, provide a valuable reference for both construction professionals and practitioners attempting to implement SC. Furthermore, the list can be of use to academic scholars for further empirical work and basis for future research.

A construction project is a dynamic and complex process that involves the identification and accurate fulfillment of the predetermined needs and requirements of the clients by the project team. There are many challenges and constraints that prevent the achievement of these predetermined and various requirements effectively and successfully, so the project team must face and overcome these challenges by identifying all the factors that help the project’s success. However, it is still unclear how to measure success for Egyptian construction projects. Despite the fact that several lists of literature-based factors have been compiled, the individual factors appear to be tabulated rather than grouped according to some criteria to aid in the analysis of their interactions and potential consequences. As such, the objective presented in this paper was to identify and prioritize integrated sustainable critical success factors (ISCSFs) that influence the performance of Egyptian construction projects to ensure successful construction projects. Critical success factors were identified and grouped into 2 major categories—(1) internal related factors and (2) external related factors—and 10 subcategories—(1) company-related factors; (2) project-related factors; (3) project management related factors; (4) resource/procurement-related factors (labors, materials, equipment and subcontractors); (5) human capital-related factors; (6) support-related factors (financial, human resources, security and legal and administration); (7) stakeholder-related factors (clients, consultants, project managers and end-users); (8) innovation, learning and growth-related factors; (9) country-related factors; and (10) industry-related factors in three distinct stages. In total, 140 factors were gathered from the literature review in the first stage. In the second stage, a brainstorming session was held in order to reduce the number of those factors and focus on the most important ones that influence project success; thus, 100 factors were identified, filtered and developed. In the third stage, a questionnaire was created based on the significant factors identified. As a result, the 40 most important factors influencing the success of performance of construction projects have been identified, which are integrated between all factors (internal and external) and take into account the three pillars of sustainability (economic, social and environmental) as a decision-making tool to evaluate and improve project performance.

Abstract Water supply projects (WSP) requires high plan information, specialized capabilities, capable human resources, and high administrative capacity. However, in the developing countries, particularly in Iraq, these projects experience a lack of a large number of these necessities, which shows the need to identify the critical success factors (CSFs). Accordingly, the objectives of this research are to investigate the CSFs for WSP and their significance among the construction (public and private) and education sectors. To achieve this, first we have carried out a comprehensive literature review of the CSFs for WSP. Second, we administrated a questionnaire survey to 260 construction experts working in the construction and education sectors. It was found that the top five important success factors for water supply projects in Iraq were a stable political environment; sustainable construction legislation and regulation; effective risk management practices; well-organized and committed project teams; and government decisions through the project life cycle. The survey results did not indicate major differences in the perception of the experts. The findings are focused to assist construction practitioners’ gain better understanding on the important areas to achieve project set objectives.

It is necessary to identify critical success factors (CSFs) that affect the construction process. This paper’s aim is to define the CSFs considering views of all construction project stakeholders. The contribution of this paper is to categorize project success factors into categories and quantify the effect of each category taking into account the effect of all stakeholders on project efficiency and progress. To achieve this objective, a comprehensive literature review was carried out. After literature review, 40 success factors were compiled into seven categories: project-related factors, company- and work-related factors, client-related factors, project management factors, design-team-related factors, contractor-related factors, project-manager-related factors. Consequently, a survey including these listed success factors was prepared and distributed to various experts in the construction field to be ranked; 148 responses were received. Employing the Relative Importance Index (RII) and traditional Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method with Saaty random index that prioritizes these CSFs, the collected data were analyzed after receiving responses. Even though there were disagreements in stakeholders’ views and their goals, significant areas have been identified as project financial issues, managerial aspects, and authorities’ approval mechanism. The outcome of this paper would be used by construction industry professionals to support, evaluate, and measure the success of projects for better allocation of resources.

Malaysia is in a need of commitment to more sustainable development, rather than a traditional approach ‘grow first, clean up later’ to ensure the protection of environment and not to compromise needs of future generations. Although initiatives for the environmental protection have been introduced in 1960s, they have yet to receive a sufficient level of adoption amongst the construction stakeholders in Malaysia. Therefore, via questionnaire surveys to 130 professionals involved in mixed development projects, this paper aims at investigating barriers to, and critical success factors (CSFs) of sustainable construction (SC) in the mixed development projects in Malaysia. The outcomes translated via the Relative Importance Index (RII) technique reveal that the most critical barriers are SC projects are expensive, unwillingness to change to SC and high cost in purchasing technology, the learning curve cost and employing skilled labour, whilst the most significant CSFs are initial investment, commitment for changing behaviours, policy implementation efforts, guidance for SC, available of technology and materials and project procurement system. This paper focuses on the implementation of SC in delivering mixed development projects in Malaysia that is in line with the Malaysian sustainability goal in adopting the sustainable consumption and production concept. This paper is promoting sustainable development overseen by Malaysia via discussion of the SC directions and practices in delivering the Malaysian mixed development project.
