The Prandtl number is evaluated for the three-dimensional hard-sphere and one-component plasma fluids, from the dilute weakly coupled regime up to a dense strongly coupled regime near the fluid-solid phase transition. In both cases, numerical values of order unity are obtained. The Prandtl number increases on approaching the freezing point, where it reaches a quasi-universal value for simple dielectric fluids of about ≃1.7. Relations to two-dimensional fluids are briefly discussed.

Network artificial chemistry (NAC) uses a mathematical graph to emulate molecular interaction in a solvent. To emulate molecules' movement in a three-dimensional space, rewiring rules for NAC graphs’ edges must be designed to enable the edges to imitate the relations between molecules or atomic clusters. Our research formulated the ‘network energy’ representing this constraint and rewired the NAC graph to minimize the required energy. Experimental results for the NAC rewiring are compared with a hard-sphere random walk simulation.

Polymeric fluids arise in many practical applications in biotechnology, medicine, chemistry, industrial processes, and atmospheric sciences. In this paper, the Doi model for the suspensions of rod-like molecules in a compressible fluid is investigated. The model under consideration describes the interaction between the orientation of rod-like polymer molecules on the microscopic scale and the macroscopic properties of the fluid in which these molecules are contained. Prescribing arbitrarily the initial density of the fluid, the initial velocity, and the initial orientation distribution in suitable spaces, we establish the global-in-time existence of a weak solution to our model defined on a bounded domain in the three-dimensional space. The proof relies on the construction of an approximate sequence of solutions by introducing appropriate regularization and the establishment of compactness.

Cu K-edge XANES spectroscopy has been used to study local structure around the Cu-site in three-dimensional oxygen deficient perovkite La 8- x Sr x Cu 8 O 20 system. The combination of E//ab and E//c polarization and high resolution XANES spectra on high quality single crystals has allowed us to distinguish the various features associated with the complex Cu-O networks in the system which have then been compared with those of the La 2- x Sr x CuO 4 system.
