The well-defined block copolymer PMMA-b-PS was prepared by two-step ATRP in emulsion system. GPC results indicate that Mn increased linearly with conversion and polydispersity remained relatively narrow. It presents the characteristics of living polymerization in emulsion system. FT-IR demonstrated that block copolymer PMMA-b-PS could be successfully synthesized by ATRP with macroinitiator PMMA-Cl in emulsion system. The morphological characteristic of the self-assembly depends on the block copolymer concentration and transforms between spheres and rodlike micelles. The property indicates a perfect potential application in drug delivery materials.

AbstractChagas disease is a public health problem, affecting about 7 million people worldwide. Benznidazole (BZN) is the main treatment option, but it has limited effectiveness and can cause severe adverse effects. Drug delivery through nanoparticles has attracted the interest of the scientific community aiming to improve therapeutic options. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of benznidazole-loaded calcium carbonate nanoparticles (BZN@CaCO3) on Trypanosoma cruzi strain Y. It was observed that BZN@CaCO3 was able to reduce the viability of epimastigote, trypomastigote and amastigote forms of T. cruzi with greater potency when compared with BZN. The amount of BZN necessary to obtain the same effect was up to 25 times smaller when loaded with CaCO3 nanoparticles. Also, it was observed that BZN@CaCO3 enhanced the selectivity index. Furthermore, the cell-death mechanism induced by both BZN and BZN@CaCO3 was evaluated, indicating that both substances caused necrosis and changed mitochondrial membrane potential.

In this paper, we successfully designed a pH-responsive micelles based on hybrid polypeptide copolymers of poly (L-lysine-4-Azepan-1-yl-butyric)-b-poly (ethylene glycol)-b-poly (L-lysine-Diisopropylamide)-b-poly (L-leucine) (PLL(A)-PEG-PLL(B)-PLLeu) for efficient drug delivery. This pH-responsive nanoparticles were able to response to different pH values (pH=6.8 and 5.5). In vitro, these nanoparticles exhibited a stable and evenly distributed approximately 51 nm, a slightly positive potential about 10.3 mv at pH 7.4, which were crucial for the circulation of drugs in blood. While size and potential were about 130 nm and 34.7 mv at pH 6.8, which were good for drugs in membrane. Furthermore, the loading capability of DOX was up to 11.3%, and the pH-responsive release efficiency reached to 68.3% at pH 5.5. The results indicated that these micelles had huge potential application in cancer delivery.
