Mosquito index study of three ecologically different ecozones of the Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala showed sharp difference on the proportionate distribution of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Human dengue viremia (HDV) was very high in those ecozones where A.aegypti density was high and HDV was low where A.albopictus was high. In a coastal zone of Thiruvananthapuram city, A. aegypti was the most abundant vector and in a hilly, arid suburban zone, A.albopictus was the abundant vector. In the urban zone both species of mosquitoes showed equal distribution. Study on the circulating serotypes in the serum of HDV by Single step single tube Multiplex PCR showed all the four serotypes viz DENV1, DENV2, DENV3 and DENV4 in patients of Thiruvananthapuram city, which indicated the possibility of Dengue Shock Syndrome, unless there is efficient vector management. Among the four dengue serotypes, Type 1 was the most abundant virus. Abundance of microhabitats in Thiruvananthapuram city, which support A. aegypti may be the reason for high prevalence of dengue fever in the urban zone.

Abstract Tire properties are some of the most important factors causing vehicle drift. In this paper, the influences of wheel alignment and tire properties on vehicle drift are discussed. The relationship between the wheel alignment of a vehicle and vehicle drift are examined. Also analyzed is the relationship between vehicle drift and front tire torque by using a four-wheel model while considering tire characteristics. The calculated front tire torque is compared with vehicle drift.

Background: Ferruginol (FRGN) exhibits a broad range of pharmacological properties which make it a promising candidate for chemoprevention. However, little is known about its absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) properties. Methods: A rapid, sensitive and specific HPLC-DAD method was established to quantify FRGN in the plasma and tissues of Wistar rats. After extraction of FRGN with ethyl acetate (EtOAc), chromatographic separation was performed on a YMC ODS C18 column (250 × 4.6 mm I.D., 5 µm) with a mobile phase consisting of methanol-water (92:8, v/v) at a flow rate of 0.9 mL/min. Detection was conducted with a wavelength of 273 nm at 25 °C. Results: The calibration curves for FRGN were linear in the concentration range of 0.5-20 µg/mL for plasma, 0.5-10 µg/mL for heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, stomach, intestine, brain and muscle. After three cycles of freezing and thawing, the concentration variations were within ± 7% of nominal concentrations, indicating no significant substance loss during repeated thawing and freezing. The assay was applied to pharmacokinetic and tissue distribution study in rats. Results suggested that lung, heart, liver, spleen and kidney were the major distribution tissues of FRGN in rats, and FRGN could permeate the blood-brain barrier to distribute in the brain of rats. Conclusion: The information provided by this research is very useful for gaining knowledge of the pharmacokinetic process and tissue distribution of FRGN.

Background:: Several studies have suggested potential aptitude of polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA)-derived nanoparticles (NPs) to improve the antitumor efficacy of anticancer drugs against colon cancer. Further, conjugation of lectins over the surface of the NPs may ameliorate interaction and thus enhance attachment of NPs with receptors. Objective:: The main goal of the study was to prepare and evaluate targeting potential (in vivo) of the optimized NPs against colorectal cancer. Methods:: The 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) loaded and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA)-conjugated PLGA-NPs (WFUNPs) were prepared and then they were evaluated in vivo for targeting aptitude of formulation using gamma scintigraphy after oral delivery. The WGA-conjugated and non-conjugated optimized NPs were compared for any significant results. Further, optimized formulations were also assessed for different parameters such as radiolabeling efficiency, sodium pertechnetate uptake, stability of NPs, and organ distribution study. Results:: Findings suggested prolonged retention of 99mTc-tagged WFUNPs in the colonic region after 24 h study. Eventually, the outcome from conjugated formulation revealed enhanced bioavailability of the drug in blood plasma for up to 24 h. Conclusion:: In conclusion, WGA-conjugation to NPs could improve the performance of the PLGA-NPs in the treatment of colorectal cancer.

Through an urban tunnel-driving experiment, this paper studies the changing trend of drivers’ visual characteristics in tunnels. A Tobii Pro Glasses 2 wearable eye tracker was used to measure pupil diameter, scanning time, and fixation point distribution of the driver during driving. A two-step clustering algorithm and the data-fitting method were used to analyze the experimental data. The results show that the univariate clustering analysis of the pupil diameter change rate of drivers has poor discrimination because the pupil diameter change rate of drivers in the process of “dark adaptation” is larger, while the pupil diameter change rate of drivers in the process of “bright adaptation” is relatively smooth. The univariate and bivariate clustering results of drivers’ pupil diameters were all placed into three categories, with reasonable distribution and suitable differentiation. The clustering results accurately corresponded to different locations of the tunnel. The clustering method proposed in this paper can identify similar behaviors of drivers at different locations in the transition section at the tunnel entrance, the inner section, and the outer area of the tunnel. Through data-fitting of drivers’ visual characteristic parameters in different tunnels, it was found that a short tunnel, with a length of less than 1 km, has little influence on visual characteristics when the maximum pupil diameter is small, and the percentage of saccades is relatively low. An urban tunnel with a length between 1 and 2 km has a significant influence on visual characteristics. In this range, with the increase in tunnel length, the maximum pupil diameter increases significantly, and the percentage of saccades increases rapidly. When the tunnel length exceeds 2 km, the maximum pupil diameter does not continue to increase. The longer the urban tunnel, the more discrete the distribution of drivers’ gaze points. The research results should provide a scientific basis for the design of urban tunnel traffic safety facilities and traffic organization.

One of the more promising technologies for future renewable fuel production from biomass is hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). Although enormous progress in the context of continuous experiments on demonstration plants has been made in the last years, still many research questions concerning the understanding of the HTL reaction network remain unanswered. In this study, a unique process model of an HTL process chain has been developed in Aspen Plus® for three feedstock, microalgae, sewage sludge and wheat straw. A process chain consisting of HTL, hydrotreatment (HT) and catalytic hydrothermal gasification (cHTG) build the core process steps of the model, which uses 51 model compounds representing the hydrolysis products of the different biochemical groups lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, lignin, extractives and ash for modeling the biomass. Two extensive reaction networks of 272 and 290 reactions for the HTL and HT process step, respectively, lead to the intermediate biocrude (~200 model compounds) and the final upgraded biocrude product (~130 model compounds). The model can reproduce important characteristics, such as yields, elemental analyses, boiling point distribution, product fractions, density and higher heating values of experimental results from continuous experiments as well as literature values. The model can be applied as basis for techno-economic and environmental assessments of HTL fuel production, and may be further developed into a predictive yield modeling tool.
