The effect of three cutting intervals (CI)-4,8, and 12 weeks, and three cutting heights (CH)- 3.8, 7.5, and 15.0 cm, on the yield of Desmodium intortum cv. Greenleaf over a three year period are reported. Total yield and yield of legume increased with increasing CI; the mean legume yields were 4.23, 6.54, and 8.03 tonnes DM ha-1 year-1 for the three CI treatments. Increasing the CH reduced weed yield and total yield at each CI. For yield of legume the CI x CH interaction was significant (P < 0.01 ). At 4-weekly CI a CH of 3.8 cm gave the lowest legume yield whereas at the 12-weekly CI a CH of 3.8 cm gave the highest yield. At the 8-weekly CI the CH treatments had little effect on total legume yield. Weed percentage declined as both CI and CH were increased. However, there was an increase in the grass weed component (mainly Cynodon dactylon) with time. Legume persistence was good for all treatments, but plant numbers increased linearly (P < 0.01) with increase in CH from 7.2 to 9.5 plants m-2. Growth pattern of desmodium was more closely linked to mean temperature than to either evaporation or to rainfall. As a result growth was limited to about seven months of the year and peak growth rate for the 4-weekly cutting regime never exceeded a mean of 6 g m-2 day-1 (60 kg ha-1 day-1).

Testcrosses were made with novel sources of lucerne germplasm. These were evaluated in the field in a subtropical environment to identify the lines which produced the highest yielding hybrids as a guide to future breeding efforts. The novel sources were derivatives of Medicago sativa × M. arborea partial (asymmetric) hybrids (termed sac) and very highly winter-active Omani landraces of M. sativa. As testers, 2 lines were used; a Colletotrichum trifolii race 2 resistant selection from the group 9 Australian-bred and adapted cultivar PacL 901 (selection hereafter termed 901) and the Omani landrace, Oman 2, collected at 17°N latitude, from Salalah, Oman. In the row experiment, substantial and significantly positive tester parent heterosis for overall yield (sum of 13 harvests) was observed in all of the sac × Oman 2 testcrosses, with the mean performance of the 11 testcrosses (1839 g/m row) significantly (P < 0.05) exceeding the mean performance of the sac × 901 testcrosses (1703 g/m row) evaluated. Where 901 was used as the tester, heterosis values relative to the tester for the same sac lines were negative for all testcrosses with 8 of the testcrosses being significantly negative. For the Omani landrace × 901 testcrosses, positive and negative heterosis values for total yield relative to the tester were observed, but none were significantly different from zero. The 901 tester yielded significantly (P < 0.05) more per se than the Oman 2 tester (1956 v. 1470 g/m row), although in an adjacent sward experiment Oman 2 yielded comparably to most of the standard commercial cultivars. The potential of the novel germplasm in the subtropics was verified in sward experiments with synthetics and/or strain crosses with yield increases of up to 42% over the benchmark synthetic Sequel. Further improvements can be expected following selection for disease and pest resistance within the lines and in the case of Oman 2 and sac, converging to maximise complementary gene action.

At Fowlers Gap in far western New South Wales, the exhibition of oestrus prior to 16 months of age was studied in South Australian Merino ewes born at five times of the year in three successive years. Ewes born at different times varied widely in average growth rate and in growth pattern, in response to marked changes in pastoral conditions. For different groups of ewes, considerable variation was observed in the mean liveweight at 450 days of age (34-59 kg), in mean age at puberty (283-more than 480 days), in mean liveweight at puberty (31-49 kg), and in the mean number of oestruses exhibited by 16 months of age (0-8.7). Faster growth rates were associated with both younger ages and higher liveweights at puberty. Puberty occurred at progressively younger mean ages and lower mean liveweights between December and May, suggesting an increase in environmental stimulation during that period. The age at puberty of ewes born in February and April was strongly influenced by season, growth rate being less important. Both season and growth rate influenced the performance of ewes born at other times.

Introduction: Since Longo First described it in 1998, Stapled Hemorrhoidectomy has been emerging as the procedure of choice for symtomatic hemorrhoid. Several studies have shown it to be a safe, effective and relative complication free procedure. The aim of this study was to determine the suitability of (SH) as a day cas procedure at Hue University Hospital. Methods: From Decembre 2009 to April 2012, 384 patients with third- degree and fourth-degree hemorrhoids who underwent Stapled Hemorrhoidectomy were included in this study. Parameters recorded included postoperative complications, analegic requirements, duration of hospital stay and patient satisfaction. Follow-up was performed at 1 month and 3 months post-operative. Results: Of the 384 patients that underwent a Stapled Hemorrhoidectomy 252 (65,7%) were male and 132 (34,3%) were female. The mean age was 47,5 years (range 17-76 years. Duration of hospital stay: The mean day was 2,82 ± 1,15 days (range 1-6 days). There were no perioperative complications. There was one case postoperative complication: hemorrhage; Follow-up after surgery: 286 (74,4%) patients had less anal pain, 78 (20,3%) patients had moderate anal pain, 3 (0,8%) patients had urinary retention; Follow-up after one month: good for 325 (84,6%) patients, average for 59 (15,4%) patients; Follow-up after three months: good for 362 (94,3%) patients, average for 22 (5,7%) patients. Conclusion: Our present study shows that Stapled Hemorrhoidectomy is a safe, reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stay and a faster return to unrestricted daily activity

Objective: To assess the incidence of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) through the example of a large industrial Russian city. Methods: A retrospective analysis of CSC of Kazan population for 2009–2018 has been done. Results: From 2019 to 2018, 831 new cases of CSC were registered in Kazan. A statistically significant upward trend with growth rate 105.2% and accession rate 5.2% was typical for the annual track record. The mean age of patients was 50 years, the minimum age was 14 years, the maximum age was 87 years. A statistically significant upward trend was detected in track record of incidence in groups of 30–39-year-old and 40–49-year-old. Seasonal increase of the incidence was recorded in February, March, April, October, and November. Conclusions: The upward trend and seasonal prevalence are typical for longterm morbidity of CSC in Kazan. The highest morbidity rate of CSC and statistically significant upward trend of its incidence in track record were recorded in the age of 30–39.

Lead iodide was precipitated from aqueous solutions of 0.015 - 0.1 M Pb(NO3)2 and 0.03 - 0.2 M KI in the equimolar ratio using a laboratory model of a stirred continuous crystallizer at 22 °C. After reaching the steady state, the PbI2 crystal size distribution was measured sedimentometrically and the crystallization kinetics was evaluated based on the mean particle size. Both the linear crystal growth rate and the nucleation rate depend on the specific output of the crystallizer. The system crystallization constant either points to a significant effect of secondary nucleation by the mechanism of contact of the crystals with the stirrer blade, or depends on the concentrations of the components added due to the micromixing mechanism.

AbstractThe Baka Pygmies are known for their short stature resulting from a reduced growth rate during infancy. They are peculiar also for their teeth erupt earlier than in any other African population, and their posterior dentition is larger than in non-Pygmy populations. However, the Baka’s dental morphology, like several other aspects of their biology, is still understudied. Here, we explore the variation of the Baka’s deciduous upper and lower second molars (dm2s) in comparison to a geographically heterogeneous human sample by means of 3D geometric morphometrics and analysis of dental traits. Our results show that the different populations largely overlap based on the shape of their dm2s, especially the lower ones. Their distal region and the height of the dentinal crown differ the most, with the Baka showing the most extreme range of variation. Upper and lower dm2s covary to a great extent (RV = 0.82). The Baka’s and South Americans’ dm2s were confirmed among the largest in our sample. Despite the Baka’s unique growth pattern, long-lasting isolation, and extreme dental variation, it is not possible to distinguish them from other populations based on their dm2s’ morphology only.

The Standard Progressive Matrices test was standardized in Estonia on a representative sample of 4874 schoolchildren aged from 7 to 19 years. When the IQ of Estonian children was expressed in relation to British and Icelandic norms, both demonstrated a similar sigmoid relationship. The youngest Estonian group scored higher than the British and Icelandic norms: after first grade, the score fell below 100 and remained lower until age 12, and after that age it increased above the mean level of these two comparison countries. The difference between the junior school children and the secondary school children may be due to schooling, sampling error or different trajectories of intellectual maturation in different populations. Systematic differences in the growth pattern suggest that the development of intellectual capacities proceeds at different rates and the maturation process can take longer in some populations than in others.

Computer generated graphs are presented for the mean temperature difference in typical air cooler configurations, covering the combinations of numbers of passes and rows per pass of industrial interest. Two sets of independent variables are included in the graphs: the conventional one (heat capacity water ratio and cold fluid effectiveness), and the one required in an optimization technique of widespread use (hot fluid effectiveness and the number of heat transfer units). Flow arrangements with side-by-side and over-and-under passes, frequently found in actual practice, are discussed through examples.
