The Australian/New Zealand Standard for safety in microbiological laboratories and containment facilities, AS/NZS 2243.3:20021, is currently undergoing revision. This update reflects requirements for the safe handling of microorganisms in all four containment levels of laboratories and containment facilities (PC1-4); it also covers the requirements for animal, plant and invertebrate containment facilities. The committee has endeavoured to ensure harmonisation with publications by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) and Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) to facilitate implementation by laboratory managers and scientists.

Overhaul merupakan perbaikan mesin atau alat secara total yang dilakukan oleh perusahaan supaya kinerja mesin atau alat bekerja dengan baik. Perusahaan membutuhkan tenaga kerja yang banyak dengan waktu yang telah di tentukan serta tekanan kerja yang tinggi berisiko terjadinya kecelakaan kerja pada saat overhaul. Pengurangan terjadinya kecelakaan kerja maka dibutuhkan penelitian tentang Identifikasi bahaya dan risiko keselamatan kerja pada saat overhaul di area kiln PT X. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengidentifikasi bahaya dan risiko keselamtaan kerja pada saat overhaul di area kiln PT X. Studi ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan metode triangulasi dan semi kuantitatif berdasarkan Australian Standard/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS) 4360:2004. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan 91 bahayadan 126 risiko yang teridentifikasi dan sebagian besar dari kegiatan di area kiln adalah pemasangan scaffolding, pengelasan dan bongkar pasang alat yang rusak. Perusahaan ini perlu melakukan training Keselamatan dan Kesehatan Kerja (K3) kepada pekerja serta menumbuhkan budaya peduli antara pekerja agar tindakan unsafe action tidak terjadi.

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian analisis. Tahapan penelitian di mulai dengan tim peneliti melakukan observasi menggunakan metode HIRA di laboratorium motor bakar Politeknik Negeri Subang. Data yang didapatkan kemudian di analisis dengan pengukuran yang digunakan dalam Australian Standard/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS). Berdasarkan hasil temuan dan analisis, dapat disimpulkan bahwa (1) ditemukan 9 bahaya (hazard) di laboratorium motor bakar Politeknik Negeri Subang. Dari 9 bahaya tersebut terdiri dari 1 bahaya dalam kategori 3H (high) yaitu penempatan posisi motor terlalu berdekatan dan tidak menggunakan APD; 2 bahaya dalam kategori 2M (medium), dan 6 bahaya masuk kategori L (low). Tidak ada yang masuk dalam kategori bahaya ekstrem; (2) Rekomendasi tindakan yang bisa dilakukan untuk mengurangi bahaya di laboratorium motor bakar Politeknik Negeri Subang yaitu pembuatan SOP laboratorium, penataan kembali tata ruang dan peralatan, serta pemberian instruksi sebelum dan sesudah mahasiswa praktikum.

A series of ductile moment resisting reinforced concrete frames are sized to meet the minimum seismic provisions of the New Zealand Loadings Standard, NZS 4203-1992, the Draft NZ/Australian Loadings Standard, the Uniform Building Code, UBC-1997, the International Building code, IBC 2000 (1998 draft) and Eurocode 8 (1998 draft). The results of the analyses allow valid comparisons to be made between the different codes. It is shown that comparisons of individual clauses can be misleading due to the many interactions that occur between clauses. Comparative analyses were made for the buildings described above located in both high and low seismic regions. It is shown that the strength and stiffness requirements for both the New Zealand Loadings Standard and the Draft Standard are low compared with the other codes of practice in the high seismic zone. It is recommended that the required design strengths in the Draft NZ/Australian Standard be increased.

This study aims at hazard identification and risk assessment in an effort to prevent work accident at the Subang State Polytechnic’s Combustion Engine Laboratory. This research is a qualitative-descriptive study with an observation stage using the hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) methods. Data were analyzed using Australian Standard/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS) measurements. Conclusions from the results are: (1) occupational health and safety have not been implemented optimally in the Combustion Engine Laboratory; (2) 9 hazards were found in the laboratory consisted of 1 hazard in the H (high) category, 2 hazards in the M (moderate) category, and 6 hazards in the L (low) category, but none were in the extremely danger category; (3) recommended actions to be taken to reduce the danger in the laboratory are defining laboratory standard operating procedure, rearrangement of laboratory layout and equipment, and briefing students with clear instructions before and after practical work.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi bahaya dan menilai risiko, harapannya dapat mencegah terjadinya kecelakaan kerja di Laboratorium Motor Bakar Politeknik Negeri Subang. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan tahap observasi menggunakan metode hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA). Data selanjutnya dianalisis menggunakan pengukuran yang digunakan dalam Australian Standard/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS). Hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa: (1) penerapan kesehatan dan keselamatan kerja (K3) di Laboratorium Motor Bakar belum optimal; (2) ditemukan 9 bahaya (hazard) di Laboratorium Motor Bakar yang terdiri dari 1 bahaya dalam kategori H (high), 2 bahaya dalam kategori M (moderate), dan 6 bahaya dalam kategori L (low) namun tidak ada yang masuk dalam kategori bahaya ekstrem; (3) rekomendasi tindakan yang dapat dilakukan untuk mengurangi bahaya di Laboratorium Motor Bakar yaitu pembuatan SOP laboratorium, penataan kembali tata ruang dan peralatan, serta pemberian instruksi sebelum dan sesudah praktikum kepada mahasiswa.

Our collaboration involves groups in Denmark, the U.S.A. Spain and of course New Zealand. Combining ground-based and satellite (IUEandHST) observations we aim to determine accurate and precise stellar fundamental parameters for the components of Magellanic Cloud Eclipsing Binaries as well as the distances to these systems and hence the parent galaxies themselves. This poster presents our latest progress.

The Type I simple cold block device was described by Bullivant and Ames in 1966 and represented the product of the first successful effort to simplify the equipment required to do sophisticated freeze-cleave techniques. Bullivant, Weinstein and Someda described the Type II device which is a modification of the Type I device and was developed as a collaborative effort at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The modifications reduced specimen contamination and provided controlled specimen warming for heat-etching of fracture faces. We have now tested the Mass. General Hospital version of the Type II device (called the “Type II-MGH device”) on a wide variety of biological specimens and have established temperature and pressure curves for routine heat-etching with the device.

This cytochemical study was designed to investigate early metabolic changes in the aortic wall that might lead to or accompany development of atherosclerotic plaques in rabbits. The hypothesis that the primary cellular alteration leading to plaque formation might be due to changes in either carbohydrate or lipid metabolism led to histochemical studies that showed elevation of G-6-Pase in atherosclerotic plaques of rabbit aorta. This observation initiated the present investigation to determine how early in plaque formation and in which cells this change could be observed.Male New Zealand white rabbits of approximately 2000 kg consumed normal diets or diets containing 0.25 or 1.0 gm of cholesterol per day for 10, 50 and 90 days. Aortas were injected jin situ with glutaraldehyde fixative and dissected out. The plaques were identified, isolated, minced and fixed for not more than 10 minutes. Incubation and postfixation proceeded as described by Leskes and co-workers.
