The Leeuwin Current, which brings warm, nutrient-poor waters southward along the edge of the West Australian continental shelf, is positively correlated with western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus) puerulus settlement along the coast. Westerly winds, also positively correlated with puerulus settlement, probably assist the transport of larvae to the coast during settlement. We examined relationships between (a) monthly sea-surface temperature where phyllosoma larvae occur – and annual levels of puerulus settlement at locations throughout the fishery and (b) monthly variation in Leeuwin Current strength (and westerly winds) and annual puerulus settlement later in the year (August–January). The Leeuwin Current, when it begins to strengthen during February–April, was highly correlated with puerulus settlement; sea-surface temperature during this period may have strongly influenced puerulus settlement at many locations. Its influence on puerulus settlement may have been due to improved larval survival and growth caused by higher water temperatures associated with a stronger Leeuwin Current in April or to increased retention of larvae close to the coast. In years when the southward-flowing Leeuwin Current was very strong, settlement in the southern locations was relatively higher than that farther north. In years of strong puerulus settlement, settlement also occurred earlier in the season.

Shipboard measurements from late 2006 made by the Danish Galathea 3 Expedition and satellite sea surface temperature images revealed a chain of cool and warm ‘mushroom’ dipole vortices that mixed warm, salty, oxygen-poor waters on and near the continental shelf of the Great Australian Bight (GAB) with cooler, fresher, oxygen-rich waters offshore. The alternating ‘jets’ flowing into the mushrooms were directed mainly northwards and southwards and differed in temperature by only 1.5°C; however, the salinity difference was as much as 0.5, and therefore quite large. The GAB waters were slightly denser than the cooler offshore waters. The field of dipoles evolved and distorted, but appeared to drift westwards at 5km day–1 over two weeks, and one new mushroom carried GAB water southwards at 7km day–1. Other features encountered between Cape Leeuwin and Tasmania included the Leeuwin Current, the South Australian Current, the Flinders Current and the waters of Bass Strait.

The response of the climate system to astronomical parameters is an important scientific issue, but the internal processes and feedbacks need to be better understood. This study investigates the differences of the climate response to the astronomical forcing between the Northern (NH) and Southern (SH) hemispheres based on a more than 90,000-year long transient simulation using the model LOVECLIM. Our results show that the response of sea ice and sea surface temperature (SST) to precession and obliquity are different between the two hemispheres. Precession plays a dominant role on the NH sea ice. This is mainly due to its response to the local summer insolation and also, to a less degree, the influence of the northward oceanic heat transports. However, obliquity plays a dominant role on the SH sea ice through its influence on insolation and the westerly winds. As far as the SST is concerned, it shows a strong precession signal at low latitudes in both hemispheres. For the SST in the mid and high latitudes, obliquity plays a dominant role in the SH whereas precession is more important in the NH. This is largely due to the different response to insolation and feedbacks related to the different land-ocean distribution in the two hemispheres. Near the Equator, besides the precessional signal, the SST also shows strong half-precessional signal, which can be explained by the unique characteristics of the insolation variations at the Equator.

AbstractHere we provide three new Holocene (11–0 cal ka BP) alkenone-derived sea surface temperature (SST) records from the southernmost Chilean fjord region (50–53°S). SST estimates may be biased towards summer temperature in this region, as revealed by a large set of surface sediments. The Holocene records show consistently warmer than present-day SSTs except for the past ~ 0.6 cal ka BP. However, they do not exhibit an early Holocene temperature optimum as registered further north off Chile and in Antarctica. This may have resulted from a combination of factors including decreased inflow of warmer open marine waters due to lower sea-level stands, enhanced advection of colder and fresher inner fjord waters, and stronger westerly winds. During the mid-Holocene, pronounced short-term variations of up to 2.5°C and a cooling centered at ~ 5 cal ka BP, which coincides with the first Neoglacial glacier advance in the Southern Andes, are recorded. The latest Holocene is characterized by two pronounced cold events centered at ~ 0.6 and 0.25 cal ka BP, i.e., during the Little Ice Age. These cold events have lower amplitudes in the offshore records, suggesting an amplification of the SST signal in the inner fjords.

Satellite sea-surface temperature (SST) is widely used for biological modelling and ecological studies, assuming it represents subsurface in situ temperature (IST). We tested this assumption at 32 coastal sites in southern Australia, spanning a wide geographic range. Annual IST regimes are described and were demonstrated to be highly correlated with SST. Mean annual daily temperature differences between SST and IST (DTD) were generally small, varying spatially and seasonally (range 0–1°C). No correlation between DTDs and a range of site attributes was found, indicating the importance of site-specific factors. Seasonal DTDs were not geographically consistent, being higher in South Australia during the summer (mean 1.4°C) than in Tasmania (mean 0.5°C). Generally, small annual mean DTDs justify using SST for broad-scale ecological and climate-change studies, although considerable DTDs at some sites suggest that using SST at smaller spatial and temporal scales is unlikely to be appropriate. In addition, SST data lack information on daily temperature fluctuation that may be biologically relevant. Excepting South Australia, where spatially consistent summer DTDs would allow a correction factor, this site-specific variation is hard to correct. In spite of this, studies that rely on SST should consider the implications of such variation on the level of certainty associated with temperature-based predictions.

Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (SSTA), in four coastal hydrographic stations of Colombian Pacific Ocean, were analyzed. The selected hydrographic stations were: Tumaco (1°48'N-78°45'W), Gorgona island (2°58'N-78°11'W), Solano Bay (6°13'N-77°24'W) and Malpelo island (4°0'N-81°36'W). SSTA time series for 1960-2015 were calculated from monthly Sea Surface Temperature obtained from International Comprehensive Ocean Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS). SSTA time series, Oceanic Nino Index (ONI), Pacific Decadal Oscillation index (PDO), Arctic Oscillation index (AO) and sunspots number (associated to solar activity), were compared. It was found that the SSTA absolute minimum has occurred in Tumaco (-3.93°C) in March 2009, in Gorgona (-3.71°C) in October 2007, in Solano Bay (-4.23°C) in April 2014 and Malpelo (-4.21°C) in December 2005. The SSTA absolute maximum was observed in Tumaco (3.45°C) in January 2002, in Gorgona (5.01°C) in July 1978, in Solano Bay (5.27°C) in March 1998 and Malpelo (3.64°C) in July 2015. A high correlation between SST and ONI in large part of study period, followed by a good correlation with PDO, was identified. The AO and SSTA have showed an inverse relationship in some periods. Solar Cycle has showed to be a modulator of behavior of SSTA in the selected stations. It was determined that extreme values of SST are related to the analyzed large scale oscillations.
