Postfire Regeneration of a Mediterranean Heathland in Southern Spain

Fire is a recurrent disturbance in the vegetation of Mediterranean climate regions. Most of the woody species (16 out of 19) in a Mediterranean heathland community, in the Strait of Gibraltar region of southern Spain, sprouted from subterranean vegetative organs after a wild-fire. Dominant sprouters were the prostrated oak Quercus lusitanica, three gorses, Genista tridens, G. tridentata and Stauracanthus boivinii, and a heath, Erica scoparia. About 100 seedlings m-2 of 14 woody species were censused in the first three years after fire. The highest density of seedlings was recorded for heather (Calluna vulgaris), a rockrose (Cistus populifolius subsp. major) and a gorse (Genista triacanthos). Woody vegetation covered up to 85% of the soil surface in the third year after fire. At this stager the community was co-dominated by the sprouters Quercus lusitanica (21%), Genista tridentata (21%) and Stauracanthus boivinii (20%), and the seeder Cistus populifolius subsp. major (20%). A total of 52 herbaceous species, many of them (35) perennials, was recorded, showing a temporal change in species composition. The role of fire influencing community diversity and the consequences for the conservation of heathlands in the Strait of Gibraltar region, are discussed.

Observations and experiments were performed to examine the relationship between fire and seedling establishment in the following serotinous/woody species: Banksia ericifolia L.f., Banksia serrata L.f., Petrophile pulchella (Schrad.) R. Br. and Isopogon anemonifolius (Salisb.) Knight. For all species a moderate-intensity fire had no effect on the viability of seeds stored in cones compared to seeds stored in unburnt cones. Germinated seeds of all species, placed in meshed and unmeshed enclosures within an unburnt area, were consumed extensively by an unknown predator within 2 months of placement. No such effect occurred in similar treatments within a recently burnt area. Heating of the soil surface and the nature of substrates (litter, ash, bare soil) had variable effects on seedling establishment. Establishment of B. ericifolia and B. serrata was unaffected by the treatments whereas in P. pulchella and I. anemonifolius substrates and heating had significant effects. In P. pulchella establishment was significantly reduced on litter compared with pure ash. In I. Anemonifolius establishment was significantly higher on treatments with litter or mixed ash, except on soils that had received the low heat treatment, where there was no significant substrate effect. It was concluded that fire could create a more favourable soil-surface environment for establishment in P. pulchella only. In the other species, fire would have no effect or, in I. Anemonifolius, establishment might be enhanced in unburnt conditions. This conclusion does not take into account the effects of cover (overstorey and understorey) on establishment. It was concluded that predation of newly germinated seedlings may be the most important restriction on seedling establishment in unburnt populations.

The world is currently going through a disastrous event and a catastrophic upheaval caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The pandemic has resulted in loss of more than 150000 deaths across the globe. Originating from China and spreading across all continents within a short span of time, it has become a matter of international emergency. Different agencies are adopting diverse approaches to stop and spread of this viral disease but still now nothing confirmatory has come up. Due to lack of vaccines and proper therapeutic drugs, the disease is still spreading like wild fire without control. An Old but very promising method- the convalescent plasma therapy could be the key therapy to stop this pandemic. This method has already proven its mettle on several occasions previously and has been found to be effective in curing the pandemics induced by Ebola, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) belongs to the same group of β-Coronavirus that has resulted in the above diseases. Therefore, the role of plasma therapy is being explored for treatment of this disease. In this review, we have mainly focused on the role of convalescent plasma therapy and why its use should be promoted in fight against COVID-19, as it could turn out to be a game changer.

Nanotechnology is a promising tool that has opened the doors of improvement to the quality of human’s lives through its potential in numerous technological aspects. Green chemistry of nanoscale materials (1–100 nm) is as an effective and sustainable strategy to manufacture homogeneous nanoparticles (NPs) with unique properties, thus making the synthesis of green NPs, especially metal nanoparticles (MNPs), the scientist’s core theme. Researchers have tested different organisms to manufacture MNPs and the results of experiments confirmed that plants tend to be the ideal candidate amongst all entities and are suitable to synthesize a wide variety of MNPs. Natural and cultivated Eucalyptus forests are among woody plants used for landscape beautification and as forest products. The present review has been written to reflect the efficacious role of Eucalyptus in the synthesis of MNPs. To better understand this, the route of extracting MNPs from plants, in general, and Eucalyptus, in particular, are discussed. Furthermore, the crucial factors influencing the process of MNP synthesis from Eucalyptus as well as their characterization and recent applications are highlighted. Information gathered in this review is useful to build a basis for new prospective research ideas on how to exploit this woody species in the production of MNPs. Nevertheless, there is a necessity to feed the scientific field with further investigations on wider applications of Eucalyptus-derived MNPs.

AbstractBohn, H.: Revision of the panteli-group of Phyllodromica in Spain and Morocco (Blattaria: Blattellidae: Ectobiinae). Ent. scand. 24: 49-72. Copenhagen, Denmark. April 1993. ISSN 0013-8711. The species of the panteli-group are characterized by lobiform wings in both sexes and very specialized glands on tergite 7 in the males consisting of two pairs of long tubular pouches. The five or six species are distributed in southern Spain (P. panteli (Bolívar), P. coniformis sp. n., P. ignabolivari sp. n.) and northern Morocco (P. Janeri (Bolívar), P. vignai (Failla & Messina), P. sp. B). The distribution pattern suggests a colonization of Morocco from Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar. The characteristics of the panteli-group are reported, the relationship with other groups is discussed, all species are described and depicted, and keys for the identification of males and females are presented.

Reserve, slow-release fertilizers (SRF) enable to simplify the whole system of plant nutrition and fertilisation. Tabletted fertilizers of the Silvamix series represent a prospective product of Czech provenience. At our university, these fertilizers have been tested and used since the year 1991. Ornamental woody species grown in containers were investigated in two stages. Experiments with ornamental plants were established using one-year-old cuttings and seedlings of the following deciduous and evergreen woody species:Cotoneaster dammeri Skogholm,Berberis thunbergii,Potentilla fruticosa Snowflake,Ligustrum vulgare AtrovirensandPicea omorika. After planting into containers, fertilizers in the dose of 1 tablet (i.e. 10 g) per litre of substrate were applied either to roots level or on the soil surface in the container. Silvamix in the dose of 5 g.l-1was used as the tested fertilizer in the second stage. It was applied during the planting in the form of tablets and/or a powder. Control plants were fertilized in the course of growing season using a common agricultural fertilizer Cererit Z. The annual plants increments were measured. These experiments demonstrated a long-term optimum effect of this product on woody species and an equal quality and efficiency of its tabletted and powdered forms.

The coast of southern Spain is one of the main entry points for Africans who want to reach Europe; in this area, there is an important immigrant community of African origin, mostly Muslims. The objective of this study is to describe and understand the hospitalization experience of Muslim migrants in public hospitals in southern Spain, especially their relationship with the nurses who care for them. Data were collected from May 2016 to June 2017. This study followed the principles associated with focused ethnography. During data collection, open interviews with 37 Muslim patients were conducted. Three themes emerged from the inductive data analysis: lack of communication with nurses, discriminatory experiences at the hospital and their experience of Islam in the hospital. We conclude that caring for Muslim patients requires specific training not only for nurses but also for other health professionals; existing communication problems must be addressed by establishing the role of the intercultural mediator as an idiomatic and cultural bridge between patients and nurses. In addition, hiring health professionals with migrant backgrounds would help convert hospitals into spaces for intercultural coexistence.
