The wrinkling of thin elastic objects provides a means of generating regular patterning at small scales in applications ranging from photovoltaics to microfluidic devices. Static wrinkle patterns are known to be governed by an energetic balance between the object’s bending stiffness and an effective substrate stiffness, which may originate from a true substrate stiffness or from tension and curvature along the wrinkles. Here, we investigate dynamic wrinkling induced by the impact of a solid sphere onto an ultrathin polymer sheet floating on water. The vertical deflection of the sheet’s center induced by impact draws material radially inward, resulting in an azimuthal compression that is relieved by the wrinkling of the entire sheet. We show that this wrinkling is truly dynamic, exhibiting features that are qualitatively different to those seen in quasistatic wrinkling experiments. Moreover, we show that the wrinkles coarsen dynamically because of the inhibiting effect of the fluid inertia. This dynamic coarsening can be understood heuristically as the result of a dynamic stiffness, which dominates the static stiffnesses reported thus far, and allows control of wrinkle wavelength.

The impact of heat transfer in micropolar fluid may be developed due to its various promising applications in engineering, bio-medical sciences, geo-thermal progression, spherical storage tanks, nuclear power plants, automobile sectors etc. Motivated by such significance, the current study is to expound the influences of micropolar Casson fluid flow over a solid sphere with Brownian motion, thermophoretic force and buoyancy force surrounded by porous medium. The adopted model having complex PDE’s are reduced to dimensionless ODE’s by utilizing proper similarity solutions. A numerical approach have been carried out for velocity, micro rotation, temperature and concentration, the solutions are procured by Matlab Bvp4c code and plotted graphs for diverse involved parameters. An adequate result is acquired by an assessment with earlier available work. The effects of key parameters on surface drag coefficient, surface thermal flux and particles concentration flux are examined and displayed in tabular form. Grash of number raises the profiles of thermal flux and concentration flux where the buoyancy force is more dominant. Further, the obtained results indicate that the angular velocity is elevated near the surface of the sphere, and they behaves asymptotically far away from the surface due to the effect of micropolar parameter. Moreover, temperature and molar species concentration are enriched with upper values of micropolar factor. It is perceived that, augmented values of Casson parameter amplifies the velocity outline.

Whether serving as mounts, isolators, or dampers, elastomer-based supports are common solutions to inhibit the transmission of waves and vibrations through engineered systems and therefore help to alleviate concerns of radiated noise from structural surfaces. The static and dynamic properties of elastomers govern the operational conditions over which the elastomers and host structures provide effective performance. Passive-adaptive tuning of properties can therefore broaden the useful working range of the material, making the system more robust to varying excitations and loads. While elastomer-based metamaterials are shown to adapt properties by many orders of magnitude according to the collapse of internal void architectures, researchers have not elucidated means to control these instability mechanisms such that they may be leveraged for on-demand tuning of static and dynamic properties. In addition, while magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) exhibit valuable performance-tuning control due to their intrinsic magnetic-elastic coupling, particularly with anisotropic magnetic particle alignment, the extent of their properties adaptation is not substantial when compared to metamaterials. Past studies have not identified means to apply anisotropic MREs in engineered metamaterials to activate the collapse mechanisms for tuning purposes. To address this limited understanding and effect significant performance adaptation in elastomer supports for structural vibration and noise control applications, this research explores a new concept for magnetoelastic metamaterials (MM) that leverage strategic magnetic particle alignment for unprecedented tunability of performance and functionality using non-contact actuation. MM specimens are fabricated using interrelated internal void topologies, with and without anisotropic MRE materials. Experimental characterization of stiffness, hysteretic loss, and dynamic force transmissibility assess the impact of the design variables upon performance metrics. For example, it is discovered that the mechanical properties may undergo significant adaptation, including two orders of magnitude change in mechanical power transmitted through an MM, according to the introduction of a 3 T free space external magnetic field. In addition, the variable collapse of the internal architectures is seen to tune static stiffness from finite to nearly vanishing values, while the dynamic stiffness shows as much as 50% change due to the collapsing architecture topology. Thus, strategically harnessing the internal architecture alongside magnetoelastic coupling is found to introduce a versatile means to tune the properties of the MM to achieve desired system performance across a broad range of working conditions. These results verify the research hypothesis and indicate that, when effectively leveraged, magnetoelastic metamaterials introduce remarkably versatile performance for engineering applications of vibration and noise control.

This study utilizes a dynamic mesh technology to investigate the dynamic performance of aerostatic thrust bearings with orifice restrictor, multiple restrictors, and porous restrictor. An experiment, which investigates the bearing static load capacity, was carried out to verify the calculation accuracy of dynamic mesh technology. Further, the impact of incentive amplitude, incentive frequency, axial eccentricity ratio, and non-flatness on the bearing dynamic performance was also studied. The results show incentive amplitude effect can be ignored at the condition of amplitude less than 5% film thickness, while the relationship between dynamic characteristics and incentive frequency presented a strong nonlinear relationship in the whole frequency range. The change law of dynamic stiffness and damping coefficient for porous restrictor was quite different from orifice restrictor and multiple restrictors. The bearing dynamic performance increased significantly with the growth of axial eccentricity ratio, and the surface non-flatness enhanced dynamic performance of aerostatic thrust bearings.

Many cells in the body experience cyclic mechanical loading, which can impact cellular processes and morphology. In vitro studies often report that cells reorient in response to cyclic stretch of their substrate. To explore cellular mechanisms involved in this reorientation, a computational model was developed by utilizing the previous computational models of the actin-myosin-integrin motor-clutch system developed by others. The computational model predicts that under most conditions, actin bundles align perpendicular to the direction of applied cyclic stretch, but under specific conditions, such as low substrate stiffness, actin bundles align parallel to the direction of stretch. The model also predicts that stretch frequency impacts the rate of reorientation, and that proper myosin function is critical in the reorientation response. These computational predictions are consistent with reports from the literature and new experimental results presented here. The model suggests that the impact of different stretching conditions (stretch type, amplitude, frequency, substrate stiffness, etc.) on the direction of cell alignment can largely be understood by considering their impact on cell-substrate detachment events, specifically whether detachment occurs during stretching or relaxing of the substrate.

The purpose of this paper, for which a finite element bridge model with 7 degrees of freedom per node and the 1/4 vehicle model with six parameters were established, is to analyze the dynamic response of curved girder bridges under vehicular loads. In the numerical simulation, the vibration characteristics of simply-supported curved girder bridge are analyzed, and the effect to the impact factors were also studied for different radiuses of curvature, eccentricities, ratios between bending and torsion stiffness, and vehicle speeds. The simulated results show that not all the first 5 natural frequencies increase with the variation of radius of curvature. The impact factor variations of vertical deflection and torsion angle are not uniform when parameters changed, and the impact factor of torsion angle would be much larger than that of vertical deflection under the same conditions.

Abstract This paper investigates the impact of liquid presence in air on the leakage and rotordynamic coefficients of a long (length-to-diameter ratio L/D = 0.747) teeth-on-stator labyrinth seal. The test fluid is a mixture of air and silicone oil (PSF-5cSt). Tests are carried out at inlet pressure Pi = 62.1 bars, three pressure ratios from 0.21 to 0.46, three speeds from 10 to 20 krpm, and six inlet liquid volume fractions (LVFs) from 0% to 15%. Complex dynamic-stiffness coefficients Hij are measured. The real parts of Hij are too frequency dependent to be fitted by frequency-independent stiffness and virtual-mass coefficients. Therefore, this paper presents frequency-dependent direct stiffness KΩ and cross-coupled stiffness kΩ. The imaginary parts of Hij produce frequency-independent direct damping C. Test results show that, under both pure- and mainly air conditions, the leakage mass flowrate m˙ of the test seal steadily increases as inlet LVF increases. KΩ is negative under all test conditions, and the magnitude of KΩ increases as inlet LVF increases, leading to a larger negative centering force on the associated compressor rotor. Under pure-air conditions, kΩ is a small negative value. Injecting oil into the air increases kΩ slightly and make the magnitude of kΩ closer to zero. Under mainly air conditions, increasing inlet LVF from 2% to 15% has little impact on kΩ. C normally increases as inlet LVF increases. The value of the effective damping Ceff = C − kΩ/Ω near 0.5ω is of significant interest to the system stability since an unstable centrifugal compressor may precess at approximately 0.5ω. Ω denotes the excitation frequency. The oil presence in the air has little impact on the value of Ceff near 0.5ω. Also, the liquid presence does not change the insensitiveness of m˙, KΩ, kΩ, C, and Ceff to change in ω; i.e., under both pure- and mainly air conditions, changes in ω has little impact on m˙, KΩ, kΩ, C, and Ceff.

The spacer grid is a key element of the fuel assembly used in the Pressurized water reactor. Due to its structural complexity, the analysis and the design of the spacer grid structure is difficult. This paper discusses the 5 × 5 cell size partial grid analysis including the detailed grid structural elements, through which, the impact force, the rebound velocity and the time history of acceleration and as well as other mechanical properties of grid under different initial impact velocity were obtained. This paper carried out the dynamic buckling criterion studies, and determined the dynamic buckling load of the 5 × 5 cell size partial spacer grid. Based on assuming the impact process is simple harmonic vibration, the method to determine the dynamic stiffness of the spacer grid was proposed. The experiments were also performed for the comparison with the analytical results. It is found that the analytical results are in good agreement with the experimental results. As a result, we can conclude that the analysis model including detailed grid elements is able to yield accurate analytical results.

Due to the limited control bandwidth of pneumatic artificial muscles, joint stiffness characteristics and their effects on safety and performance of human-friendly robots should be considered in the frequency domain. This paper introduces the concept of effective dynamic stiffness and validates its model with the Stanford Safety Robot. Experimental results show that the dynamic stiffness demonstrates limited effects on the impact acceleration given the same impact velocity and controller gain, whereas it significantly affects control performance of position tracking due to pressure-induced non-linearities. A stiffness optimization strategy for safety and performance is discussed as a design guideline of human-friendly robots.

This paper deals with an analysis of the dynamic behavior of compensated hydrostatic circular step thrust bearings taking into account fluid inertia and recess volume fluid compressibility effects. The Reynolds equation for fluid film and the recess flow continuity equations are linearized using perturbation methods. Results in terms of dimensionless load capacity, oil flow rate, stiffness, and damping are presented for capillary and orifice compensated bearings. Results show a marked influence of fluid inertia and recess volume fluid compressibility on the performance of the bearing.
